The best available Lodges to stay near Windhoek

May 3, 2023 Leonarda Pillsbury

Many visitors to Namibia start their adventure in Windhoek, the capital and largest city of this South African country. Nama, Herero, German, Afrikaans, and British cultures have influenced the growth and development of Windhoek. Visit the statue of Hosea Kutako, a nationalist hero, in the gardens surrounding the Tintenpalast, the seat of the Namibian legislature, or chow down on ostrich kebab or zebra steak at Joe’s Beerhouse before leaving on a safari into the Namibian wilderness.

Our running group spent one night at Auas Safari Lodge. The staff was extremely friendly and went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Lots os personal touches like cake and tea/coffee in the afternoon and special recipe droë wors on the game drive. I was most impressed that they were willing to accommodate the dietary choices of a vegan, diabetic and gluten sensitive person on very short notice.

Worth a visit!

This fairly new lodge is up to standards and well situated in a beautiful area, close to Windhoek (50 min. drive). Easy to reach and not much more than a 30 minute drive from the airport (fairly priced transfers available). Restaurant, lodges and villas are beautiful and comfortable. Quality of the food is good (the breakfast buffet is one of the best I had in Namibia). Bar prices are reasonable and they sell their self produced red wines that definitely can compete with the better South African wines. Note: their (also self produced) Brandy is just world class. Childfriendly and as well the lodges as the available villas have a stunning view with a large group of baboons to be seen daily roaming around the lodge for a wildlife experience. Just don’t feed them!! The area is safe and ideal for (guided) hiking or biking. Gamedrives and walks available. Sustainability and ecofriendliness are valued. Part of the revenues go to wildlifeprotection, also to be visited at the ‘farm’ close by. Staff is friendly and helpful. Suitable to visit for couples, families as well as groups

Not entirely what I expected

Reviewed By cmouto323134

I chose to stay here as the price was quite cheap in comparison with other properties. Now I know why. The check-in was slightly strange. Almost as if they didn't expect me. I had to show them my booking in order to check in and to get the type of room I paid for. Breakfast was disappointing at times. The one morning I pitched up and they didn't even have filter coffee made. The lady told me to make myself instant coffee. The same instant coffee I have in my room. Not good enough, so I skipped breakfast. I decided to buy myself decent coffee and a French press at the mall nearby so that I could make my own coffee and skipped breakfasts altogether. The showers took forever to get warm and there were no bathing products provided. They were very helpful in ironing my shirts and the washing service worked great. All in all the room was quite good, but the bathroom was nothing special with some strange spots against the walls. The bed was comfy and the location was great.

Worst Place I have ever seen

Reviewed By anna131413

By far the worst place I have ever seen. Will rather sleep in the car than in this place. Booked and paid for 2 family rooms in 2018. On arrival we were told that they cant give us one of the booked rooms, due to n customer not checking out. Walked around the hotel, just to find that the backyard was filthy, open garbage bags standing around, the kitchen was a total mess. So so so dirty, the list goes on and on and on. Took photos of everything. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Dont waset your time or money on this place. We did not sleep there because it was so dirty etc. Reported them to the Namibian tourism board we requested a full refund, but excuses everyday. Hopefully this place doors will be closed for good.

Leopard Lodge

Leopard Lodge - this rustic guest lodge is located in unique hilly terrain, covering an area of more than 5,600 hectares. The lodge has bungalows grouped around the main lodge building. Enjoy beautiful walks in the savannah. You can encounter antelopes, giraffe, zebras and birdlife. Of particular interest is the waterhole near the lodge, which is visited by the animals regularly. Feeding of predators can be organized either separately or during a game drive. Guests can observe the feeding of spotted hyenas, cheetahs and crocodiles. Leopard Lodge is a paradise for rest and relaxation. This is a unique place where guests can escape from the overcrowded city and enjoy the solitude and nature. Comfortable surroundings, great food, service and variety of activities - this is all Leopard Lodge.

Lodge has seen better days

Reviewed By Diggfrog

Beware - this Lodge seems to be going downhill rather fast. Why? 1. Check-In was a complete mess and it took over 30 min to find somebody who was able to hand out keys to the room. Unfriendliest personnel we encountered on entire trip in Namibia. 2. Rooms are rather basic (which is okay) but in a state of slow decay. Lights and furniture are broken and telling the personnel just results in a "yes, we know". 3. The grounds are rather dirty and no one makes an attempt to pick up any trash or clean up after the geese that have made the lawn their home. 4. The Dinner was awful - it remains a complete mystery to us how a cook can turn freshly shot Kudu into something with the texture of a leather belt. Quite a few guest fed the meat straight to the resident dogs (which seemed used to it). Veggies where completley overcooked but helped to avoid starvation. Dessert was something resembling pudding, but lacking any taste. Breakfast next morning rather spartan and actually skipped by quite few guests who rather opted for an early departure. 5. The owner only cared for two groups of hunters and never even glimpsed at other, non-hunting-guests. He was more interested in the hunters booking hunting excursions (you pay for each shot animal) and supplying the Russian hunters with enough ice for their drinks. Seems that his wife has left and she was the one keeping the Lodge organized and running. Sad. 6. There is a small pool but the water quality is rather dubious and the area hasn't been cleaned in weeks. 7. Some find it funny seeing completely drunk hunters staggering from the Jeep in the afternoon or seeing them drinking Whiskey and/or Gin for breakfast and then setting out on their "excursions" with a cooler full of more Whiskey, Beer, and Gin. But if you find it a bit unnerving to be around drunk people with loaded rifles - stay somewhere else. 8. As mentioned in other reviews: 4x4 is needed to reach the lodge since it is over 40 km of rough street (which can be done in a 4x2) but the last 6km are a real backbreaker that would kill most normal rentals. Summary: Unless you want to hunt and drink stay somewhere else. Even the relative proximity to the International Airport doesn't warrant staying there. Rather book somethink nice in Windhoek and drive a few more kilometers.

Murangi Travel Lodge

conveinet, great experience, a few minor issues

Reviewed By Duncan G

very convenient for airport, great safari style. grounds around very wild and nice to explore, if your OK with some wildlife about. Minor issues are lack of clear signs for driving in. Our bus got completely lost on the dirt tracks between the main road and the lodge. Also inadequate signs for getting to our lodge from reception. We were told by reception staff how to get to our chalet, but within 100 meters we were lost, no lighting and no signs. A bit scary as it was almost dark and we were aware that wild animals could be about. lovely area, nice pool.
