Almaty /ˈælməti/ (Kazakh: Алматы, Almaty [ɑlmɑˈtə]; Russian: Алматы), formerly known as Alma-Ata /ˌælmə.əˈtɑː/ (Russian: Алма-Ата) and Verny (Russian: Верный Vernyy), is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of 1,797,431 people, about 8% of the country's total population. It served as capital of the Kazakh state in its various forms from 1929 to 1997, under the influence of the then Soviet Union and its appointees. Alma-Ata was the host city for a 1978 international conference on Primary Health Care where the Alma Ata Declaration was adopted, marking a paradigm shift in global public health. In 1997, the government relocated the capital to Astana in the north of the country, which is about 12 hours away by train.

On our first visit we felt a little lost about where to go within the huge complex. However, the friendly staff soon got us pointed in the right direction. A great experience: plenty of bathing and steaming options, and the massages were outstanding. Our second visit was even more enjoyable! Be aware that this is a nude experience (sexes are totally segregated) however, you do rent towels and slippers so you can control the extent of your exposure. You pay for entry to the baths for 1 hour but if you book extras (massage, treatments etc.) that total more than 5,000 then the time in the baths is for the remainder of the day. You book everything at reception but only pay for the baths - everything is logged onto your wrist band (slippers, towel, treatments) and it is also the access card for your locker. If you book a massage you go upstairs to the Russian bath area and request a time for your massage (ours were always within 45 minutes of our request). You then enjoy the steam, sauna, hammam, pool etc. until the time of any treatment booked. After changing and returned towels, slippers (logged off on your wrist band) you pay for the services as you leave. Highly recommend.
