August 20, 2021 Karren Gelb

Once known for smog, traffic and tacky architecture, Athens is a city reformed thanks to fortunes brought by the 2004 Summer Olympics. Spotless parks and streets, an ultra-modern subway, new freeways, an accessible airport and all signs in perfect English make the city easily negotiable. Meriting more than a stopover en route to the islands, sophisticated Athens sites include many pillars of Western history, from the Acropolis to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as treasures in the National Archaeological Museum.

We spent 5 days sailing in Greece and had a full day in Athens to fill at the end - Konstantinos came highly recommended so we hired him for the day to take us around all the main sights in Athens before driving us to the airport. He was excellent - knowledgable, charming, and good value for money. We would highly recommend using him for a tour...:)

We played this outdoor escape game and got thrilled! We easily downloaded the app from the website and started walking through the city, solving puzzles and learning many things about the city's history. This is an amazing idea, because it combines the puzzle solving with walking. You can rent a bike and do it faster. We stopped to have a coffee and food and continued from the point we stopped. This is the best thing we did while in the city, I highly recommend it for couples and families. Kids will love it, even if some puzzles are for older people.

Ian Blake, an Archaeology Professor has gone missing during his research trip in Athens. Can you help us locate him? Treasure Hunting is an alternative, engaging and fun way of exploring classical destinations, combining the thrill of the game along with unique sight-seeing of the area, offering far more than a conventional walking tour. In the greater area around the sacred hill of the Acropolis, we will visit some of the most important historic and mythical "gems” and will reveal their stories through interactive and on-the-spot challenges. No entrance fee is required, the places that we will visit are all free to walk to. The duration (usually 3+ hours) depends on your pace and is adjustable to your plans. This walking game is technology-assisted and will require imagination, creativity and a keen eye for riddles & puzzles to complete. Are you up for the adventure?

Inclusions: Full gaming equipment , Travel bag full of mystery items, Prof. Ian's ipad complete with internet connection, Other unexpected (!) findings

The Acropolis Treasure Hunt is a wonderful 3 hour experience, during which my teenage son and I walked c3.5km around the major sites surrounding the Acropolis, worked together to solve a series of entertaining and varying puzzles to progress to the next step, and learned much more than we expected along the way. It was a phenomenal way to spend half a day in Athens. Charis was our wonderful host. She has invented this game and the puzzles within it, and has rendered it most professionally. Armed with the backpack of a missing Professor, and with the goal of locating him, we used a series of clues on a computer tablet, together with various items and artefacts within the backpack, to solve each puzzle and receive the location of the next puzzle. As we strolled to the next site, Charis was a fount of knowledge about the area and its incredible history, and worked out what interested us. Her knowledge is formidable; her passion to share what she knows of Ancient Greece burns bright; and her empathy made it feel like a tailored and unique experience for us. If escape rooms and puzzles interest you and you are looking for an unexpected and different way to learn the difference between your Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns, or how Spartans encoded messages, or why there were 6 obols to a drachma (does that constitute a spoiler?), as well as to see this place and learn of its extraordinary history, its gods, leaders, philosophers and artists, then Charis and her Acropolis Treasure Hunt might be for you. Pictured are my son and Charis, our great host for the experience. Note you do NOT go onto the Acropolis itself, but by the time you do, you will know a huge amount about it!
