Last Visit to the Candlewood chain

Reviewed By MtBakerFarm

I am an IHG member and always try to stay at the Candlewood hotels. We made our yearly reservation at the Candlewood Portland airport a month ago and paid for a suite with two queen beds. When we arrived, we had been downgraded to a room with only one queen bed. On top of that, they insisted that my reservation was not refundable. After much discussion they agreed to cancel my reservation and we ended up staying at the Hampton Inn and Suites, which is a better hotel anyway. But I lost the good rate that i had secured by booking in advance. Needless to say, that is the last stay I will ever have at the IHG Chain and Candlewood in particular. I am very surprised that Candlewood would willingly let a long standing relationship go, but obviously they do not value that relationship.

Luxury and Comfort for Us and Our Doggie

Reviewed By jajwrite

Our room was beautifully appointed, spacious and very quiet, being located on the building's interior side. It felt like a home away from home, only more luxurious! We felt taken care of throughout our stay. Our dog, Ruby, was also treated so well, with special bowls, a bed, treats, and a toy. The shared areas are beautiful, with cool photography and artwork. We could even enjoy our coffee and bagels out front in the morning, or just sit outside at night. Parking was easy, too! We will definitely return to Hotel Lucia!

Friendly staff, great location, chilled ambiance

From the moment we got to the hotel, there was 17 of us, the staff was super friendly and willing to help. The rooms are nice and comfortable and the hotel is really nice. It’s close to several bus stops so getting to the convention center was not an issue at all - I could take several buses and the light rail. It’s close to the river in case you want to go for a run and there are restaurants galore around the area. Lots of parks around and very safe at night. They also have bike rentals and other equipment you can rent. Overall, a really great experience. Michael and Lela were awesome!

Nice hotel in a good location with a super helpful and friendly staff. The only minor faults are: * Coffee was AWFUL * We weren't informed at check in and the information in the rooms didn't explain the 24 hr rule for requesting housekeeping (we only saw that on the elevator AFTER we tried asking for same day service * Floor in hallway was messy for more than 24 hours (should've been vacuumed) * Toaster is too small and slow, creating a bottleneck during breakfast

Fixable Issues All Added Up

Reviewed By CBUSTRVLR93

The first thing to know about this hotel, is that there was recently water damage (I believe a pipe burst) which has meant that many amenities (sauna, hot tub, fitness center) are not currently available. The hotel was already making renovations, so I expect this to be a short-term issue. And while I understand why a hotel wouldn't want to advertise that many of its promised amenities are out of service to guests, it was highly disappointing to have to find out about this from an earlier TA review, not the hotel itself. It is their responsibility to inform guests of changes to the stay experience. Thankfully, Brandy at the front desk handled the situation on arrival. I appreciated her taking responsibility and offering constructive solutions. Brandy was a highlight of the staff. However, we continued to have small issues throughout the stay. The staff, beyond Brandy, was generally unfriendly and felt "checked-out." One member even bragged to us that he was leaving the hotel at the end of the week and didn't care about anything. Despite walking past the front desk every time, we returned to the hotel, we were never greeted. No "welcome back" or "How are you?" which was very odd considering how friendly Portland folks were (I often don't expect this type of interaction in more East-coast cities). Food and beverage options or lack of options, proved an issue for us. We ate at the rooftop restaurant on our first night. The food was really good, but was upstaged by pretty mediocre albeit nice, service. The bar was closed for the next two nights, one night for staffing issues, another for a private event. The real issue for us though was breakfast. Currently the hotel has no restaurant open for breakfast and instead has a cafe. This is fine and can be done really well (looking at you Sound Hotel in Seattle or Hilton Sedona at Bell Rock). Regrettably, the Portland Exchange (as the cafe is called) was almost entirely out of food two of the four mornings we were there. On the two mornings where they did have substantial food, they never had anything substantial for my lactose-intolerant husband (who wants a plain bagel?). It seemed crazy to us that in Portland this cafe was operating without any meaningful vegan option for breakfast. To add insult to injury, the breakfast burritos, which were the only hot breakfast item they had, when they were available, were $14! The F&B credit for diamond elites is $15, meaning that you cannot get a hot drink (starting at $2.50) and a breakfast burrito at this café. I will note, the burritos were good, but not $14 good. I mean they didn’t have truffle oil or anything fancy in them, they were just solid breakfast burritos. Now for some good. The rooms themselves are lovely. The bed was luxuriously comfortable and the hotel itself is clean and cute. Location is also good with easy connection to the MAX and streetcar systems. We were able to enjoy the pool most days and it was a solid pool. Overall, though, I’m giving this hotel four circles because every problem we had, is completely fixable. There wasn’t anything so wrong with this hotel that I wouldn’t recommend it and I would be willing to stay there in the future, assuming that the hotel is able to deal with the issues that were present this time around.

Looking for an inclusive hotel? DO NOT STAY HERE!

Reviewed By rebeccadX563VJ

This hotel discriminates. They are not an all inclusive hotel!!!! Upon checking in, we were questioned about our marriageable status. That was very off putting to say the least. It gets worst. We were assigned the worst room available. We know this because of the location of our room. Not only was it next to the elevators, the linen closet and staircase, IT WAS THE ROOM FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED! The room is right above the delivery bay. We were woken up at 6:AM to the barrage of truck deliveries. Either the reception clerk is very inept when it comes to understanding quiet getaway or they discriminate and passively aggressively make your stay VERY off putting and unpleasant. BTW we are very happily married and will be finding a more inclusive hotel for our future weekend city getaways.
