Mundo Milo is a small scale ecologically based lodge in Junquillal in the NW of Costa Rica only 300 meters from the Pacific coast with beautiful beaches where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.
That forest feel

The reality of the place and the warmth of the resident owners - Lieke and Michiel, far exceeded our expectations! From the moment of our arrival to our farewell hugs, we had the best experience. Our little African cabina was a delight. It really does feel like you are in the woods, especially when the howler monkeys woke us up before 5 am on our first morning! The wildness of the grounds enables that jungle feeling to remain everywhere on site. The swimming pool is surrounded by palm fronds and colourful flora and the birds dip past. Some of the hungrier birds hover at meal times and noisily make their presence felt! Rescued squirrels add to the forest feel. Lieke is a great chef and presides over the excellent menu. Michiel designs and builds the variously themed cabinas. We'd love to return and have already recommended Mundo Milo to others. Highly recommended - do not hesitate to book, you will not be disappointed, a truly special experience!

Reviewed By Brooke EWe booked a morning kayak up the estuary and it was an extraordinary tour full of natural history and phenomenal birds and quiet. Sylvia is incredibly knowledgeable and has poured her heart and decades of labor into the conservation of this place. Her English was impeccable and she was very encouraging in helping us practice our Spanish. If you love birds, peaceful waters and natural history, this tour comes highly recommended!

Reviewed By Mark DCame here for a few days at the end of a 3 place trip to Costa Rica. The place itself has a lovely location - on a hill some 200m from the beach which is home to a brilliant turtle hatchery. The garden is superb with lovely trees and plants around a beautiful pool. The rooms are very well put together. Most of the facilities work okay, since they are a bit old - like the sink takes some time to empty, the air conditioning is noisy (vibrates) and the hairdryer is not in its holder, but they are small things. The bed is very comfortable, air conditioner works and shower is wonderful. It is a long way from any shops so, you effectively need to breakfast there, but there are some other places to eat lunch and dinner nearby. The breakfast has good choice of set meals but is expensive with a minimum of $5, and most being $8-10 per person. Dinner is good quality food and there is similarly good choice, but you also pay for it with most starters around $10-14 and main dishes being $15-$20 plus beers @$3.50-4.50 for 33cl. and wine @$30+ per bottle except for house wine @$25. Our main meal came to $77 for 2. The cost of the room was around $93 per night. The garden and 5he pool are the highlights - and the birds to have breakfast with - hummingbirds just a few metres away - lovely!!!

The comfortable houses have room for 2-3 persons each and are fully equipped with a kitchen, hot shower, terrace, and internet. This very private and silent location has a tropical garden with a pool, an ocean view, and hammocks which invite you to relax and enjoy beach life. With luck, you will be able to see nesting Sea Turtles.

Reviewed By AGoodWanderOn the road to Junquillal Beach look for the sign on the right for Casas Pelicano; it mentions the cooking classes. Follow the dirt road parallel to the beach to reach Casas Pelicano. We were enthusiastically greeted by two dogs, followed closely by Sibylle Altenkirch, who provides cooking classes, meals to guests at the boutique hotel and local catering. Sibylle formally trained as a chef, and was a founding chef at Nil Restaurant, in Hamburg Germany. She has lived in Costa Rica since 1997. During that time, she has explored the local cuisine and practiced the true art of fusion cooking. She will tailor the menu for your likes and cooking interests, so it is best to plan a little in advance to give her time to shop. Bring your own drinks (we brought wine and seltzer water) to have with the meal, and while cooking if you wish. We started by sitting on the deck discussing some of the ingredients, especially the fruits and vegetables, that might not be familiar to those from northern climates. Then we got to cooking. I was especially happy to have Sibylle take the time to teach some simple techniques, like separating an egg and peeling ginger with the edge of a spoon. For more advanced chefs, she clearly could delve into deeper discussions about the combinations of ingredients and advanced techniques, but for a beginner like me she started where she could make the most difference, knife safety and building confidence. We prepared 7 dishes that we ate in a leisurely three courses. Between courses we returned to the kitchen to put finishing touches on the next course and plate the food. It was a relaxing several hours that felt like spending time with old friends. The view from Casas Pelicanos is striking. It was a perfect day to sit in the shade, listen to the crash of the waves and enjoy good food and good conversation. This activity would be great for older kids and anyone with an interest in delicious food.

Reviewed By meganvankaneganGary has truly made paradise for you here. You are steps away from a beach that is practically private for as far as your eye can see. The restaurants nearby within walking distance are owned by incredible people and you will never have a bad dish. Gary is accommodating and is truly a delight to have around. My husband and I may have been in love with this spot, but our 6 month old puppy was even more in heaven. Being so secluded, she could run off of her leash and be as free as can be. We will definitely be coming back as soon as possible.

They will give you very good tips and show you the best part of Costa Rica. The beach is just across the street and it is amazing, you will feel home.
