Things to do in Wiltshire

At Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa, we want to inspire our guests to let go; try new things, sometimes be a bit silly. Run up a hill or roll down it. Paddle in our icy river, laugh like a drain, make up a new cocktail, sample new flavours, and really have fun. Located within easy reach of Bath and Salisbury (off the A36), only 6 miles from the famed Longleat Safari and Adventure Park. Set in 30 acres of established grounds boasting kitchen gardens, orchard and trout fishing from the banks of the river Wylye running along the hotel, deep in the heart of the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Ideal for adults and children alike.
In years past Bishopstrow was a second tier country house hotel that slipped slowly and gracefully into decrepitude. Its new owners have put some life back into it, stripped away layers of chintzy decor, and have gone for a rather chicly shabby look. We were quite surprised by how casual it all was. I speculate that their inspiration is the hugely successful mini-chain of Pig hotels. We stayed just the one night en route from Norfolk to Cornwall. We had booked a ‘roomy room’ and as members of Small Luxury Hotels we had hopes of an upgrade which wasn’t offered. Instead we were given a newly renovated room on the top floor. It was verging on the characterful with many wooden beams and a rather chinoiserie style of decor. We had an excellent bathroom, with a shower in the tub, and all the amenities you need, even including a Dyson hairdryer. As the hotel is still a work in progress, there was noise from workmen at about 8am as the room immediately below us was getting the full treatment. This didn’t bother us too much as we planned to check out by 9am. Downstairs the reception rooms are seriously stripped back - this isn’t remotely a luxury hotel. There is a pleasant outdoor terrace with interesting topiaries. The restaurant is more of a fancy cafe these days with a dinner menu offering variations of ‘pub grub.’ We didn’t foresee ourselves eating dish and chips for dinner but that is what we did. And pretty good it was, too. A pity that breakfast wasn’t on the same level. We also had a swim in the indoor pool which was a good size and well-heated. A plus point, certainly in cold weather, is that the pool can be reached directly from your room without going outside. Service levels were high and done with great charm. We paid £217 for bed and breakfast and that, we felt, was astonishing value for money these days.

The 4* Legacy Rose & Crown Hotel is an original 13th Century coaching inn located in the City of Salisbury with stunning views across the River Avon & Salisbury Cathedral. There are many original features lovingly retained. The original section of the building still boast its wooden beams through-out and our Oak Bar also enjoys the log fire that is lit in our winter months. A selection of Feature and River View Rooms are available along with our original beamed rooms, please ask our reservation or reception teams for details & availability. Our Pavilion Restaurant where the hotel serves Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner to residents and non-residents offers picturesque views of Salisbury Cathedral and the River Avon combined with ‘Sheep in the meadows’ by constable. Our modern Avon Bar which has kept its original beams and other features is the perfect place for meeting friends. We offer Morning Tea & Coffees, Afternoon Cream Teas & Coffee, Lunches and Dinner and drinks through-out the day.
Holes in the net curtains in the suite, TV remote not working, hotel in a general state of disrepair, dirty tables in the restaurant, torn umbrella on the patio. Bacon and sausage saved from the servery presumably for the next day! everything else disposed of. Absolutely shocking.

The hosts were lovely. The room was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and spacious. Great to have the garden areas to use too. The breakfast was fantastic and all the produce used were high quality and the selection was great. Highly recommend and will definitely return.

I am a solo traveler, and came in planning to order a ribeye steak after looking at the menu outside. I asked for a table for one from the bartender. With an uninviting look, he said that he wasn't sure that anything was available. While nearly full, I did see an available small table in one of the main dining areas. The bartender though said that they're mostly booked up and offered this non-descript, un-elegant table next to the bar - literally the worst table in the house. I could tell that he was not into my business. It was also a time that was AFTER the dinner rush. I said, "are you sure you don't have a [regular] table, I was going to order a steak." No comment. Is it my imagination, or do many English restaurants have an aversion to solo travelers? In any event, I declined their least desirable table ("an offer I'd have to refuse") and walked out the door. So, while I'm sure they have great food, though unfriendly service, I'm going to have to close the book on Chapter House due to their seeming prejudice against solo diners.

Beautifully appointed, each room offers everything the traveller could desire! Bedrooms with historic character, detail & ensuite facilities. Breakfasts, coffee & cake, drinks & evening platter menu. We ended up at The Merchant’s House at the very last minute. We had booked a different hotel which was a such a poor standard we left after 10mins. This was the Jubilee bank holiday so we weren’t sure we could get in anywhere! After phoning a few places we found that the Merchant’s house had vacancies. From the moment we entered the hotel we were impressed with the friendly service. Ok , the rooms aren’t large but everything was there. The room was clean and well maintained. Breakfast was really good, fruit yoghurt, pastries, full English and the best bit, eggs of any sort cooked to order. The best thing about this hotel is the staff. Really friendly and accommodating. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

The site of this Wetherspoon pub has been occupied by an inn since the 15th century. By c1520, it was known as the King's Head, and it retained that name until it was rebuilt in the 1880s. The County Hotel was, itself, a change of name some time during the 1880s or 1890s. Before then, it was the Kings Head and Brewery. We have 33 individual bedrooms. All of our rooms are en suite and include tea- and coffee-making facilities, air conditioning, a hair dryer, TV and free Wi-Fi, also available in the pub. Due to our central location, we do have a limited number of quiet rooms available so please telephone in advance to request one. We have no onsite parking but there is a city centre car park we recommend that is only a 3-5 minute walk away. You are able to stop on the pub entrance to unload your luggage before you go and park.
I stayed at the King’s Head several nights and had two breakfasts and two meals in the pub below, as well as a few drinks. Both the hotel part and the pub were better than I expected. In fact, this was the best Wetherspoon bar I’ve been to, though the first of their hotels I've stayed at. Wetherspoon’s are always the hardest places to review. You have to give them significant credit for offering food and drink at such friendly prices; but inevitably that means compromises. As the menus and prices are similar in all this chain’s pubs, the differences are often down to the particular management and staff in each branch. I felt that the staff in this one were a great part of why I chose to eat and drink here. Good at their job, hard-working, friendly, and a credit to the company. They checked my food, kept the surfaces clean and the place ticking over efficiently. Occasionally over-long queues built up at the bar, though, probably down to staff shortages. * My food, as at all Spoons I’ve eaten at, tended, with the exception of the pizza, to be lukewarm in places. Which is a pity, because the Freedom Breakfasts I had were otherwise OK, as was the lasagne, which, to be fair, came with a bowl of hot chips. The pizza had good flavour but was soft, meaning I couldn’t eat slices of it by hand, which I prefer. That all said, these meals were priced remarkably reasonably. The real ales sold here were terrific and half the price of similar elsewhere--for example over the road at Bishops Mill. Another reason why Wetherspoon deserve respect. The number of pensioners and students drinking at the King’s Head tells its own story about the value on offer. Another thing I admire about Spoons is the contribution they make to the architectural heritage of their properties. The King’s Head is a stunning building in ochre sandstone, set on a corner with the River Avon running round it. Customers can sit outside in these pleasant surroundings, or inside in a high, balconied hall with many retro-cool artistic features. * The hotel section is in a slightly different category from the pub, because though its rooms are a good price for Salisbury, there are other national hotel chains that come cheaper, such as (if you book early) Travelodge. But for £70 a night I loved my little single-bed room up in a corner gable, even if I caught a cut forehead from banging it on the rafter which angled down between the bed and the window. I’ll bring a hard hat next time. The room was quiet, with a gorgeous view over the river to the old mill, and even had a bath. The towels were missing so I had to go and ask for some at the desk. Other than that, I had a great stay, no complaints.

The hotel features the award winning Squires Restaurant and Bar, a lounge, 3 conference suites and a free car park. Nearby local leisure facilities just a short walk away include swimming, sauna, squash, tennis, snooker, horse riding and golf.
This hotel is extremly old and not kept well in shape. We booked the best room and everything hundred years old and worn down. It's more than shocking and disgusting. We just left again. It is not acceptable. The room was dirty, there was toiled paper in the toilet, stains on the bed linen and the color from the window was falling of. There is no sign of a 4 star hotel and it smells very old. A couple before us at reception complained as well. The lady at the reception was very kind. We could leave and the paid amount will be refunded. This hotel must be renovated otherwise we do not recommen it in any way.

Following poor vibes when making the reservation at the hotel, things got better. Lovely location only 5 mins from junction 17 of M4. Great old building and grounds which were very well maintained. We were at a wedding which went exceptionally well, food was good and for a wedding an excellent venue. The room we had 19 was huge, queen size bed, sofa and big bathroom. Some paintwork a little worn and shabby but who sits on the room looking at that. Recommend the brewers fayre 9 miles up the road to eat as prices in hotel a bit on the high side. Would stay again, thanks to all the staff for making it a great time. Have the full English breakfast, really yummy.
