Things to do in Atlanta, Georgia (GA): The Best Hiking Trails

March 4, 2022 Tonie Szymanski

Atlanta has been dubbed everything from the "capital of the new South" and "the next international city" to "the best place to do business." It's also a great place to visit. Fueled by the prosperity of local mega companies like Coca Cola and Holiday Inn, the prestige of hosting the 1996 Summer Olympic Games and the energy of young upwardly mobile types who have migrated to the city in droves - Atlanta is on fire. And this time it's a good thing. From world-class restaurants and a myriad of cultural attractions to a hip nightlife and sporting events galore, the city is cosmopolitan in every sense of the word. But Atlanta has also managed to maintain its historic character. Stop by the Atlanta History Center or visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Historical Site, a moving tribute to an American icon. Browse through the former home of famous author Margaret Mitchell or pop into the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum for details on the life and times of the former president and his family. Whether you choose modern urban endeavors or old southern pleasures, Atlanta will not disappoint.

Constitution Lakes

Great little urban park with a mixture of boardwalks, grevel and dirt trails for a couple of mile. Several small lakes along the trail that can be fished in. Trails were amenable to walkers, joggers and bikers. Dolls head trail has a variety of interesting interpretations of the world using a variety of dolls and media to express the artists views. Nice, quite park once you get away from the parking lot and road noise. Most trails were in the shade. Be careful of the poison ivy that is abundant and can be close to if not on some of the trails. Entrance signs along the main road are nonexistent so look atcthe map to find the entrance road.

Whitewater Creek Trail

Reviewed By carolas936 - Marietta, United States

Whitewater Creek Trail is in the East Palisades unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area. It offers a network of trails along the river bank, and through a rolling hardwood forest on bluffs towering above the river. You can spend an hour or half-day hiking or running more than 4 miles of trails. Highlights include an observation deck perched several hundred feet above the river, a sheer rock face on a tributary of Long Island Creek, and a majestic bamboo forest near the northern end of the unit. Hiking trails vary in size and grades from former wood roads to forest paths, with trail maps at all trail intersections. A popular hike follows the river bank about half a mile, then ascends the bluff another half mile to a small deck with superb views overlooking Devil's Racecourse rapids. All creek crossings have bridges. The second-growth forest of oaks, hickory and pine is surprisingly dense and varied, considering its location in an Atlanta suburb. You might spot woodland birds and native wildflowers. The forest is particularly colorful in the fall, and always refreshing to the spirit. There is a paved parking lot at the trail head with a couple of picnic tables. Alas, no restroom nor water is available. Pets are required to be on leash. Fishing is permitted on the river, with an appropriate license. The CRNRA Daily Parking fee is $5 (cash only), and is good in all park units for the day. There is no charge for holders of Senior passes or Annual park passes.
