Beautiful hotel and area!

Reviewed By Inspiration296853

We recently stayed at the Blake for our 10 year wedding anniversary. We thought it would be a nice stay, but it was even better than expected. My husband and o have traveled a fair amount and would consider this hotel to be one of the nicest we’ve stayed in - not necessarily the absolute fanciest, but the room was finished to the quality of a very nice home (thoughtful features, high quality appliances and spacious bathrooms). It was incredibly comfortable, clean, and well-appointee. I also appreciated that the front desk texted us to connect as soon as we arrived and we used text messaging throughout the weekend to request anything (such as our car from the valet). They were very quick to provide extra assistance, such as running to the garage to retrieve something we left in our car. They even sent up a bottle of champagne when they heard it was our anniversary! The resort has many restaurants and cafes right in the vicinity. And, the area is full of beautiful hikes and outdoor activities. We enjoyed going up to the Bavarian restaurant for a fun drink and alpine experience. The only two things that weren’t absolutely perfect were the speed of the streaming apps (we tried to watch a movie and it froze frequently), and that several hikes and things weren’t open because of the forest fires. Of course, the latter is completely out of the Blake’s control, but, still something to check on if that’s important to you.

More like 4.75 stars out of 5 but didn't want to low ball with a 4. Very helpful and accommodating staff. Shipped skis before our trip, staff accepted delivery of skis and moved them to our room before our arrival; suggested purchasing groceries in town instead of the village; booked onsite massages for us. Hotel is clean, housekeeping staff is quick and efficient. Had a king suite with a kitchenette... bedroom was separate from "living room" and we had a lovely fireplace, kitchenette was well stocked with utensils, too. Taking away .25 star due to the pillows and mattress. Our mattress had two very definitive dips where everybody, including ourselves slept so it was a bit difficult to get comfortable; if you're a flipper, your partner will feel every move you make and the pillows are so soft they are practically non-existent.

Amazing First Ski Experience for the Kids for Christmas 2021!

I can't express how much this trip was unforgettable for my kids first ski experience! I wanted it to be unforgettable and spent a lot of time planning it. Kent was amazing and offered tons of assistance in helping me plan an amazing holiday trip for my kids. It was beyond a 10 out of 10 experience!!! I didn't want a car and have to constantly haul my kids and family everywhere. We stayed in the perfect ski in/ski out resort next the views of the mountains and were able to ski right next to the hotel and store our skis' in the hotel. It was just amazing, convenience and allowed us to truly enjoy your time skiing within out dealing with tons of logistics. We did't wait on any lines at all and the local businesses were super kind and the ambience of the area was super chill and family friendly! Also, going to amazing trip during COVID wasn't ideal but I felt extremely safe being that the hotel and town are mandating masks which helped me feel safe for my family!

No Frills, but a Great Rate

Reviewed By Shelleeee

Honestly, this hotel could use some upgrades, but if they did that, we'd be paying double, so it's fine with me. We booked a 1 bedroom condo for 4 nights over Spring Break. With taxes and all, I think we were a little over $400 per night. Yea...that's getting up there in price, but for comparison sake, The Blake, which is a very nice resort was asking $800 per night before tax for a room with two beds in it. Just a standard 2 queen room. So, you get what you pay for, right? Well honestly I think you get much better than anticipated. I've stayed at many mountain properties and have been lucky enough to stay at a ski in and out property only a few times. This place is the closest I've ever been to a lift. It was beyond awesome. Especially traveling with Teenagers. They could come and go at will, and everyone could go back to the condo for meals and rest without it being any sort of trouble. The condos are independently owned, so maybe that has a lot to do with your accommodations. We had room 205, which was quiet, and in good shape for a ski condo as they can get beat to heck. Our 1 bedroom condo did not have a view, or balcony as it was on floor two. That would've been nice, but still for the price I cannot complain. The staff at the hotel are hit and miss. Some incredibly nice and helpful, some not so much. Another small complaint was that the pool and hot tub were also closed. We were told because of "COVID" which is probably complete crap. They're probably closed cause you don't have the staff to open them. Kind of getting annoyed with COVID getting blamed for everything these days. :) Anyway....like I said. Regardless of all the flaws, for the price you can't go wrong. And honestly, the place is just fine, and comfortable. I would absolutely stay here again.

Stay Away from Unit 102 and Turnkey Vacation Rentals

Reviewed By frankfromboston

I have visited Taos Ski Valley many times and stayed at Powderhorn on three prior occasions. I was very pleased with Powderhorn on my prior visits as it was clean, well supplied and well located. My visit in February 2022 could not have been more different. In my prior visits the building was managed by an on-site manager who handled the reservations. The on-site manager is gone and the reservations are handled through various rental companies engaged by the individual owners, which in my case was Turnkey vacation rentals. I can’t say whether my problems were caused by the unit owner or Turnkey, but in any event I will not be returning to Powderhorn. Overall the exterior and common areas are less well maintained than in the past and could use attention. The hot tub amenity is gone. My wife and I stayed for a week in Unit 102, a small first floor/basement one bedroom unit. The rental was more than $415/night all in and for that price I was expecting a decent place. The first problem we noticed was that when we arrived with many bags of groceries we were shocked to learn that the unit only had a dorm size refrigerator. This is a big problem because at the current time there are only two restaurants open in Taos Ski Valley, one of which is only open four days a week. Driving to Taos for dinner is not realistic as it is a 20 mile drive down a steep curvy mountain road. I reached out to Turnkey to express my dismay when we couldn’t fit the food we needed for our stay in the refrigerator and I was told that the pictures of the unit showed the refrigerator and “what you see is what you get.” We put the beer outside in the snow to make do. The second problem arose when my wife started sneezing like she does when she has an allergic reaction to dogs. I noticed that my clothes were covered with dog fur and the sofa was covered in fur. I responded to a cleanliness survey from Turnkey noting the dog fur and to their credit they reached out to me, but told me that it was a pet free unit. That may be the case, but there was a photo of the owner’s dog on the wall, a drawer full of various dog supplies and fur all over the coach. Turnkey offered to clean the unit, but with all of our stuff unpacked it was not realistic, so my wife stayed off the coach to minimize her sneezing, which is not ideal. Overall the cleanliness of the unit is not what you would expect. For example, the shower curtain was moldy, which is not Ok. The third problem was that the water just stopped running for half a day. I contacted Turnkey and they eventually got back to me and told me it was a building wide problem. Apparently to fix an issue in one unit, it was necessary to turn off water for the whole building. I understand that things happen, but it would have been nice to have prior notice, which I think would have occurred if the prior on site manager were still there. The final problem relates to the need to cook dinner as there are so few restaurants open. One night my wife put our dinner in the stove and after a half an hour the stove died. We had to throw out the dinner and have sandwiches. I contacted Turnkey and they were sympathetic and said they would fix the problem. Two days later we foolishly presumed that the stove had been fixed and tried to cook dinner again, with the same result, sandwiches for dinner. I contacted Turnkey again, which is done via text, and I received the same exact response, which led me to think it was automated or a least they had standard responses to everything. In any event, the stove was never fixed and we had to throw out two dinners. After several complaints, I received a text back from Turnkey that they would provide a $105 credit for my troubles, which seemed an odd amount. I would rather have had dinner. I love Taos Ski Valley and would visit again, but I would surely stay away from Powderhorn Unit 102 and any property managed by Turnkey.

Taos and the Bavarian are always amazing - but on a sunny day - and regardless the temperature (if the wind is low) - sitting out on the Bavarian deck eating huge warm pretzels and drinking wine or beer looking up at the amazing Kachina Peak - well, it doesn't get better than this folks. Great music (lots of Marley) and everyone is your friend. Special shout out to Alicia - her smile and welcome will warm you up on the coldest of days! Don't go near Taos without hitting the Bavarian. Cozy Warmth

Reviewed By Canyontrekker

I visited during the "off season", before the snows that bring skiers to Taos. Although on the main road to Taos resort, this little lodge is quiet and separated from the resort area by 1+ miles. Everything you need (kitchen/cooking/bath facilities), and some things you want (TV/movies), are here and clean. Comfortable cozy room with a nice effective heater. This lodge, along with the associated Village Suites at the main resort, would make a fine place for anyone to stay: solo folks like myself, couples, families, or those in a small group. The property manager who worked with me was very responsive and helpful, even after-hours. We are coming back!
