Class in the Cheshire countryside

Reviewed By G6206GOrogerm

A very comfortable stay in a warm and friendly “house” of the perfect size and ambience. The rooms are large and well appointed with all modern conveniences. A perfect way to experience the beauty and charm of the Cheshire countryside. The food was well above average and the staff were friendly and polite. This was our second visit but will not be our last .

Golf Overnight Stay

Reviewed By E8168FZmw

We are a group of Seniors golfers and 16 of us stayed at the Portal for two rounds of golf and an overnight stay. I had fantastic advice and help in organising the event from Gareth Edwards who organised everything to our satisfaction. On arrival the reception staff were organised and ready to receive us and had all of our details and rooms organised. The rooms were excellent and all of the staff were attentive to our needs. The ‘Starter” gave us a comprehensive brief on the course whilst we consumed Coffee and Bacon buttees. We played both of the courses over the two days. The course's were challenging and both were in superb condition with brilliant views. I have seen some of the reviews and comments from others with lower overall ratings, however, they do not compare to our visit which was outstanding. I would recommend a stay here.

The Swan Tarporley

The 16th century Swan has been welcoming guests through its doors for over 400 years, and was once a convenient resting place for those travelling the 200 miles from London to Chester. Today, our comfortable rooms and welcoming bar and dining areas mean that The Swan continues to be a haven for visitors from far and wide. A regular winner of the Best Kept Village award, Tarporley appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Back then, Tarporley was home to just eight households, but today is one of the largest villages in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, with antique, curio, craft and fashion shops lining its streets. Some of The Swan’s most historic features are located in its Hunt Room, home to the Tarporley Hunt Club. Founded in 1762, it is the oldest in England. The club historically met twice annually at The Swan, with each meeting lasting seven days and the hunting taking place largely within the nearby Delamere Forest. In the founding set of rules, members were required to drink “three collar bumpers” after both dinner and supper, and, in the event of marriage, to present each club member with a pair of buckskin breeches. The Tarporley Hunt Club still meet once a year today, a quarter of a millennium after Obidiah Lane went hare coarsing with his chums and decided, after much merriment at the Swan, this should happen every year; “We shall meet for the purposes of general conviviality” he declared!

Very relaxed

Reviewed By tessie1

This is a charming coaching inn on the High St. it’s a very relaxing place to dine as the young staff are very laid back and friendly. Everything moves at a leisurely pace which is very refreshing for us London folk. We both opted for the smoked haddock pancakes and they were very tasty indeed. We both chose Snugbury’s ice cream for dessert and this was just as good as I remembered from my childhood - all in all, a jolly good meal. Highly recommended

AGGRESSIVE BARMAN

Reviewed By GardeningGuru1

My friend and I went in this pub on Easter Sunday for a meal. We went round looking for an empty table minding our own business when a very aggressive barman started to shout at us, This barman shouted in an aggressive tone of voice while banging a bottle on the bar. Aggressively he stated 'All the tables are reserved at certain times of the day, I will find you one when I've served these people. He did not seem to like us walking through and round the pub. My friend and I quickly exited as we are not being spoken to like that. Just be aware if you are ever in this pub wanting a meal and looking for a table. We will never go in this pub again being treated like this.
