Things to do in Beirut, Lebanon: The Best Nature & Parks

January 9, 2022 Rosalyn Ihle

Often called "Paris of the Middle East", Beirut is a thriving hotspot for shopping, socializing and sightseeing, despite many wars and unrest. The city has been rebuilt several times, with modern architecture sharing space with Ottoman and colonial French buildings. Bustling streets such as Hamra and Ashrafieh provide hopping nightlife while the National Museum and the Gibran Museum give visitors a taste of the city's history. The Corniche is the place for activities like jogging and biking.

People gather along the Corniche across from Raouché Rocks to watch the sunset. Spectacular. We were lucky to have a great seat at Bay Rock cafe to watch sun go down. We ordered a 1/2 bottle of Rosé wine and it was 2 for 1 so we got a full one. Perfect.

Garden of Forgiveness Archaeological Area

Discovered after the civil war of 75-90 during the demolition of damaged buildings, this large Z-shaped archaeological area in the heart of Downtown Beirut is still under excavation. The ruins of foundation walls, arches and floors uncovered are thought to date from the Roman and Byzantine periods and to belong to structures surrounding the Agora or marketplace. The area extends from the Corinthian columns of the Cardo Maximus, around St George Maronite Cathedral and all the way to Place des Martyrs.

It is very easy to forget that just outside the park, the city lives, and lives loud. The fountain is mesmerizing, the shade provided by the tree "roof" is a bliss. A perfect place to take a quick break during exploring Beirut. One thing - "quick" break meant 2 hours in my case :)
