The best available hotels & places to stay near Newcastle upon Tyne

August 6, 2022 Diedre Savory

Once a shipbuilding city, Newcastle's flashier claim to fame is nightlife. Throw in a heap of premium restaurants serving foods from all over the world and it's no wonder young partiers choose to blow their hard-earned (or not-so-hard-earned) cash in Newcastle. While these amenities are certainly a draw for the hipsters and culture-seekers, it's the locals that make Newcastle a truly special place to visit. "Geordies," as they are often called, embody the pride, industriousness and resilient spirit of their city.

A great experience all in all. The single best thing being the staff team; all of whom are so welcoming and helpful. The rooms are quite generous and well laid out. A big shout out to Nathan at the bar who provided some useful advice about the wine and spirits available at the bar.

Malmaison Newcastle

Fog on the Tyne? Let's hope not. Otherwise you'll miss the great view of the Tyne Bridge you get from our hotel in Newcastle city centre. But then, when you're staying at Malmaison Newcastle, it's the views on the inside that tell you your boat's come in. While you're right at the heart of Newcastle's great shops and exciting nightlife, the lure of MALBAR's legendary cocktails and the Mal Brasserie's classic dishes with a twist is pretty strong. And who wants to spend all night out on the town when one hotel in Newcastle has a whole floor with a shipbuilding theme and bathtubs you could sink a battleship in? It could only be the Newcastle Mal.

Fantastic bar!

Best stay in Newcastle, pure luxury

Reviewed By LoloBoo

This is our favourite place to stay in Newcastle! We stayed in a Townhouse suite with fabulous views of the river and a free minibar of local snacks and beverages to enjoy. Super comfy, super clean, every detail was thought of and welcome messages left for us throughout the room. Black out curtains throughout and such a lovely big bed. We had arrived early but the hotel took our luggage which we collected on check in. We had actually booked for January but our son got a sickness bug. We contacted the hotel who moved our booking despite it being non-transferable. So appreciated from two tired parents just trying to get some alone time and they really just went above and beyond for us. All the staff were lovely and friendly and we loved chatting to them during our stay. I’d live here if I could! Cannot be beaten and will be back as soon as we can convince the grandparents to babysit for the weekend again ?

Great experience, will book again

I only stayed at Hotel d u Vin for one night but the impression that I was left with was superb. It was effortlessly top-class in every way, especially the customer service. I spoke mostly to Rachel who made the check-in and out experience comfortable, professional, swift and friendly. But while Rachel was the main member of staff I dealt with, it must be said that all staff members I encountered just in passing made the effort to acknowledge me in a truly genuine, warm manner and it really did make a huge difference to how I felt, so thank you for that. It's hard to describe how this hotel is both luxurious and understated at the same time... I wouldn't hesitate to book again. It's the perfect balance of feeling comfy and relaxed but like a real VIP at the same time.

Exceptional visit but few concerns

Reviewed By 570averyb

I stayed in the hotel with my partner and two children, upon check in Alex, the reception manager, ensured that our check in was perfect and we were shown where everything was in the hotel. She is a real asset to the hotel! Room was clean. However, shower could have been cleaned more as I had to clean it myself. Dined in the Gin Bar where my children enjoyed eating off their adults menu, amazing options and they loved it! Was served by Keira and Leah who showed us true hospitality service, creating conversations with us about what we were doing during our stay, giving the children the prettiest mock tails and me and my partner one of their new in gins with their flavoured tonic tap. When a man approached through the bar area with tattoos on his hand he wasn’t very polite to the bar staff at all. Now no staff should be treated this way, he just stood at the end of the bar on his phone telling them to clean the bar. I asked to speak to the bar manager at reception but was told he was not on shift that day. I hope the girls realise they done an amazing job providing us with the best service. We enjoyed our stay at your hotel and will be back in the summer! Thank you to all of the staff who helped us throughout our stay. We will see you all soon.

Great stay

Reviewed By D1962GHliams

Had a great stay, was a lovely hotel But at 4am Saturday morning after a heavy session, I was rudely awaken whilst tucked up in bed by an enraged Irishman, who was seemingly Randy and flatulent, wearing nothing but a t-shirt, potentially sliders, covered in faeces. This shocked me in my drunken and fatigued state. Once I had opened the door he proceeded to stroll in my room (Connor mcgregor esque) and jumped straight in my bed, leaving an amber turd. I was furiously trying to get him to finish and leave, but unfortunately he required (in his words) “10 more minutes mate” Staff reacted absolutely brilliantly and they cleaned my sheets and bleached my room. All without waking my partner up. Loved it, Frankie Turdpin

The Vermont Hotel

Few hotels can boast a more enviable city centre postcode than the Vermont Hotel, for this imposing structure is located in the heart of the City of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, not only next to the Castle Keep and opposite the historic Moot Hall, but also just two minutes from Newcastle's Central Station. Combining old character in the form of 1930s grandeur with contemporary elegance and four-star luxury, the landmark building is your base from which to discover the many bars, shops and attractions of the town centre and wider area. Look outside your window and you might see such sights as the River Tyne, Millennium Bridge or stunning cathedral, and it's not the only mark of the sheer inspiration of the Vermont Hotel experience. That's because the reasons for the hotel's reputation become clear with a stay in any one of its sophisticated bedrooms, which are finished in soft relaxing colours while also coming with a wealth of facilities for your pleasure and comfort, including - among others - private en-suite bathrooms, a mini bar and free Internet access.

Save your money and go to the Premier Inn

The Vermont looks good but doesn't deliver. From the miserable consierce, who couldn't smile, let alone help you with your bags, to the bar staff who didn't seem to realise they should take orders for drinks, it was very dissapointing. We were overcharged for afternoon tea but didn't realise until later, and as we were not given a bill we couldn't raise the issue as we couldn't prove later on what we had or hadn't ordered. Each night we stayed there was a wedding party which meant that there were lots of guests for breakfast the following morning. The hotel simply couldn't cope. The receptionist referred to it as "an absolute nightmare". I would have thought a full hotel was a dream come true! We decided to splash out on this hotel, but it really wasn't worth it. The service is far better in a Premier Inn. I have contacted the hotel but most of my issues were not addressed in their reply. i was offered a free afternoon tea and a rround of drinks, but as we live 300 miles away, it wasn't much good!

Just OK

Reviewed By jamesebba

Myself and my girlfriend stayed here for two nights over the jubilee bank holiday. The room was okay however, as I’ve seen in other reviews, it was very noisy. Had it not been for us being pretty sleep deprived from having our first child, I doubt we would have slept. The windows are very poor and to even access them, the internal sliding glass doors were so stiff to the extent I had to yank it open with two hands. The second evening my girlfriend ran a bath before heading out for a meal, to then discover it had emptied itself due to a faulty plug. We tried to contact the reception desk through the rooms phone to find that there was no dial tone and the thing didn’t even work. We were told that they would send the handy man up to fix it, but he is very busy, so it would just be whenever he can. The biggest complaint we had was on the morning of the last day we stayed. We headed back from breakfast at about 10:05am to find the hotel maid had began cleaning our room. I tried to explain that we would be checking out within the next hour, so we could gather our things together and pack. However she didn’t speak one word of English. The only reply we got was that she didn’t speak any English and carried on cleaning our bathroom. We had to hastily pack up our belongings trying to ensure we hadn’t forgotten anything, all the while the hotel maid is cleaning out our bathroom. We felt very unimportant and rushed out so they could get the next guest into the room. We did make a complaint at the reception on checking out and was told, that shouldn’t have happened and the message would be passed on to the cleaning staff. Won’t be staying here again, far better service and room from the Holiday Inn Newcastle.
