Oxley Wild Rivers National Park

we did the 4km wollomombi falls walk with our children aged 6&9. It was a great walk with many places to stop and play along the way, including a bridge to cross the gorge and rocks for our kids to climb on. The water levels were very low when we visited, i'd love to see it after heavy rain! Lots of birdlife to be heard!

I have lived in Armidale for 7 years and only visited this place last year. It is SO beautiful. A short drive outside of the town centre, it's a very pretty place to go for a walk, picnic or swim :)

Dangars Falls

Reviewed By kerry1465 - Wyong, Australia

You don’t realise quite how high you are above sea level until you found to a location like Dangars Falls. The falls are located on the edge of a small section of national park and it’s well worth the trip out here for the views. We went on a couple of short walks - One to the falls viewing platform - not even 10minutes if you don’t stop to look at the views - but you’re going to stop because the views of the gorge and looking across to the falls are amazing - you don’t realise just how high you are up. The other walk was a 10-15minutes walk to the head of the falls - once again there a more stunning views. There are longer walks but we were on limited time. There are plenty of picnic areas - not sure about toilets but I’m guessing there are. A nice, brief, stop on the way here is at the Dangarsleigh War Memorial - you may find a sleeping possum in the information area like we did. It is located about a 3/4 hours drive from Armidale - some of the road is a private, unsealed road that is open to the public because it accesses a national park - there are a number of cattle crossings you have to go over and it’s a bit corrugated in some areas.

Dumaresq Dam

Built between 1896 and 1898 the dam provided Armidale's water until the 1968, when Malpas Dam was completed. Now a stunningly beautiful place to spend a few hours - bring a boat and have a paddle, throw in a line or just take a walk around the perimeter - an easy-going stroll that takes 20 minutes or so. Lots of bird-life and wildlife to see (watch out for snakes) or just sit on the grassy edges, use the barbecues and sheltered eating area, or kick a ball on the large grassed open area. It really is a beautiful part of the countryside outside the main town and a lovely scenic drive to get there. Well worth going.

Armidale Bicentennial Arboretum

Often we go for a stroll around the arboretum - space to kick a ball, barbeques, amenities, nice trees and plants, kids' playground and best of all the pond. This feature even has a waterfall which you can turn on - and it does send a nice amount of water down three levels into the main pond which has a bridge crossing it (where the waterfall switch is located). A nice place to stop and unwind.
