Things to do in Austin, Texas (TX): The Best Walking Tours

May 8, 2022 Darleen Reid

Every year thousands of hipsters, groupies, and die-hard fans flock to Austin for the annual South by Southwest festival, which has catapulted the Texas city up the must-visit charts for many travelers. The sandstone Capitol building is symbolic of the Lone Star State’s "bigger is better" mentality, featuring a gorgeous whispering gallery rotunda and 22 acres of grounds. Cool off with a dip in Barton Springs, a huge natural limestone pool that’s fed by underground sources.

My sister and I visited Austin for a long weekend. Being art lovers, we were excited that we happened upon this tour! Eileen was our guide with Micheline as her assistant. There were 8 people in our group. Eileen was a great guide - she was interesting to listen to, kept the tour moving without feeling rushed and was very happy to answer any questions. The art scene in Austin is incredible and without a guide to show you to some of the hidden spots, you are bound to miss some of the best art. This was worth every penny we spent!!

I did the nightly Ghost Walk and it was great! I feel like I learned so much about Austin, and there were a good mixture of stories from both past and present. A big group was supposed to go for my tour, but were unable to make it through no fault of their own, so I was the only one! It was like a private tour! Keely was my tour guide, and she was amazing! Very personable! It was fun exploring Austin and learning about some of its history! I recommend checking it out!

This tour is our longest at 1 hour 45 minutes and covers 2 miles of historic Austin including West 6th street, Guy Town, the Warehouse District and a drink stop at the iconic Driskill Hotel. The pace is leisurely and, in addition to a drink stop at the Driskill, (drinks not included), there are short rests along the journey. After doing a secret food tour in New York and having an amazing experience we booked this one. It did not compare at all. We only visited 4 places that were good but the portions minuscule. The guide did not explain about the area he only showed us 2 buildings along the way. I feel it was way over priced for the little we got.
