The Shinkansen service to Akita is welcome, as is the redone station. The service is in some ways not too different from the prior express trains, due to level crossings, which are rare for the Shinkansen and limit the speed at which it's allowed to travel - tracks notwithstanding. It's a single track for part of the way, so it stops at a siding while the oncoming Shonkansen gets past. But it's great to get on one train, settle in, and go all the way to Tokyo without thinking about connecting. At peak tourist time, about half the train from both directions get off at Kakunodate, the old Samurai village!
