Things to do in Abruzzo, Italy: The Best Walking Tours

April 3, 2022 Milan Banda

Abruzzo (pronounced [aˈbruttso]) is a region of Central Italy, with an area of 10,763 square km (4,156 sq mi) and a population of 1.2 million. Its western border lies 80 km (50 mi) east of Rome. The region is divided into the four provinces of L'Aquila, Teramo, Pescara, and Chieti. Abruzzo borders the region of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and south-west, Molise to the south-east, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Geographically, Abruzzo is divided into a mountainous area to the west, which includes the Gran Sasso D'italia, and a coastal area to the east with beaches on the Adriatic sea. Abruzzo is partially considered culturally, linguistically, historically, and economically a region of Southern Italy, although geographically it may also be considered central. The Italian Statistical Authority (ISTAT) deems it to be part of Southern Italy, partially because of Abruzzo's historic association with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

During the guided tour you will learn about the history of the ancient farm and the various cultivation techniques. Inside the cellar you can taste the wines of Podere Castorani accompanied by typical local products. The Podere Castorani rises 350 meters high, on a hill of Alanno where the ancient vineyards, set between the Majella National Park and the nearby Adriatic coast, enjoy excellent exposure to the sun and night winds, and temperature changes between day and night that give the grapes unique and precious characteristics.

We had such a fantastic day with Alessio and his family. We arrived to espresso and local Italian cakes which were lovely. We were introduced to all of his family and they were all so kind and welcoming. We were then able to make a pasta sauce with his wife and then we created pasta from flour and egg - with Alessio and his wife explaining what to do and why every step of the way. We then let the pasta dough rest and Alessio took us on a tour of his farm which was amazing to see. We picked and ate fresh tomatoes and melons which tasted incredible! We then went on a tour of the local village and tried the most fantastic gelato! Upon returning to the farm we rolled and cut our pasta using traditional methods and cooked it before sitting down to a traditional Italian lunch with Alessio's whole family. After lunch we had more coffee and Alessio took us to see some local attractions we had been asking about earlier in the day. Alessio and his family really went above and beyond for us and we were made to feel so incredibly welcome. Alessio and his whole family are so passionate about their farm and their products. He gave us so much information and we really felt like we were experiencing 'the real Italy'. I honestly cannot recommend this day highly enough if you want an authentic experience with a lovely Italian family. We spent a week in Italy - including some days in Rome doing various excursions - but this was by far the best day we had during the whole holiday. Thank you so much and we will definitely return!

I spent a couple of days with a friend in Castel di Tora, a charming small town overwhelming the Turano lake. Our accomodation was a charming house that offered everything we were expecting and more, the right place to stay after a demanding activity, relaxing around a fireplace while tasting good food. And what to say about the lake view from the terrace?…it was really breathtaking! We had a two days trek, an awesome experience in a small group of hikers, with Giampaolo as our guide. He was really supportive and very patient and took care of every detail. Moreover, it was great to have a guide so knowledgeable about local history. The hikes were challenging but really awesome in terms of mountain beauty and wonderful views, so we ended with a great sense of satisfaction. Everything was perfectly organized and communication was great too. I would highly recommend them for anyone looking to hike in this incredibly beautiful part of Italy.

The Church of St. Francis hosts the testimony of the oldest Eucharistic miracle of the Catholic world. Around the year 700 in Basilian monk doubted the presence of Christ in the Eucharist: during the mass the consecrated host and wine became flesh and blood. The two relics, 5 drops of coagulated blood and thin membranes of flesh are preserved in a silver monstrance and a crystal ampule Histological examinations, have shown that it is human blood and heart tissue with the same blood group (AB) The sanctuary is visited every year by thousands of pilgrims from all over the world. The Shrine of Manoppello is recognized as the true Face of Jesus Christ. From 1646 the Holy Face is exposed to the veneration of people. It is a soft veil, the warp and weft are intertwined in the form of a normal weaving and the face of the Shroud of Turin and that of Manoppello both fabrics had been laid on the body of Jesus.

We wished we could see Pope Francis but we could never expected we could see him so closely thanks to Rossana great effort. Rossana and our driver Luigi are both great persons and the visit to the Pope very well organized. They both were professional, supportive, engaging and very helpful. Rossana took really a great effort to make the visit tailored to our needs and she had great sense of humour. Big thanks to R and L. We would highly recommend this tour.

A lovely lady called Gulia took my husband and I on a walk round Rome sampling food and drink from various shops and a superb pasta lunch. If you are going todo this tour I advise you not to eat much beforehand as we finished the tour around 2:00pm and did not eat another thing all day. We had meats and cheese with some wine to start off with and then followed this in a picturesque market square with tasting various oils and vinegars. Roman Pizza and beer were next, followed by a delicious lunch of two different types of pasta. Then followed dessert of either cannoli or tirimisu at another stop off point, ice cream and coffee to finish. Never felt so full. Guila was full of interesting conversation about her city. All in all a great day out ending at the Trevi fountain.
