The best available Ranches to stay near New Mexico

April 19, 2023 Sheron Bogner

With its rich cultural heritage from Native American and Spanish settlers, New Mexico has been both a Spanish colony and a Mexican colony, and still retains a strong individual identity within the United States. The landscape is breathtaking, the food incredible, and there is a thriving cultural scene, all of which makes New Mexico, and Santa Fe in particular, a great place all year long.

Geronimo Trail Guest Ranch

Geronimo Trail Guest Ranch is a real western adventure! Horseback riding or hiking takes guests through open meadows, tall ponderosa forests, up on high hills where the views go on forever, and down into deep canyons with sheer cliffs and crystal clear streams. From the "Top of the World" guests can view the 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest, Aldo Leopold and Gila Wildernesses. Elk, mule deer, wild turkey, javelina and other wildlife abound. Pit houses, Cliff Dwellings, and Pictographs (rock art) of the earliest inhabitants, the Mimbres (750-1150 AD) to explore in the immediate vicinity. This is the land Geronimo and the Apaches roamed. Outstanding gentle and responsive horses for every ability. Comfortable, attractive accommodations, warm hospitality, relaxed atmosphere, great food. Come enjoy the peace and quiet at our small ranch!

Outstanding vacation AGAIN at Geronimo!

If you love quiet, comfortable cabins, great food, super people, well taken care of horses and outstanding riding, then you need to go to Geronimo Trail Guest Ranch. This was my fifth visit and I have already booked for opening week in 2023. It is a "slice of heaven" in "the Gila". I have been, and continue to go, to several guest ranches and this one is by far on of my favorites.

Concho Hills Guest Ranch

Voted as “Best Dude or Guest Ranch” and “Best Heritage Guest Ranch” for 2019! Nestled in the foothills of New Mexico's San Mateo Mountains, Concho Hills Guest Ranch offers a true west ranch vacation. Located in one of the Southwest United States' most picturesque and historic areas, there are lots to do both in and out of the saddle. Here you will “ride a horse” instead of “going for a ride on a horse.” This is where the Wild West existed and where western icons like Cochise, Geronimo, Elfego Baca, Captain Jack Crawford, and the Apache Kid actually rode! We built Concho Hills to share. To share the beauty of this country, the nature and the cowboy culture that inspired us to call New Mexico home. Our guests praise our horseback experiences, family atmosphere, ranching activities, historical tours and fantastic scenery! Our all–inclusive rate includes your accommodation, family-style meals, and "cowboy life" activities. If you want to lend a hand with our chores or just relax, we can accommodate your ranch vacation desires. See our webpage...

Practically perfect in every way...

It was so wonderful to see the owners working together to insure I had a memorable vacation. I wasn't in want of anything. My room was not only beautiful but very comfortable. All is decorated in the style of the authentic antique west. A movie could be filmed here! I learned about the area history, ranch life, and the plants and animals native to the area. They truly care about the horses. The informed rider is not only safer but those around them are as well. Once I was out on the range it "all made sense", having had one on one instruction. Thank you for your patience with a seasoned rider... Sometimes "new dogs" are easier to teach. It was truly a fantastic week for me.

Loved our stay at Lavendar Casita #2

Reviewed By PWDs5

We stayed in the Lavender Casita #2 for four nights and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The casita had a living room, bedroom, bathroom, eat-in roomy kitchen and laundry room. The bench outside the front door was a perfect place for morning coffee. The Casita has an adobe fireplace, though we didn't have a chance to use it. The grounds are well kept, and the area around the hot tub is a terrific place to gather with numerous table/chair groupings. The location of the property is terrific. It's an easy 0.5 mile walk to the plaza with lovely shops and restaurants. We'd definitely stay again!

Zen for the Soul

Reviewed By rubieskye

I visited Ghost Ranch in May (2019), it was closing time, the storm was brewing..I drove around the Ranch a bit, and knew I had to come back to hike the canyons. I returned this Oct. Solo. The weather was changing. I hiked, ate at the dining hall, slept well, went on the Georgia O'keefe Landscape tour. I loved it all. I didn't have a chance to do yoga! I'll be back. The accommodations were rustic. Dining Hall is cafeteria style. Vegan, vegetarian, non gluten options. This use to be a "dude" ranch. Not she-she poo-poo. Very comfortable, lots to do, or not, breathe deeply.

Family reunion

We enjoyed three cabins and there were plenty of places to play or be quiet. We enjoyed cooking in the pavilion kitchen, walking the trails and fishing in the private ponds and the fish hatchery. The catwalk is an intriguing park and the people of Glenwood were kind. To me Los Olmos is glamping and a place to make family memories.

My husband and I traveled here for a couple of days of rest after a busy weekend of traveling across the state;boy did we pick the perfect place! Our hosts Karen & Adam, were so thoughtful and know how to treat their guests. From the comfortable bed with lots of pillows, the beautiful art on the walls, organic personal care products and comfy robes for relaxing. The casita had beautiful views of the mountains and ranch in every room. We went to visit the horses and hiked around the 40 acre property. We saw jack rabbits and all kinds of birds. At night, the stars seemed so close you felt like you could touch them! I would highly recommend twoponyzranch for anyone who needs to get away, relax, write, or just enjoy nature. We will definitely return!

Simply Wonderful

Reviewed By fwkdecker

Our family has stayed at Los Pinos for a week in 2016 and 2019. We just booked our 2020 week. What a remarkable place to experience the joy and excitement of the mountains. The pictures will not do justice to the smells of pine trees, daily freshly baked bread or pure air. With access to the Pecos and dozens of hikes out her back door- this place is for nature lovers. No WiFi and no noise. Bring a book and drawing pencils. Let time pass without being “productive”. Get a way from screens and fall asleep with the sun. Ride a horse and see hidden lakes. Do a puzzle. Sit by a fire as it rains outside. We never want to leave.

Hurd La Rinconada Gallery & Guest Homes

Fabulous Place to Stay

Reviewed By DEngelJ

The Hurd Gallery in San Patricio, New Mexico is wonderful enough with gorgeous Peter Hurd, Michael Hurd and Henriette Wyeth Hurd paintings, etchings, woodcuts, etc. to buy. But the guest cottages are even better! The one we stayed in has a very large living room, a small but fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, two large bedrooms with two full en-suite baths and a small conservatory room off one bedroom. There is a large back terrace with porch furniture. You could live forever here in the beautiful setting of the Hurd ranch.
