When we arrived, the welcoming was rather cold and unfriendly, however, information was given about restaurants in the vicinity. Our room, the Honeymoon Suite, was really smelly, as if it had not been ventilated for weeks. The same smell was captured in the towels in the bathroom, where there was a candle holder with candles that were completely bent, probably due to high heat, but had never been exchanged. There was a spider web on the ground next to the bath tub. The refrigerator was not clean. I would not book again.

Enjoyed our few days at the comfortably furnished Green Monkey Orange chalet - lovely walks through the peaceful forest trails . Conveniently close to other attractions too including the Pineapple farm and of course Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. Nerischia so pleasant and very helpful in attending to our various requests.

Some context: First trip to South Africa and after nearly a week in Cape Town attending a wonderful business event, this was to be my first time seeing (as my native South African friends told me) ‘the real Africa.’ Hluhluwe River Lodge has set the bar very high! A friend and I were greeted by a friendly and engaged staff member while our luggage was swiftly wheeled to our respective chalets. After an hour long walk on one of the nature trails, a first rate steak dinner, accompanied by a wonderful high-value South African Pinotage, was served on the outdoor terrace and I could sense I was in for a special couple of days. My chalet (#2) was clean, comfortable, everything worked and had a huge shower with enough water pressure that I’d love to have it back in the States! We worked through Reception to book a half day 4x4 guided tour into the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, and the breakfast (for two) that was packed was large enough for two adults’ breakfast AND lunch. There are many options on where to stay in this area of KwaZulu-Natal, but if you are looking for a respite from your screens/monitors and want a laid back lodging experience off the beaten path encircled by nature, come to the Hluhluwe River Lodge. I can’t wait to come back and this time bring my family. Kudos to the entire staff (including Schona and Ayenda) for making this American’s first visit to ‘the real Africa’ unforgettable.

Shonalanga Lodge remains a popular lodge to stay at in Vryheid because of its friendly staff, clean rooms, hearty breakfast, competitive room rates, FREE Wifi and 60% of the rooms have their own, next to the room undercover parking. Even though Vryheid is a very safe town with lovely residents, we have taken extra care to ensure your safety. Therefore, our property is surrounded by high perimeter walls and the entrance to the lodge is controlled by an electric gate and manned by a gate attendant throughout the night.
Excellent reception and welcome. Good hospitality and compassion shown and expressed when my grandson hit the glass panel of the door. We were just overwhelmed with the support. I'll recommend Shonalanga to any family travelling with children. Make it your second home. we always do.

Chalets & campsites in a lush garden of indigenous treesBushbaby Lodge is the perfect break-away in the heart of Elephant Coast. In a picturesque tropical garden under the shade of enormous indigenous trees with South African hospitality at its best. Treat yourself to traditional home cooking, or make use of the equipped communal kitchen and cater for yourself. Enjoy leisurely walks while viewing the rich bird live and game of the area. We are only 20 minutes away from the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve and various exciting activities can be organized in the area.
I can honestly say the Bushbaby Lodge is an awesome place to stay, it is close to the game reserve and affordable. Although this is a budget lodge and there are no frills, the accommodation is comfortable and clean and the staff were awesome and friendly. We will definately be back here soon.

We had a wonderful long weekend at Umkhumbi with our three young kids in the newly developed self catering chalets. Excellent accommodation in a beautiful sand forest setting. We walked and road bikes and enjoyed the amazing bird life and animals. Special birds including Neergards Sunbird and Woodward’s Batis. Missed the Narina Trogon, Green Malkoha and African Broadbill but will definitely return for another stay. Anton and Emma were great hosts and Anton’s reptile exhibition an eye opener and something we will all remember. Kids didn’t want to leave and neither did we!! Couldn’t recommend the place enough.

This was a great experience for all of us. Walks were very special seeing things and discuss aspects of nature you wouldn't normally discuss. Meals prepared and presented with pride. Having a very fussy 6 year old we would have taken more of her own food. Eg cheerios cereal. Staff were very helpful in altering her food where they could. Martin our host was amazing and so happy to share all his knowledge and experience of the bush with us. Idea person for the job. Thank you Zululand lodge. If you want a bush experience this is the place to visit. Loved being in the tents and watching the sun rise from my bed through the insect proof meshing while listening to the woodpecker working in the tree next to us.

WE Bushcamp & Horse Safaris was known before as Wildebees ecolodge. After recent renovations and the arrival of a new team we decided it was time for change. So from now on we are WE. The Bushcamp is situated on a small private reserve, bordering the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, about 13km away from the rural town of Hluhluwe. We offer several accommodation options to a maximum of 38 guests in 17 houses and chalets. WE are not only a bushcamp, next to accommodation, bar and restaurant we offer ‘on site’ horse riding safaris. Our horses roam freely on our property so don’t be surprised if if you meet some of them around your room. The camp is owner managed. Both owners come from the Netherlands, most of the staff members have a Zulu background and live in traditional, rural communities. WE Bushcamp & Horse Safaris tries to operate the camp with environmental awareness and social responsibility in mind.
We had a wonderful experience at WE Bushcamp. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and knowledgeable. Emails were answered promptly and efficiently. We enjoyed the beautiful surroundings, the quiet and the clean rustic camps.
