Welcome to a capital city whose story goes back at least 3000 years. In Beijing, you'll find a wealth of history, both ancient (the Hall of Preserving Harmony, Summer Palace, Forbidden City) and more recent (Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Tiananmen Square). For the best market experience, choose the Dirt Market over the touristy Silk Market. A visit to the Great Wall, the longest manmade structure in the world, is absolutely essential.

We caught the subway then walked to this site. The bridge was amazing with each lion being different and the ancient ruts from wagons down the middle. There were not many people there and we walked through an area of closed shops and restaurants that appeared to be preparing for bigger crowds. We visited the museum of Chinese resistance to Japanese aggression which had very interesting war relics and news reports about the war. Interesting propaganda if you like history. Enough english signs to keep us informed. We did this on our own in a morning. 2-3 miles walking from the subway station round trip if you don't get lost while walking. My husband had an app on his phone that worked to map our walking routes in China.
