A pleasant surprise! This place is definitely a cut above the rest! The Japanese styled room is beautiful with nice sea views to match. Outdoor onsen is good too but I must say I have experienced better ones. Hotels grounds is nice too. There was free flow of beverages in the late afternoon till evening. The provided dinner was very very delicious. Highly recommended for the ambience, good onsen, very good service and delicious food.

A recommended onsen ryokan if you are exploring Oga Peninsular in northern Akita.

I stayed at this hotel based on the recommendation of my travel agent who always impresses me on the selection of hotels. This ryokan is located on the entrance to Oga Onsen from the national road. The first thought upon arrival was that it was a traditional ryokan which I prefer to modernized buildings as far as onsen is concerned. Upon registration a staff member carried our luggage and showed us the room on the second floor. The tatami room was clean and spacious and had a good view of Oga Onsen village. We had the ryokan course menu for dinner mainly composed of local seafood. Particularly interesting was the ishiyaki. Burning hot stones are placed in the pots with soup bringing the pot to boiling point after which you stew the seafood. I understand it is a cooking originated among the fishermen. The onsen was very enjoyable. The outside (roten) onsen gives you a really outer feeling (although roofed ) but you need to walk down some stairs to get to the place. The staff were really friendly and ready to help us in any way. Overall we had a pleasant stay. A recommended onsen ryokan if you are exploring Oga Peninsular in northern Akita.

A disappointment.

We arrived before the checkin time of three o'clock. The place was deserted and the staff were steadfast that we would not be checked in until three. In a big hotel like this it is a nonsense that a room cannot be made ready in a reasonable time. Our room, a twin non smoking in the main block was lovely. Spacious newly refurbished. The huge disappointment was the Kaiseke evening meal. In a place like this surrounded by the fishing industry, the meal was a mean ordinary event. I say this because the price you pay for this experience is far from ordinary and the expectation of fresh seafood was completely let down. The onsen pools are OK. Nothing special. Iv'e stayed in a few now and always have a taste of the water to assess the minerals. This seems like heated fresh water, clear and tasteless - and no feeling on your skin. Would I come back, no never. There are way better onsen half board experiences in Japan than this one.

Surroundings Desperately Need Care

When we first arrived, we were sure that we were not at the right place. The name of the hotel was only written in Japanese characters, which we cannot read, the front yard was sorely neglected, and there was nobody there to greet us. After asking at the aquarium close by, we realized that this building was our hotel. When we arrived a second time, the greeting was very friendly, a young man immediately took our luggage and showed us our rooms, each with a spectacular view of the bay. Service during the whole stay was extremely good, except for one surprising exception. The rice of the day was a mixture of white rice with oysters, which we did not like. We asked for plain white rice, which was brought to us instantaneously. To our surprise, however, the lady who brought the rice explained that we would have to pay 100 yen each for a bowl of rice. The food was only passable, better the first day than on the second. We got the impression that the cook did not want to serve the same dishes to us as the day before. His idea was to serve us some kind of Western fusion with lots of catsup and other strange, not originally Japanese dishes. The sunsets are out of this world!
