Things to do in Abruzzo, Italy: The Best Historical & Heritage Tours

November 3, 2021 Renato Branum

Abruzzo (pronounced [aˈbruttso]) is a region of Central Italy, with an area of 10,763 square km (4,156 sq mi) and a population of 1.2 million. Its western border lies 80 km (50 mi) east of Rome. The region is divided into the four provinces of L'Aquila, Teramo, Pescara, and Chieti. Abruzzo borders the region of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and south-west, Molise to the south-east, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Geographically, Abruzzo is divided into a mountainous area to the west, which includes the Gran Sasso D'italia, and a coastal area to the east with beaches on the Adriatic sea. Abruzzo is partially considered culturally, linguistically, historically, and economically a region of Southern Italy, although geographically it may also be considered central. The Italian Statistical Authority (ISTAT) deems it to be part of Southern Italy, partially because of Abruzzo's historic association with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

As a family of three, we were excited to go on the 7 day northern lakes and Dolomites tour - especially as it would be very difficult to visit these areas by ourselves (visiting from Australia and not confident driving/getting around to these areas). The tour started well, we were the only English speakers but we had been assured our guide would provide fluent English commentary. Perhaps we expected too much but there was very little information provided about where we were or where we were travelling through. In fact, the first three days we received very limited information in total while the Spanish speakers were provided with much more. We visited some stunning places but too much of the tour focused on lunch breaks and eating rather than seeing the sights. Halfway through the tour more English speakers joined the group bit we still had to seek information rather than being provided with it on some occasions. The bus was too big for navigating city streets and mountain switchbacks - the driver often had to reverse and try multiple times to get around corners and switchbacks. I felt very sorry for him - he did a marvelous job but it would have been so much easier for him and much more enjoyable for us if we weren't concerned about falling off the side of a mountain. The company can't seem to decide whether they are catering to small groups or large and this has a huge impact on the enjoyment of the tour. In Trento we were advised that we would have several hours and could visit the castle. After paying for admission and entering we were then advised that because it was raining some people didn't want to stay so we were cutting the visit short - this should never happen! We then had to get back on the bus only to stop at a truck stop for lunch (instead of staying in lovely Trento). There wasn't really any point to having the guide as he did not provide much "guiding" only very limited information and directions to places he thought we should go and eat. We would have done as well with just the driver. If you can navigate your way around the northern lakes and Dolomites by yourself then I recommend you do that. Otherwise, perhaps a different company would provide a better tour.

Exciting and unique experience, history, culture, art and food and wine in unique and unforgettable places. The tour is unique because with the comfortable e-bikes we cross the centuries during which Orvieto has become the jewel we know: the Rocca di Albornoz, the visit to the Underground, the Piazza del Duomo with a stop at Cantina Foresi, the visit at the Piazza del Popolo with the beautiful Palazzo del Popolo, the alleys with the artisans 'shops that have handed down an ancient art for generations, the Piazza della Repubblica called Sant' Andrea with the church of the same name, the oldest in Orvieto, where the four different civilizations that are superimposed are clearly visible, the pause on the terrace that looks to the southwest on an extraordinary panorama, the medieval quarter and finally the ring of the ring at the base of the Rupe. With e-bikes it is beautiful, ecological and fun, suitable for everyone, a form of "slow tourism" to live an experience to remember and tell.

Inclusions: Visit to the Underground, Use of bicycle, Stop with wine and food tasting at Cantina Foresi, an ancient wine cellar dug out of the tuff, We supply the masks, gloves and gel, the bikes are sanitized before and after each use

Paulo was an amazing guide! He met us at the Piazza Cahen and we bikes through the hills of Tuscany, Umbria and on to Civita. Paulo was warm and friendly and gave us much information about the history of Orvieto and Civita. We stopped at a monastery, a castle, had a snack in a small town and then to magical Civita. I’m so glad we did this trip with a guide as we learned so much more than just going on our own. The last stop of our trip was at a family owned winery in Orvieto where we got a tour of the wine room and sampled 2 wines, had local meats and cheeses, pork, potatoes and sweets. This was money well spent and the most favorite part of our trip! The Ebikes were easy to use and made our 6 hour trip and many uphill climbs easy!! Must do trip! Thank you, Paulo!!

The e-bike experience in Civita called "Castello nel Cielo" is unique. Just outside Orvieto you pass through the ancient Badia and then go up the plateau which from the ancient Dimora di Collevento through Canale and then Boccetta leads to Bagnoregio, accompanied only by the rustle of a breeze that keeps the air clear here in all seasons , clean and fresh. The images that can be fixed in these places of great beauty, where the panoramas offer views of vineyards, olive trees, pastures and woods are a joy for the eyes. Farmhouses and cellars meet along the path where you can buy the real typical products of the place. Then the arrival at the Civita belvedere is indescribable, a glance that leaves you breathless. The visit to the village, a set of famous films, is a continuous emotion, with its premises, artisan shops, perfumes, essences ... We return by stopping at the Belvedere of the Terrazza Farnese, from where the Orvieto cliff can be admired in all its majesty and elegance

Inclusions: It is offered in a typical tavern in the village of Civita, a basic snack of typical local products, cheeses, cured meats, bruschetta and local wines, Use of bicycle, Entrance ticket to the village of Civita., We supply the masks, gloves and gel, the bikes are sanitized before and after each use

This was our first time on E bikes and we thoroughly enjoyed our morning tour of Orvieto. The bikes were great - easy to use and they whizzed us around the city effortlessly. But it was Elena's tour, which was informative, fun and comprehensive which made it such a memorable experience. We stopped at various viewpoints and places around the city and Elena gave us a wonderful insight into the history of this amazing place, as well as her personal recommendations of restaurants and things to do after the tour. Our tour included a visit to 'Orvieto Underground' which was also very interesting. We really didn't want the tour to end! We will definitely take another tour with Orvieto Bike Tours when we are back in Orvieto. I say 'when' and not 'if'; the bike tour alone is the only reason you need to visit Orvieto!

What a trip! Adam, our driver, was fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble for him. The day went according to plan and we had marvellous visits to both the extensive complex of Villa Adriana and then taken up the hill to Villa d’Este and its magnificent water gardens. Thoroughly recommend this out of Rome trip although pre-trip communication from the local provider could be improved.
