Beautiful hotel, stunning location, poor staff attitude
Reviewed By deeintheculdesacHaving spent five weeks travelling throughout Spain, and having experienced first class welcome and service at every establishment from the smallest roadside cafe, to five star hotels and restaurants, we were extremely disappointed by the "welcome" (or lack of!!) that we received when we arrived at the Gran Hotel. No eye contact from the male receptionist, a brusque, mumbled "hello", and even though my command of Spanish is far better than his of English, he insisted on trying to communicate in English. We were issued with key cards, absolutely no information given to us about facilities at hotel, eyebrow raising and pen tapping when I asked my husband which dining slots he'd prefer as they had to be pre-booked, and we even had to ask where the lift was - a pointed finger directed somewhere behind us and a sharply uttered "there" were all we got. Room was adequate - nothing special and no extras. Cheap toiletries and an expensive minibar. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent and the staff were fabulous. It was a really excellent experience and the food was wonderful - very, very highly recommended. Another redeeming factor was breakfast the following morning which I must admit was first-class, apart from the female member of staff who was very hostile and unhelpful and barked at me to get out of the way so she could adjust the coffee machine which had developed a fault. In mitigation, she was run ragged as she seemed to be doing everything on her own, but was joined half way through by a very friendly and helpful male colleague which was a blessing. If only they could train their staff that they'll never get the opportunity again to make the best first impression, I'd have given this establishment 5 stars and we'd love to return, BUT, we really don't want to risk being greeted as a nuisance rather than a welcome and valued guest.

Casona montanesa rehabilitada completamente en 2014, por fuera un edificio conservador, por dentro una explosion de modernismo. Tenemos 11 habitaciones dobles con bano privado y una suite con jacuzzi espectacular para relajarte o para dar esa sorpresa que tanto sonabas a tu pareja. Estamos rodeados de naturaleza, para algunos un punto negativo, para la gran mayoria es una maravilla poder salir a pasear entre montanas y sin bullicio, pero a la vez a escasos dos kilometros del centro de Puente Viesgo y sus bares y restaurantes.

A sweet woman checked us in, made us a big breakfast and basically did everything else around the place. She spoke very little English but with my limited Spanish we got along famously. (She always had a smile on her face.) Cute room with a nice lobby on the second floor. Trendy decor. We think we were the only guests. Super clean and bed was very comfy. Nice shower, weak WiFi. Great location for those interested in visiting the caves in the area. Good value for the money. We recommend this hotel.

Haven of peace
Reviewed By Silvia MIdeal place in the country to break away and relax. Through the window you will only see the mountain and the lovely cows. Go for a stroll along the river with the futuristic rock formations. Do not forget the breakfast, it is amazing.

Delightful hotel
Reviewed By johnfX1850LXI chose this hotel solely as a one night stopover while we visited the caves - El Monte Castillo. Had no expectations given how little they were charging. But it was easy to find, beautifully if simply furnished and decorated. A very comfortable night’s sleep. Lovely, welcoming staff. A lovely garden and terrace to eat out on (though sadly it rained the evening we were there). Very busy with locals. Given we were just passing through we decided to eat in, but then surprised to be told that separate from the al a carte menu, and the €18 menu del dia, there was a special menu for residents at just €12 - which we opted for, washed down with a bottle of Rueda vertijo for €7.50. Breakfast was simple but good, and included in our room fee. Our room at the front of the hotel had an attractive balcony, not available at the back. It did overlook the busy road but good double glazing held back most of the noise. The only downside was the lack of a carpark - you have to use the nearby public carpark. But I’d definitely stay here again - it’s only 20 mins from Santander and the ferry so an easy stopover, although the lovely spa village of Puente Viesgo has much to offer.

Very comfortable room
Reviewed By gary bPassing through to visit Las Cuevas on my bicycle tour. Very nice room. Walking distance from restaurants in the town. Very quiet location, was able to keep windows open all night. Stored bicycle in dining room.
