Things to do in Al Ain, Emirate of Abu Dhabi: The Best Day Trips from

April 14, 2022 Lean Nau

Al Ain is the Garden city of this Arab nation, an oasis town located next to the Omani town of Buraimi. Al Ain is famous for its lively, bustling Camel Souk, attracting breeders and buyers from all over the UAE, including merchants and shepherds from the Al Rashaidah tribes. Other worthwhile sites are Jebel Hafeet, the second tallest mountain in the UAE; the Al Ain Museum and Fort, built to protect the oasis from the raiders when Sheikh Zayed ruled the Eastern Region; and the Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort. The Al Ain Oasis is the biggest in the region with thousands of date plams.

Story at the edge of the Empty Quarter, of an oasis surrounded by the desert dunes and on the side of Jabal Hafeet. Alain, the green city, features more than 14700 palm trees on a form of oases scattered across the ancient town. Hence, the city has been inhabited since 4000 BC, as shown through agrological sites in some part of town. Moreover, and during your tour, our Emeriti guides will take you to Alain Palace, showing the traditional sheiks residential. Moreover, you will not miss the camels market, as well as jabal Hafeet, to see the panoramic view of the city.

Communication prior to our meeting in the lobby of our hotel was good. Arrangements were clear and Houda was punctual with her brother as our driver. (His driving was cautious and gentle in a very clean and comfortable vehicle.) Houda is very affable and pleasant, talkative and engaging. We arrived a bit too early so we’re given an impromptu tour of Sports City, which pleased us and our teenage children. Once at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, it was clear that Houda and her brother had done this before. They walked ahead and acted as our liaison with all of the Mosque staff, transitioning us quickly and efficiently through security. Houda is knowledgeable about most aspects of the Mosque and was able to answer almost all of our questions completely, always encouraging us and the kids to ask any questions we had. The location itself is breathtaking and I strongly encourage anyone who has an appreciation for art and architecture or who has an interest in learning about different cultures and religious history and backgrounds take this tour. I won’t describe the things we were privileged to see, as a simple internet search will yield plenty of photos, but suffice to say the place is spectacular. The walking tour is mostly indoors in comfortable, air conditioned spaces, but there is a bit of outside time, so if you’re sensitive to heat, go in the morning, take water and sunscreen, or be sure to visit during the more comfortable months of October through March. Though self-guided tours are allowed (we did that last year by ourselves), I highly recommend a guided tour, as staff and security on site are not allowed to answer questions or act as tour guides. It was great during our second visit to have such a pleasant and knowledgeable guide to whom we could speak and direct our questions. I don’t know how many languages she speaks, but Houda’s Arabic-accented English was very easy to understand and she was a delight to be around.

The oasis city of Al Ain has a dramatic setting, overlooked by the craggy mountain range of Jebel Hafeet. It's a pretty and ordered town that is easy to get around and is popular with visiting families for its zoo and many relaxing public parks. Historically, Al Ain has been settled since at least 3000 BC, and the museum here does a good job of tracing that long history. It's this history that has made the Al Ain area the only site in the United Arab Emirates to be inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This is also an excellent destination for tourists interested in the local culture. Top things to do include excursions to the camel market and regular camel racing events. Those with an adventurous streak will enjoy a four-wheel-drive trip up to Jebel Hafeet's summit

Inclusions: Al Jahli Fort, Sheik Zayed Palace Museum, Green Mubazzarah, Al Ain Oasis, Jabel Hafeet, Camel and Livestock Market, Lunch (If 3 or more guests)

It wasn't terrible and it certainly wasnt great. We were picked up at our hotel about twenty minutes late in a Gray Lines minibus. Driver only; guide service was provided by headphones and a canned narrative often a bit out of sync from where we were at the time. Although it was booked as an English tour, we were the only people on the bus who spoke English. The other languages were handled as was English by the multilingual headphones. The driver spoke a very fractured English which was hard to understand and none of the other languages so I frequently had to translate the driver's comment as to where he would meet us and how long we could spend at a given site. The tour itself was comprehensive and covered a reasonable amount of sites with adequate time per site. Lunch was not included and not even water, which was a first for any tour I had been on. However the driver did stop at a supermarket in the morning so people could buy water or soft drinks. I noted that we frequently parked a substantial distance from sites involving long walks while other tour busses seemed to be able to park much closer. The extreme example came when we went to ascend the tallest skyscraper in the world Burj Khalifa. I noted that other tour guides either accompanied their groups to the top or at least arranged to meet them at the base of the elevators after the ascent. Not this group. The driver raced with other members of the group way ahead of us leaving my wife, who uses a cane and myself way behind, concerned we would lose sight of him as he navigated through a complicated and crowded Dubai Mall to reach the elevators to the top. We finally caught up, the driver gave us the tickets and we rode to the top on our own. However he said he would meet us back at the tour van, about 2 km away back thru the geographically complicated largest mall in the world. We asked security guards to direct us back to the right parking lot. The guards all expressed amazement that the guide had not stayed to escort us back as apparently everyone else did. With considerable difficulty we made it back to the van exactly at the appointed time only to find it locked and no driver in sight. Twenty minutes later he showed up with no apology anf the tour continued. At the end of the day, though we were only a few minutes from our hotel, he refused to drop us off there and said we needed to get a taxi to go back to the hotel. Indeed he stated he was being tracked by the tour company on GPS and would be penalized if he returned us to where we started. Otherwise he would take us back to the Dubai Mall, a half hour's drive away. You can probably do better than this tour to see Dubai.
