If you head for the hills in the state you’ll end up in the northern sector where the inspiring mountains and attractions like the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, the Blue & Gray Museum in Decatur and the Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman represent the diversity of experiences available in the area. In the middle of the state you’ll find Birmingham, an urban center with great attractions and museums, and Tuscaloosa, the quintessential college town and home to the University of Alabama. For beach lovers, sandy destinations like Dauphin Island near Mobile, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offer beautiful beaches, superb golf, fantastic seafood restaurants and heaping helpings of Southern hospitality. For those who love to chase the white dimpled ball, Alabama offers one of the best golf values anywhere. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a collection of 468 holes at 11 different sites across the state, features top-notch, championship style courses at affordable rates.

FarmLinks Golf Course

Pursell Farms is proud to announce that FarmLinks Golf Club is Golfweek's #1 all-access golf course in the state: 2011, 2013 & 2014. We truly a golfer's golf course. From the tips, it is as challenging as any layout on Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Trail. The difference is that FarmLinks is highly playable and rewards good shot making. Gently sculpted out of scenic farmland that's been in the Pursell Family for three generations, the course by Hurdzan-Fry Environmental Golf Design features a mix of dramatic elevation changes, pristine fairways and immaculate greens. Here you'll be treated like family and remember what it's like to play for the pure enjoyment of the game.

Kiva Dunes has always earned my vote as Alabama’s top public golf venue, amongst a slew of top contenders. So how could I possibly nominate Kiva for this honor after three - putting 5 times. Easy....the course architect understood the principles of green and pin placement to maximize difficulty for off-line tee balls, yet freeing up the possibilities of birdies for well-placed drives. But you gotta love those swoopingly roller coaster style greens with pins tucked into unreachable little shelves, where balls landing beside pins could finish 30 yards away. And then those 5 holes where elephant burial grounds divide the greens into two unrecognizable sectors, like a front pin on the extra hard 7th, when your shot is at the back. On the card, #7 is listed as the number one handicap hole, but I have news. It isn’t really, since the number one hole is the incredible 9th, the South’s best hole of the century. At less than 400 yards and needing a superior drive, the approach shot requires nerves of steel for a mid-iron over a long pond to a water-hugging green...yeesh and double yeesh. Course conditions are the best in ten years, with fairways in mid-season form and greens at their loathsome best. Oh, Kiva’s practice facilities are superb, but I really have to say it...the scorecard could use a bit of revision, like a massive do-over adding a dash of colour mayhap.

We did a golf trip in October 2020 and played all 3 courses. The Judge course was something very special. It covers an impressive amount of land and shaped holes that constantly surprised us. We want to play it again because it was so wild and different. The conditions were great and the course played very well and true. The Senator was the “links” style and slightly boring...especially compared to the other 2. The legislator was my favorite because it was fun and challenging but not as hard as the Judge. It’s easy to play 36 holes in 1 day because everything is on 1 property and all runs out of the same clubhouse. Food there is great and easy. They have a large breakfast menu to enjoy before golf. You can grab and go or sit down and they had a buffet also. And lunch menu was great to take on the course or sit and eat. Large driving range on grass. All pictures attached are on the Judge course.

Grand National is just one of their excellent sites that feature world class golf, excellent service and wonderful food & beverage. Some sites like this one are paired with excellent hotel accommodations as well. Grand National is a challenging course, be kind to yourself on tee box selection!

Played Azalea Course while staying across the street at The Grand Hotel. Took advantage of the twilight rate which starts at a generously early time, a very fair price for this course. Greens were in fantastic condition, great pace of play, overall great experience. Was researching a fiction novel I’m writing based in a Southern golf community and this was the perfect example.

I was booked to play the Crossings course as a single, but they were unable to pair my up with another group and the tee sheet was full of foursomes ahead of me making for a long round as a single. The starter suggested I go out on the Falls course since there were only a few groups ahead of me and the first tee was open at that time. Everybody wants to play the Crossings because that's where the LPGA Tournament is played and the more prestigious of the two courses but I found out the Falls course is also a premier course. It is in a beautiful setting the fairways were in great shape and the greens were smooth and true. I encountered two groups ahead of me and both let me play through with no waiting. I will play it again if nothing else to experience the 10th hole with the waterfall and river. My hat is off the the started for suggesting the change.

This is my first time playing this golf course, and I had a good experienced. There was a bag boy available upon arrival and quickly assisted me on my golf bag. The staff at the pro shop were kind of confused because I just called and booked my tee time 30 minutes prior, but got it figured out. The starter had briefly explained how the golf course was laid out, and let me played single. The golf course were well maintained, pace of play were moving along right on par, and overall I had a good experienced. Highly recommended...
