The Backyard Hotel is located on the beautiful, luscious green, central Pacific coast of Costa Rica in Playa Hermosa, just 4 kms south of Jaco Beach. This tropical paradise boasts one of the country's most well-known surfing and sunbathing beaches.
I stayed at the Backyard many times over the years and always had good experiences until now. I had to postpone my trip in January because my daughter got covid. I canceled my reservation within the time frame of their cancellation policy. They charged me for my room the day after I canceled. I asked for a refund and they denied it because when I emailed the hotel to cancel my reservation I didn’t ask to not be charged. Why would anyone want to be charged for a hotel stay they were not going to use? I contacted hotel. com where I made my reservation to argue on my behalf and this is the response of the manager at the Backyard. Hello Gina, This is about your Hotels.com booking from 03 Jan-05 Jan at The Backyard Hotel, Jaco. I have spoken to the manager at the hotel as requested and I am afraid that the refund has been denied by them as this was not requested before canceling the reservation. I tried requesting at least a partial refund but that was denied too. Thank You, Anand Upadhyay Hotels.com Customer Service Team I don’t usually do reviews but I feel there needs to be a consequence when businesses take your money after not honoring their owed policy.

We found the staff to be very friendly, the food to be excellent, and the whole place very clean and well kept (thanks Troy!). A special hello to Michelle, Tabitha, Yvette, and the whole staff who made us feel very comfortable. The downside... very hard mattresses.

A beautiful beachfront hotel located in one of the best surf destinations in Costa Rica. World-class surfing located right out your front door. Cabinas and suites available all include air conditioning, cable TV, hot water, kitchenettes, and a huge pool. Come stay with us at Hermosa Beach House in beautiful Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica.
Poor amenities, service and hotel. This hotel was not what we expected. Smelly, very small rooms, they give you only one towel, everything is old and worn out. They do not have any kind of services. I asked for additional pillows and they didn’t have any. Rooms smell musty/moldy, No WIFI !!! You can hear everything and they do not have a safe , and we didn’t feel safe at all to leave things in our room, hotel looks sketchy. We had cockroaches in our room, disgusting! Our reservation was for a Deluxe Double Room with Extra Bed, there was not such a thing, one tiny double bed, that’s it, and you can’t call luxury a room with cockroaches! I won’t recommend this place at all!

The best Vacation place to stay
A wonderful vacation with our in-laws and a teenager. The property was pristine, the suite was spacious and beautifully designed, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We loved the rooftop hot tub deck, and that it was a quick walk to restaurants, shops, and a great surfing beach. We will definitely be back!

For the greatest surfing in Costa Rica come to Cabinas las Arenas, on the beach at Playa Hermosa. Enjoy the best surfing beach in Costa Rica and surf the great waves only 50 yards from your room. Our affordable beachfront hotel, restaurant and surf shop are waiting for you. The hotel has 10 rooms all with their own private bathrooms. Each unit can easily accommodate up to 4 people. Waiting for you.
the location and price is great, right on the beach in Playa Hermosa, walking distance to Backyard bar and a quick 5 min drive to Jaco. However, the room was dirty, giant cockroaches were running around..the sheets were worn so thin they were almost see through. I d sleep with my flops on to kill the cockroaches. the whole building is termite infested. I had the "suite" which had a AC unit in it, but when we turned it on it would short out the electricity for the building and the owner would take his time to flick the breaker to turn it back on...if you could find him. I booked through expedia.com and paid an extra $ for the "suite" package, but after a few days, the owner approached me and told me I owed him more money because we had the suite. I told him it was between him and expedia...but he wasn't having it, so I let him charge my card extra just to shut him up. (overall he was nice about it, but he was obviously trying to pull one) I just call my CC and expedia when I got home and disputed the charges with no problems. If you can get a clean room this place would be great...I didn't shower in the room at all as it was pretty dirty..i just used the outdoor shower at the next door hotel (Cabinas las Arenas didn't work)

When you drive in you think that it is abandoned. It looks that bad. It is totally rundown. Completely unkept. But there was really loud metal music playing, so we knew someone was home. They offer a day pass for 3000 colones which is approximately $6 a person. You can use the bathrooms, the pool, and lay in one of the two hammocks tied to the palm trees on the beach. Fortunately for us nobody else was in The hammocks because they must have driven up to this dump and then turned around and driven away. But believe it or not we had a lovely afternoon, and the open air restaurant made us a delicious lunch shrimp fried rice and salad, and a refreshing fresh pineapple batida. So basically I'm glad we stayed. Caution, the black sand is extraordinarily hot, and the undertow is extremely strong. The sun is also wicked Strong so beware and take caution.
