In the sweltering Georgia heat, no place is as cool as Athens. This hip college town is home to the University of Georgia, Pulitzer Prize winning authors and famous rock musicians. Explore the downtown area, where Victorian buildings are filled with an eclectic combination of independent coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques. Named "Live Music Central," Athens' busy music venues are known around the world. Check out The 40 Watt Club, where The B-52s and R.E.M got their start.

I have had UGA season tickets for over 40 years and attended most of the home games in Sanford Stadium during that time and also as a student at UGA. I have watched this stadium improve and expand over many years to the very best in the SEC. It is beautiful, well designed and comfortable even with a full house of 94,000 fans.

The nature center is a facility of the Athens-Clarke County Department of Leisure Services and partners with Sandy Creek Nature Center Inc., a non-profit support group. This 225- acre wildlife sanctuary includes over 4 miles of nature trails, providing access to a variety of habitats typical of the Georgia piedmont: river floodplains, wetlands, upland pine and hardwood forests, fields, ponds, and streams. In 2012, Sandy Creek Nature Center completed a major expansion funded by SPLOST and community partnership dollars. Over 4,000 square feet were added to the Education & Visitor Center, including new exhibits and a planetarium. Sandy Creek Nature Center is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Property and trails are open sunrise to sunset daily.
The hiking paths are well-marked. We enjoyed getting to hike to the old log cabin & pond. My kids loved getting to see a variety of birds & insects. We were sad the visitor's center is still requiring masks, so we didn't go inside there.

Not long ago Athens was the center of the Rock world. REM, B-52s, Widespread Panic all started here. Today, there are still some good music acts and clubs, along with a vibrant string of bars and restaurants in downtown. Here, nothing good happens before midnight--but it happens.

Grandson is incoming freshman. Little concerned about his adapting as he was coming from military family serving in Germany and grandmother and I are up in Ohio Luckily he has a great support system in place here with about half dozen high school buddies also as freshmen. Campus is beautiful and very easy to get around. While he does have a car here, we will be getting him a bike as the campus offers much in bike access. Lots of dining options as well.

We are South Carolina fans who came up to watch the Lady Gamecocks play basketball and we were very impressed with this facility. We were here maybe 20 years ago and it is much nicer now! The staff there were all very friendly, the place is clean. the seats are comfortable and there is a lot of information on Georgia sports for fans to check out. We ate shortly before arriving so I cannot speak to the quality of the food but I do like the way it is presented -- it's cafeteria style where the food is ready and waiting and you go through the line, make your selection and pay the cashier. This is the only sporting facility that I have been in that does this and it greatly speeds up the process. They also sell a large fountain drink that includes refills and that process is also better than most places where you must get back in line and wait to get a refill. At Stegeman, each concession stand has a dedicated location just for refilling your drink. This is a beautiful facility and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. I have one tip if you are attending an event with general seating -- to make them fit, the seats are different sizes. If you are in a tight one, try moving a seat or two to the left or right and you will likely find a larger one.

This gun was designed during the Civil War and is the only double barrel cannon of its kind.
Near downtown Athens one can find on the grounds of City Hall one of the oddest artifacts of War Between the States ordinance history: the double-barreled cannon. Intended as a major innovation in military armaments, the cannon proved useless in field operations and so was relegated to serving as a eccentric ornament. The cannon is a wonder to behold, and a nearby plaque includes lots of interesting information. A fun and quick stop for those interested in unusual history!

We were traveling home on Greensboro Highway when we saw this statue. It is an awesome work of art that is a must see. However, when you visit, show respect and please do not write Graffiti on the statue (which some people have done).
