I don’t understand how this place has such good reviews. It’s very surface level nice but when you get over the wow factor of having high ceilings you realize that it’s nasty. First red flag was THE SHOWER NOT CONNECTED TO THE WALL?????? I’m sorry how does no one see that has a problem. Then the AC was just stuck on and it was freezing. Then the front desk chick texted us with her person phone number to see how we were doing. I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels and have never had that happen to me. The hair dryer had lint and hair all over it. The carpet was peeling away from the wall. This is the most expensive hotel in Van Horn. I can’t imagine what the cheeper ones look like. I’d never go back.

The Hotel El Capitan offers a unique lodging and dinning experience for all travelers. The El Capitan is a historic gem in West Texas and loved by many across the country. We specialize in quality customer service while offering modern amenities and an unforgettable experience. History Hotel El Capitan was built in 1930 by the gateway Hotel Chain, led by Charles Basset, at the crossroads of the forthcoming Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe and Big Bend National Parks. The hotel was designed by famous architect Henry Trost and constructed by McKee Construction Company, all of El Paso. The building operated as a hotel until the late 1960's. In 1973, soon after interstate 10 opened and a majority of the traffic had bypassed the once popular landmark, it was converted into the Van Horn State Bank. In 2007, Lanna and Joe Duncan of Fort Davis purchased the building from the bank with the plan to convert back into a hotel. It was one of the five hotels built by the Gateway Hotels in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. Basset built the hotels in an attempt to encourage tourism within 200 miles of El Paso. Trost was responsible for the design of over 550 buildings from California to Texas between the 1900's until his death in 1933.
This hotel is the most charming hotel I've stayed in -- in a long time! An oasis in West Texas where there's not much charming to see. The restaurant is great, the people are super friendly, and they are pet-friendly! It checks all the boxes. (and cheaper than the Holiday Inn!)

Brand new hotel in Van Horn, TX. Opened in December 2016! Hotel features spacious sleeping rooms, comfortable beds, free WiFi in room and public areas. We also offer Free hot breakfast and coffee everyday. Our rooms have a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee machine. We are your perfect stop on I-10 just a little over 100 miles out of El Paso, TX exit 138.
I was here for a 3 night stay. I found multiple things wrong in my room that made me not want to touch anything. There was hair all along the bathroom floor and keep in mind I’m bald so it couldn’t be mine. My shower curtain was dark yellow brown at the bottom. There was even pee on the toilet rim. It was awful.

Gem of a find! Immaculate room, quiet, AC stays on vs. kicking on and off like some other places. Sheets and towels excellent and smelled wonderful, like crispy. Staff was great! And the price was just amazing. Will stay here again!! It’s not a new place but it’s been well upgraded and very well taken care of.

Room was large, included fridge and microwave. If you are the Highway side there will be noise, they give you earplugs or you can ask to switch sides. Breakfast had plenty of choices, the only hot item is waffles but they do offer hard boiled eggs for those who don’t want to start the day with carbs. The room has a tub/shower combo which is becoming increasingly rare.
