Kyoto is Japan's most traditional city. The lush and verdant cityscape encompasses sprawling rock gardens, vast palaces, and tall temples. The streets are alive with businessmen hurrying past Geiko and Makio in their full kimono, both on their way to work along cherry-tree lined walks. A historic hub that celebrates Japanese culture, from kabuki to textile weaving, Kyoto can also be surprisingly modern. It is one of Japan's largest, busiest, and most visited cities, with packed shopping mega-centers and high-rise offices. Suffused with shrines, outdoor markets, and nature walks, the small but bountiful location is also home to some of Japan's most contemporary architectural marvels, hippest cafes and eateries, and modish local brands and shops. It makes Kyoto a playful and sublime city, studded with as many bars and hole-in-the-wall fried food shops along the Kamogawa river as it is suffused with ancient ryokan and delicate wagashi shops. Kyoto is in the cross-hairs of Japan's most artful past and its energetic present.

I lived at Fujitaya from March to December 2021. Covid was a bleak time but it gave me the chance to gain a Japanese family. I will always be grateful to Masa san and Saki chan for all the glorious memories, the events, the friends I've met thre. I'll be back!

Built 50 years ago, and once used as residence by the local people in Yasaka, Kyoto, this hotel inherited that history and renovated the building for a new start. 【ROOMS 】RC HOTEL KYOTO YASAKA offers guest rooms with three themes "Green," "Folk Handicraft," and "Art." 【BAR】 The bar is located right next to the Reception Desk. We have various kinds of local Kyoto beer and sake. Please relax at the end of the day. 【ACCESS】 From Kyoto Station, Take bus 202, 206, 207, or 100. Get off at the “Kiyomizu Michi” stop. Enter the street named “Yasaka-Dori” to the east, after 200 meters beyond the Yasaka Pagoda (Hoganji Temple); the hotel is on your right.
Very unusual hotel - great fun - huge rooms, fabulous views, gorgeous space. It's a bit weird that they don't change the sheets (we were there for three days) but then again, I don't need clean sheets every day when I am at home! Really nice products in the bathroom. Great area, but very very quiet at night.

Excellent location in the town near the Togetsu-kyo bridge. Nice views. Small but comfortable western style room. Typical Japanese breakfast. Staff did not speak English but they used a real-time translation service by phone. In Arashiyama, we enjoyed the old railroad ride next to the Hozugawa river, that goes to the start of the exciting river boat ride. We enjoyed walking trails along the river and up to the garden and Tenryu-ji temple. We were there at the end of November and enjoyed the peak foliage.

This ryokan is basic, and has lots of rules! The Goods: - Short walk from Kyoto Station's north entrance (the side with the bus terminal) - almost a straight shot! - Behind major shopping and near tourist locations (Kyoto Tower, Higashi Honganji Temple, etc.). - Near a grocery store (for those budget-minded -- the store is to the west - don't remember the exact location). - Has an onsen (public bath), self-serve laundry, and drink vending machine. - In-room toilet, shower, sink. - Moderately friendly staff (I got the impression an older family runs it.) The Bad: - The rules. Doors are locked at 11 PM. Guess I can't go listen to jazz at a bar and come back at 1 AM... Kind of killed my tourist evenings. And DON'T put your shoes in the wrong place! - The onsen (at least men's side) is tiny. Two small people, or one mid-size person. And forget late night relaxing: closes at 10 PM. (Dashing back to make the 11 PM ryokan closing then soaking isn't going to work. You're too late.) - The room was sparse (not unusual for a ryokan), but unusually so. Kind of basic, with the obligatory wall picture (old, faded), a table, a TV, an in-room safe, and that's about it. - Hot water was provided for tea in a thermos. By the time I got around to making tea, it was tepid. - I would have appreciated an offer of laundry service, but it's do-it-yourself only. The Ugly: - Mosquitoes! Lifted the toilet lid to be greeted by at least a dozen mosquitoes! At least I had the presence of mind to close the door fast to keep them in the WC! On the bright side, it gave me something to do (kill them) when doing my morning bowel purge. - While generally clean, the room had a tiny bit of mold and mildew (or their stains) creeping in (shower ceiling, grout, etc.). The place needed a good scrub. Good to know: - If you arrive early, they'll store your bag in the hall until your room is ready. Then they'll put it in the room. - The pillows and futon were thinner than most. Ask for two or three pillows if you are a medium to thick pillow person. I used two futons stacked on one another. In summary, I'll stay somewhere else next time.

Stayed here on the World Tea Tours - Tea Tour of Japan 2019. A wonderful, quiet, traditional ryokan up in the hills and outside of the noise of Kyoto. Excellent service and food. Had our own tea ceremony in the pavilion that runs along the small river. Would certainly stay again. Small onsen but I was alone most of the time.

The hostel has such a convenient location that is close to both Kyoto University of foreign studies (Where I participated in a Tourism project) and the downtown - shopping area. I felt like it took me only 15-20 minutes to walk straight to the center. The hosts were pretty nice! But I didn't like the fact that they restricted the bath time. Another mini hiccup was that the hallway and water in the toilet were just freezing! Brrrrgh

We provide you four Japanese-style rooms. Each rooms are completely private rooms. Please enjoy talking with other room's guest in the dining space on the ground floor. Please talk over people to people, you will create a new splendid memory of your travel. That is a very memorable thing to you.
