As home to majestic mountains, opulent palaces, and high culture, Austria's attractions are classically sumptuous and enduring. But beyond the waltzes, the strudels, the alpine summits, and Habsburg architecture, its modern cities are proof of just how easily Austria combines the contemporary with the historic.

We made a boat trip from Gmunden to Traunkirchen and could admire this unique place during hours. The Traunstein is impressive and the (after COVID-lockdown) very quiet lake was highly appreciated.

Go there, see it: very picturesque, with the Loser mountain peak and the Totes Gebirge looming large over the lake. A walk around the lake is a must, as is a swim in high summer to cool off. If you’re coming in August you might be lucky to be there for Berge in Flammen ( mountains in flames), when they light fires around the lake and on the peaks surrounding it, including bengal fires illuminate them. And in the end you’ll be treated to firework over the lake - gorgeous! Be sure not to pay the €15 for tickets to the event if you’re not going to go to the main area with music and food stalls - it’s much better viewing to watch it sitting on the beach somewhere around the lake.

After a lovely drive through the villages of Brand and Innertal and an exhilarating ride on the Lunerseebahn you arrive on the shores of the Lunersee itself. The stunning scenery can be viewed at leisure sat outside the Douglas Hutte or enjoyed whilst travelling the very popular circular route around the lake. At almost 2000 meters high a gentle stroll is what most people prefer but for those of you after a little adventure there is the Schesaplana, the highest peak in the area at 2965 meters, with the popular Totalphutte halfway up. The views are to die for, which ever route you take and you just can't get enough of the fresh mountain air. You can quite easily spend a day here just wandering about.

It's a huge 25 kms long lake with great views of the mountains and one can just walk around or swim in the lake. Views are breathtaking.

We came here for a day trip in the summer and loved it - the location is so beautiful, very scenic. We parked in Pertisau and were lucky to find parking along the lake. From there it was a short walk to the boats - you can take a round trip or a one-way trip for a various length of time - we were here with two small children so opted for a 40-minute round trip around the lake and that was perfect. Once you're on the boat you can order ice-cream and coffees etc - this is quite highly priced as you would expect, but it's part of the experience. Absolutely beautiful location and we can't wait to return and spend more time here.
