Asmara (Tigrinya: ኣስመራ) known locally as Asmera (meaning "They [feminine plural] made them unite" in Tigrinya), is the capital city and largest settlement in Eritrea. Home to a population of just over 800,000 inhabitants, it sits at an elevation of 2,325 metres (7,628 ft), the sixth highest capital in the world by altitude. The city is located at the tip of an escarpment that is both the northwestern edge of the Eritrean highlands and the Great Rift Valley in neighbouring Ethiopia. In 2017, the city was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visit Asmara, the city called as “Piccola Roma” (Little Rome) and observe its most shining collection of Art Deco (A style of design, marked by stylized forms and geometric designs, which was popular in the 1920s and 1930s) architectural wonders portrayed in many of its buildings. Visitors would visit the Italian and Common Wealth war cemeteries. Keren is well known for the fiercest battles that went on between the Common wealth and the Italian forces in 1941. The fall of Keren in the hands of the Common Wealth advancing army signaled the end of Italian occupation in Eritrea.

I arranged a seven day private tour through Adulis travel in November 2019. They were responsive and offered a good itinerary with feedback about several options. I was provided with a driver, guide and a 4WD. Robel and Berhe were friendly, punctual, reliable and well-informed. They changed my itinerary to accommodate any whims that I had and ensured that key objectives were met. I thoroughly recommend the company.

With three extra days in Namibia, I decided to include a quick trip to Etosha. I struggled to find a company that was still operational, and met my needs. Then I chatted with Megan, representative with Across Africa. I quickly knew she was actually interested in helping. Her sincerity, honesty, humanity and dedication were recognized immediately, and I knew that I didn’t need to search further. She set up my trip with no hidden BS, made an effort to meet all my needs, and did all of it promptly, professionally, and graciously. My trip turned out perfectly down to the last detail. I credit Megan and my guide Steve for making my quick visit to Etosha unforgettable. Because of them I will use Across Africa in the future and suggest to others that they do the same!

This country holds a very authentic tradition where all the manners of their past still exist now. The towns are still in their old colonial, if you like, mode. Nothing has changed except a few up and coming premises. Good food and interesting way of sharing a meal. Their religion is very dear to them as well as the law of the land which each one is expected to respect. It is indeed a world of their own. Tip: Not convenient for party goers neither is it good for adventurous people. Good for a nice chilled out vacation.
