Just north of Frankfurt at the foot of the Taunus Mountains, Bad Homburg has been treasured for its healing baths since the 19th century, when it hosted royalty from across Europe and the world. Of course they also came for its casino, sometimes called "the mother of Monte Carlo." Today, both the original Spa Park (or Kurpark) and the Bad Homburg Casino are still here, and visitors also enjoy Bad Homburg Castle and its White Tower. Just northwest of town is Saalburg, a restored Roman fort.

Reconstructed Roman fort and archaeological museum
Fun and fascinating museum of Roman times on the German frontier. Super reconstruction of the fort. German and English signage. Look beyond the walls to see the limes and look in the woods as you drive from the entrance to see the low ramparts still remaining. Interesting displays with both excavated items and copied items from various German museums. Excellent maintenance and helpful staff. Reenactors in the summer, quite quiet when we arrived on the way north off the plane. Cheap to enter. Fun for an hour to 1.5 hours. Good small store next to the entrance. Free parking. Make it a day out with a visit to the Hessenpark also nearby.
