Kiri-no-sato Takahara Lodge is one of the best mountain getaways I have EVER been to. It totally exceeded my expectations in every way. The price is super reasonable, even when considering that my wife and I went during a national holiday time of year. The dinner and breakfast were both 5-star quality and easily worth $90 per person just for that -- the dinner was 9+ courses, including sushi, japanese pickles, chilled sesame tofu, miso soup, fish and chips, sukiyaki, fried tofu with vegetables, roasted wild boar, a pizza cooked in a real wood oven, and fermented peaches. In our room, we had very comfortable beds, a great view across the mountain valley, DIY coffee, air conditioning, and a very calm relaxing atmosphere. Just a short walk down the hall was the onsen which was also very relaxing with a nice mountain view. I really can't think of anything that would make our experience better, because Jian has thought of everything already! He's a very welcoming host and even came to pick us up in his jeep during the pouring rain when we got lost hiking through the woods. I don't visit many places twice, because usually it's "been there, done that!" but I cannot wait to return! It's like a little slice of paradise! Also don't worry about language issues because Jian speaks fluent Japanese, English, and Spanish.

The hotel is very nice and very modern. We were greeted wonderfully by the reception staff and shown straight to our room (805). The room was traditional Japanese and very large. It has a magnificent view over the river, has an ensuite and own shower room and of course the wonderful Japanese electric toilet seats. The only drawback for us was the traditional Japanese bed, which we aren’t used to, so sleep wasn’t great due to the hardness of the bed. There are block out shutters, so look for them otherwise you’ll have an early wakening. We had dinner included in our stay and it was amazing. A set meal and also choices from the Japanese smorgasbord. Absolutely delicious. The hotel also has Japanese baths available, both inside & outside. Once again these are amazing and so relaxing. Breakfast was also well up to standard with a great choice. I would absolutely recommend staying at this hotel.

We stayed here for 3 nights and we absolutely love it, our room was pretty big, opposite is the onsen river where you can just jump in with your swim suit, love the onsen of the ryokan too, they have indoor, outdoor and also the private onsen all for yourself, we find nothing to do in the evening around and we pretty happy just to stay in the ryokan and enjoy the onsen and our ryokan dinner, they have a van to drop you off and pick you up if you want to do a short Kumano Kodo, the pilgrimage trail, from here you can take a bus to Yunomine Onsen and try the oldest onsen 1800 years Tsuboya, don’t forget to buy some eggs to boiled and eat after your onsen time in Yunomine, small onsen town. We were really happy with our choice for staying here, staff doesn’t speak English but still try their best to understand us and we’re very appreciate about it, great place, great service and excellent ryokan dinner, the breakfast is not my taste but still happy ?

Staffs is kindness, despite stay alone. Hot spring is amazing, I had never known such a best spring. Dinner and breakfast are also elaborate and very delicious. Wi-fi may be inadequate, but enough to enjoy nature. It is the number one inn I want to visit again.

We took the latest bus from Shingu to Watarase Onsen, when we arrive, it was so dark, we had to call hotel to pick up us from the bus stop. The hotel has very big outdoor onsen, it was so nice. but the room had no shower and aslo too cold inside. The breakfast was only so so to compare with other Onsen hotel. Anyway, we like the onsen so much!

Ryujin Onsen is one of the three famous beautifying hot springs(Bijin-no-Yu) in Japan. In the Kirari Ryujin, you can enjoy the indoor and the outdoor hot springs with beautiful stone and surrounded by bamboo fence. The restaurant has Japanese authentic cuisine and some western dishes in a buffets style. Our hotel has a Japanese and Western style rooms with a beautiful setting in a valley along the Hidaka River. We are looking forward to seeing you in a near future.
Very enjoyable stay at Kirari Ryujin. The pinewood theme, featuring local art work is inviting. The Onsen is the feature. With indoor and outdoor bath area facing the beautiful landscape, it is total relaxation. The change rooms are very clean and well kept. The massage chairs at the entrance is a good wrap to the onsen. The food buffet is pretty good, although, lacked on selection. This hotel caters mostly for local tourists and see few foreign tourist coming into the area. The staff aren't fully conversant in English but takes all attempt to understand and aim to please the guests. They were friendly, respectful and helpful. This hotel have definitely changed our onsen experience and would love to make a return trip one day.

This is a review of Yamayuri which is the mid-range option among the three onsen hotel in Watarase. While a typical onsen resort, Yamayuri is an affordable choice to enjoy the luxuary of staying at a Japanese onsen hotel. This is not a ryokan, which is mostly a family owned smaller operation. The latter typically offers more intimate services including have your meals at your room. But a roykan stay usually costs more and the the hardware may not be as good as a corporate hotel. That said, you are still going to have a Kaiseki meal if you choose such a plan at Yamayuri, but you will have come down to the dining hall to have your meal. The food is good and tasty but not extraordinary. The service is dedicated but again not at the same level as at a ryokan. Watarase is not a 1st tier onsen location in Japan. The public baths shared by Yamayuri and Himeyuri were not crowded even during the high season I visited. There are four semi open-air bathrooms you can check in and lock for your family. They are again, usually available. This is another nice point about this hotel. Pros: affordable and nice scenary, onsen quality is pretty good. Cons: transportation link, WIFI connections and confusing booking system

Ashitanomori, our most distinctive guesthouse, is located along the Oto River in Kawayu, nationally famous for its unique hot springs. At Ashitanomori, you will enjoy a casual, informal stay in Kawayu in an atmosphere of beautiful and peaceful nature. Here in Kawayu spa, hot mineral waters come up from the riverbed. Right in front of our inn, by the river, you choose a likely spot and dig out a natural “hot tub” along the riverside and wait for it to fill with hot water and your own private outdoor bath. We have all the tools you need to get you started. In summer, you can enjoy both swimming in the river’s cold water and relaxing in open-air hot springs. In winter, a magnificent huge open-air hot spring, called SENNINBURO, is waiting for you. The name is a play on the word for ‘thousand’, a reference to the fact that you could squeeze about 1000 bathers into this open-air tub.
Good basic room, view to the beautiful river. Washroom and toilet both common area. Toilets are so incredibly small even for japan (we are not big). The hot springs were a bit small and without any views, but had its own changing room and the great thing about this is that it can be used as private at no cost for families or couples and are open 24x7 which is great. Very nice ambience in the restaurant, friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was excellent quality, and service was great too. Unfortunately for us, the springs in the river had been washed out due to heavy rains just 2 days before we arrived. We however enjoyed the open air hotspring less than 5 minutes walk, in the company of Japanese and Australian visitors and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Stayed one night as part of our Kumano Kodo trek and it was great. The inn is essentially several houses connected together over the years, and history shows. We were in the “newer” wing, largish room with a great view facing the river. Kaiseki dinner excellent as expected - they happily accommodated our request for vegetarian / pescatarian meals (let them know when booking). Japanese hospitality at it’s finest! Splurge for one night.
