Many waterfalls dot the 14-kilometer trail linking this resort to scenic Lake Towada. Enjoy the area's natural beauty while soaking in the inn's luxurious baths, too.
Summary: - Great experience overall near Oirase Keiryu. - Don't make the same mistake as we did. Spend a few extra thousand yen ($20 or so USD) for a "Modern" room or a Japanese-style room. Avoid the "Twin Room." If possible, ask for a room at the new East Wing. - If you don't mind bees, don't be afraid of using the apple-scented shampoo and then go to the outdoor onsen. Location: 5 stars Staff: 5 stars Service: 5 stars Breakfast: 5 stars Lounges: 5 stars Room: 3 stars (for the price compared to other rooms in the hotel) We had a wonderful stay. Everything about this hotel was perfect and just what you would expect from Hoshino. The lobby is modern and stylish, the food was beyond amazing, and the service was just excellent. The only exception was the Twin Room that we chose. The room we stayed at was located at the West Wing, which is much older than the new East Wing. The room was clean, but due to its age, I felt like I stayed at a history museum that showcased 5-star hotel rooms from the 70s. The furniture was a little worn out. There was no central air conditioning (or an AC with remote control); instead, you need to use the old machine that hid in the corner, which comes with a dial. I remember the last time I saw one of those was at a motel room in Arizona in the 90s. You need to walk to the machine and manually turn the dial every time you want to change the settings. You could also tell how old the room was by its smell. Thoughtfully, they provided a bottle of deodorizing spray. I expected the room to be a lot nicer for its $500 USD price tag. But I'm the one to blame as I didn't opt for the "Modern Room" nor one of the Japanese-style rooms. If I go back in the future, I will definitely pay $20 more for a newer room. I just didn't expect the room could be THAT old. That was the only complaint during the stay. Everything else was perfect. The apple scented shampoo smelled so good that it attracted a few bees when I went to the outdoor onsen. So I would recommend using the regular shampoo, and only use the delicious smelling apple shampoo after you're done with the outdoor onsen. They also have free rental boots that were perfect for the hike along the river. The trails could be muddy, so make sure you pick up a pair before heading out. Overall, we had a great time. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The free shuttle for the hiking trail was excellent with hourly departures. Also the 12pm checkout time worked really well for the morning hike after breakfast. I will stay here again if I visit again, but at a different room for sure.

An old, traditional onsen hidden away on top of the mountains, we drove in the dark and it was snowing when we arrived, but the rooms and bedding were very warm. Doors and partitions are thin so be sure to keep quiet at night. Onsen was old and rustic but quite comfortable, had a strong mineral smell - don't forget to check out the secret underground spring hidden behind a door, you have to go down some slippery steps! Dinner and breakfast were both very filling and lovely.

Stayed in this hotel from Nov 1st. 2017 and will depart on Nov 20th. 2017. The price is very reasonable and the place is clean. Room service everyday with tooth brush and tooth paste provided daily as well as razor. The also served daily Japanese buffet breakfast on the main floor for JPY 600 if you choose not to include it during booking the hotel. Towada is a small farming for its horse for that there are restaurants that serve horse meats. The hotel is close to many places to visit like the art station and centre. Do not forget to visit Lake Towada. Rated excellent. That is personal opinion.

We went in the busy season, across a weekend for autumn leaf viewing in October and the hotel was very full. Expecting this, we reserved the room online some months in advance. Given it was 21,200 yen for 2 nights for 2 people including breakfast it was pretty good value. However, it should be said that we stayed in a Dormy Inn business hotel in Matsumoto which was cheaper, more spacious and better all around. So comparatively speaking it was an average experience. The room was extremely small, as would be expected in a business hotel, but was very clean with a contemporary design. We hired a car to see this region and found they had a huge carpark, so even though it was booked to capacity there was never a problem parking. The restaurant was not open for dinner across the weekend, so we were forced to look for meals elsewhere. If you don't mind walking several blocks there are numerous Izakaya to choose from. However, if you are wanting something simpler, then a car is necessary. Or if you're OK with convenience store food, there is one on a corner not far from the hotel. There are laundry facilities in the mens and womens communal baths on the ground floor (or first floor - depending on what culture you are from). The baths are clean and functional. Breakfast was plentiful, but most of the hot food was cold. On Sunday morning it was full, but by the time we had selected from the buffet a table became available. Most guests left on Sunday night, so there was hardly anyone there for Monday morning breakfast. If you are looking for budget accomodation in the Towada area then this is probably worth considering. There are much nicer places (many ryokans), located closer to the Oriase stream and Lake Towada, but they are also very expensive during the peak seasons. Finally about the area itself. If you get the chance to see the autumn leaves in Towada, it is stunning. And If you hire a car, traffic from Towada city to Lake Towada is extremely heavy so allow plenty of time. And if you can manage to find somewhere to park along the Oriase stream there are some wonderful walks to be had. A cruise across Lake Towada is well priced and relaxing. Towada Art Centre in Towada city is a great interactive art experience - not to be missed.

My wife and I recently took a vacation trip to Aomori and stayed around Towada area for enjoying the beautiful nature of red leafs and the most magnificent (Oirase Gorge) river stream coming down from the lake Towada. We stayed at Pony Hotel for 6 nights and the first 2 nights was in a double bedroom and the remaining 4 nights was in a twin room. The reason was cheaper to stay in double bedroom during the peak long weekend in Japan. We both love enjoying natural hot spring and this hotel offer both indoor and outdoor facilities for free when staying with them. The stay plan we reserved was stay with breakfast and we purposely did not choose to include dinner in the hotel. Surprisingly the additional charge set dinner course is only 1500 yen / person (need to notify the hotel front desk at least a night in advance) and the food is very delicious considering the great bargain price for set dinner. One of the hotel staff forgot to notify restaurant to prepare set dinner for us in one of the evening and we ran out of choice to pick from their a la carte menu because there are limited barbecue beef or horse meat selections and mostly are horse meats cooked in different style. We initially refused to try horse meat but under the influence and highly recommended pick from the hotel staff, we end up ordered the horse meat and it was cooked with lot of onion. It was very delicious and even now we still thinking of the horse meat while writing this review. Another great thing is: You can bring your own drinks to the restaurant such as beer, sake, soft drink, etc. free of corkage charge which is seldom allowed in other hotel’s restaurant. The hotel staff is also very friendly and helpful. One of the staff is very fluent in English who can well take care of all our needs and queries at the hotel when we can't speak Japanese. Besides there was a bit of smell from the bathroom in the twin room and a bit noisy from the cars access at the back of hotel, the overall of the room is clean and acceptable. If we were to return to Towada, we definitely will stay at Pony Hotel again!!

We stayed at Lake Towada/Towadako Lakeside 2 nights during our extended DIY tour of Tohoku this July. We used it between Mutsu/Shimokita and Hachimantai-Akita/Komagatake - and used it as a basecamp for hiking the Hakkoda Mountains and visiting Oirase Stream. From Mutsu, it was a 2-3 hour drive (it's about an hour to Hachimantai, and another 2 to Akita-Komagatake). The hotel is one of very few lake-shore hotels that is not out of business and/or boarded up, which is very sad. This was shocking to me personally because Lake Towada is beautiful and has always been pushed hard by the tourism industry. Looking at googlemap, the peninsula where the hotel is looks thriving - but when you actually arrive, it is shocking how economically depressed the area is. That said, the hotel was very good and when we were there, the dining room was about 60% full of Japanese couples and families on vacation. There is free parking on site. Although some rooms have lake-views, ours did not. My sister visited the on-site onsen and said it was decent. You can walk from the hotel easily along the scenic lake-shore, visit the Maidens and local shrines. We purchased a reservation with breakfast and dinner included - requesting the no-fish option. The dinners were set affairs that were large and elaborate - with 12-15 different items. On our first night, a Japanese couple bought us a big Sapporo because they thought our chopstick skills were so great! The breakfast buffet was 70:30 Japanese:Western. We strongly recommend including meals in the reservation because there are not a lot of nearby options given the economic situation. Hakkoda hiking is just over an hour away - and was a more challenging drive than we were expecting. We also enjoyed the Oirase Stream area (along the way) - but pretty much all of that "trail" is roadside, which was convenient but I wouldn't call it remote. We did not partake in any boat-touring of the lake; that is still going on - but likely serving only bus-touring daytrippers. We sincerely hope tourism returns to Lake Towada.

This property is of good value. It provided free parking. The receptionists were very friendly. The only downside was the pillow too flat with no support to the neck plus the mattress too hard. My back was hurting on the next morning.

The hotel is a bit dated especially at the onsen; food quality not impressive. Yet, considering it as a 2 meals included onsen hotel, price offered is pretty attractive. If you come to Towada Lake in Winter time without a car, Hotel Towadako will be a good choice. City bus runs between Hachinohe and Towada Lake stops 10 mins away. Another JR tourist bus run between Hanchinohe station and Towada Lake stops right in front of the hotel. In addition, this tourist bus runs along the Oirase scenic road and will stop at 3 main attractions for few minutes allowing the passengers come out to enjoy the view. The 3rd option to take the hotel free shuttle running between Hachinohe station; which can drop you (or pick up) at the Towada Art Center or Oirase Keiryu Hotel on request.
