Things to do in Accra, Greater Accra: The Best Literary, Art & Music Tours

January 17, 2022 Florencio Paulino

Stretched along the Atlantic Ocean, Ghana's most populous city boasts glittering beaches, monumental buildings, museums, libraries, galleries, traditional markets and lively nightlife. Accra's architecture reflects its colonial history, with 17th century castles standing alongside modern skyscrapers. A veritable melting pot of cultures, the city's central financial and shopping districts contrast sharply with the less affluent residential areas surrounding the urban core.

I so enjoyed the full day with Stellar tours. He knew so much about Ghana history. We went to the bead market, checked out the three palm trees, walked 250 steps down to see the twim boti waterfalls (which we had to walk back up...????I have to get back in the gym????) sat under the umbrella stone for a spell while sipping on some refreshing palm wine (I could have taken a nap). Great experience and I would definitely recommend Stellar tours????

Unless poor communication and inconsideration are your thing when paying for an experience, then Tastemakers Africa is not the company for you. I booked a "December in Ghana" trip with Tastemakers Africa, which was supposed to be filled with various cultural experiences, but the entire trip was completely disorganized and there was a serious lack of communication by trip organizers. Being promised a better experience due to a lesson learned by the CEO of Tastemakers Africa I decided to give the company another chance. To my dismay I was seriously disappointed to learn the poor communication and disorganization was still a major attribute of Tastemakers Africa. Although this company obviously hasn't learned their lesson in conducting good business and customer service (evidenced by repeated poor business behavior/practices), I certainly learned my lesson. Take it from me, the headache that comes with booking with Tastemakers is not worth it.

I went on this tour on my first day in Ghana. I was impressed with the guide. He knew much and answered every question I had. The pace was perfect and as an almost senior traveler, I greatly appreciated the help I got from him, taking pictures or taking my hand to walk down some tricky steps. I recommend this tour.

We visited Kakum forest for the canopy walk. We then proceeded to Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle. Our guide Sam gave us excellent service throughout. The Castles are raw and unvarnished and the experience was profound. Getting to understand the evils of the slave trade and encountering the physical spaces where slaves were shackled was both horrifying and edifying. I feel I have learnt much and it has enhanced my understanding of the roots of racism which afflicts us globally. It gives an opportunity to get to know another part of Ghana away from the ‘bright lights’ of Accra. Well worthwhile.
