Things to do in Algarve, Portugal: The Best Hiking Trails

May 7, 2022 Hana Mouser

The Algarve's sunny shores offer perfect escapes for all types, from those seeking the hot nightlife of flashy, energetic Lagos to those desiring secluded stays in rambling Sagres. Portugal's most southerly region offers historical attractions in former Moorish capital Silves and fascinating Tavira, great golf, fabulous beaches from Praia da Luz to Armacao de Pera, thermal springs at Caldas de Monchique, and miles of limestone caves and grottoes, cliffs and bays along its rugged coastline.

Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos

My partner and I decided to make the most of the cloudy weather forecast by following the Seven Hanging Valley trail and were pleasantly surprised by the views and the change in weather. The winds along the coast disguise the suns rays so it’s important to have sun cream, plenty of water and take mini breaks/ snacks. In total it took 4 hours one way (including plenty of stops for photos along the way). We took the main roads back which only took us an hour and a half. Something to bear in mind when setting off on this trail is stopping for food, by the time we got to Praia da Marinha around 14:00 most restaurants were closed and due to reopen at 18:00/18:30. Additional: Carvalho Beach was a quiet secluded spot whereas Benagil Beach was relatively busy offering boat tours around the caves along the coast (starting from 10:00).

Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

I find the Algarve beautiful and this particular section is breathtaking. The trail is right on top of the cliffs and there is unimpeded view of the ocean, skies and some beach resorts. Absolutely breathtaking! Don’t miss out exploring the coves and beaches. Golden rocks and cliffs, turquoise blue waters, sandy beaches ... you might just want to stay forever.

Trilho da Fonte Benemola

Reviewed By 00flowers777

As this nature park has become very popular, it's wise to park the car in the 1st parking lot or even better, further back, close to the small bridge. As the 2nd parking lot is almost always full and initially build for disabled people who can't walk the extra 10 minutes. We saw two accidents with cars trying to fit in the smaller 2nd parking lot. Also good to know that only the hiking track is public, all plots left and right of the path are private and local landowners get very upset if you acces their area.

Paderne Castle

Reviewed By Lesterbeach - Winnipeg, Canada

The castle is now well marked as you cross the narrow bridge before entering Paderne. Turn right and follow the signs, passed the fonte and then through the fields of olive trees until you come to the gravel road heading up the hill. This year the road was quite rough but it will probably be graded soon. There is lots of parking at the top. The castle is not open to visitors often but sometimes there are special events or school tours and the gates ate open. Walk around the castle and enjoy the view. Carob and olive trees surround the parking area and the field is full of wild thyme- great to add in your cooking.
