Best known as the birthplace of St. Francis, Italy's patron saint, Assisi lies amid Umbria's rolling hills. Religious pilgrims have come here for centuries to visit the Basilica of San Francesco (where St. Francis is buried) and the Basilica of Santa Chiara (to see the tomb of St. Clare). Visit the Eremo delle Carceri to see caves where medieval hermits withdrew from the world. (You may find such solitude quite appealing—especially if you're here on a daytrip from Rome!)

A very pleasant stay. New rooms, very modern and clean. It’s silent even though it’s right in the center. Restaurants and parking space are all in walking area. The breakfast was a dream! A lot of choice between sweet and savory food and a lot of homemade cakes, breads, fruit juices and marmelades. We will come back soon ❤️

Helios Assisi is located within the delightful palace of the sixteenth century and placed in one of the main streets and most central of the city: Via Bernardo da Quintavalle 20 / a. It offers en suite rooms completely refurbished and tastefully decorated. From a beautiful setting typically medieval, you can reach everything within walking distance. We are very close to the main churches: Basilica of Santa Chiara, Basilica di San Francesco, Cathedral of San Rufino, Chiesa Nuova, Piazza del Comune, the museums and collections of Assisi Roman Forum Art, Municipal Art Gallery, Rock of Assisi, Diocesan Museum , to restaurants and other main streets of Assisi. Around Helios preserves the charm of the story of St. Francis of Assisi and his first follower Bernardo of Quintavalle, whose house, now a destination for scholars and religious, is a few meters away.
We staying at Helios for one night. The interior is very modern and contemporary. We were greeted courteously, even after arriving early and needing to call the host to come and let us in (note for others: make sure you set up an accurate arrival time with the host, as there is no manned reception). Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of options. The room was quiet, facing a back alley. The shutters darkened the room exceptionally well. This was one of the best and quietest sleeps we had on our vacation. The accommodation is a bit difficult to find, up a few sets of stairs, but it's close to the main square in Assisi.

Four of us (two priests and two nuns) stayed at this monastery during a 30-day silent retreat. During one four-day stretch, there was no hot water and nothing was communicated to us until we finally said something on Day 2. During another four-day stretch, they “forgot” to turn the heat on in the rooms despite at least three separate requests to do so. Weather in Assisi in March is often VERY cold. Real coffee was not provided to us with breakfast even though we had pre-paid the rooms and meals for the whole month. Instead, we had access to a machine with orzo (barley coffee substitute) and I was actually told by one of the nuns that, “This is coffee the way Americans like it”. She obviously had no way of knowing that I had worked in the coffee business for six years—in Seattle!— before going to the seminary, and that some Americans can actually distinguish between fake coffee and the real deal. I posed the question, “Would you serve grape juice to your Italian guests and tell them it’s wine?” but something was lost in the translation,—obviously—because they offered us wine for dinner shortly thereafter. We turned it down because it was Lent! When I finally had a meeting with the mother superior, I insisted, among other things, that breakfast include real coffee for the remainder of our stay. We had a pleasant meeting, but after I returned to my room that evening, there still was no heat in the room. (There WAS plenty of heat in the conversation that followed). We did get coffee with breakfast and heat in the rooms after that, but these things shouldn’t have to be fought for. Food was acceptable for the most part, and would probably be OK during a short stay (one or two nights). But after three weeks of the revolving menu, I finally started eating outside the monastery to get some variety and more substantial quantities of protein. I even ate at McDonald’s—twice! #GodHelpMe Finally, there was at least one large group per weekend and all of them were exceedingly loud, rendering the “monastic” environment moot from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. The treatment you receive at the reception desk is hit and miss. Sometimes they can be pleasant. Other times they virtually ignore you. Still other times, they’re downright rude. The one consistent bright spot is a volunteer lay woman named Maria Angela. She was always pleasant, attentive and helpful at the reception desk. There were certainly some bright spots to the visit over the course of the month (e.g. access to the chapel), but sadly, the positives were so far outweighed by the easily avoidable difficulties that I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this guest house, especially for an extended retreat. If you are not inclined to speak up when problems aren’t addressed, you can expect to be doing involuntary penance at some point if you stay more than a couple nights. It goes without saying that Americans must lower their standards and expectations for accommodations when traveling in Europe, and particularly in Italy. But coffee with breakfast, heat in the rooms and hot water are minimum expectations anywhere. Things happen… problems occur… but it’s the way that problems are handled that makes or breaks a hotel/guesthouse. A lack of urgency to address (or even acknowledge) problems is the norm at this one. The Benedictine Order has, as its standard of hospitality, to treat all visitors as if it were Christ himself visiting, which makes the indifferent, inconsistent treatment of guests—including priests and nuns—all the more puzzling and troubling. If Christ were thinking of staying at this guest house, I would suggest he bring a second tunic, carry a sack (of coffee) and look for quieter environs in which to pray on weekends (See Luke 9:3). If you are thinking of staying in this guest house, you may want to keep looking.
