Thirteen hundred years ago, Nara (then Heiju-kyu) was the imperial capital of Japan. "Old Japan" is still easy to spot here, from Great Buddha Hall to traditional ryokans and the serene Isuien garden. Travelers rave about walking tours of Nara, particularly in the historic Naramachi merchant area.

We took advantage of the "Go to Travel" campaign and we stayed here one night. We were very happy with our choice. COVID Protocol: Temperature check at check-in. All common area buttons are covered with antiviral stickers. Hallways are being monitored by disinfecting robots (I kid you not). Our room had a sticker that noted no one stayed in this room for at least 3 days. Location: Above JR Nara Station. While this may seem to be very central, in actuality, most of the tourist sites are closer to Kintesu Nara Station. That being said, it is still only a 15-minute walk to most of the areas that are worth visiting. Room: Quite dated. This is not a complaint but more an observation. Everything was clean, well-stocked, the bed was really comfortable. It was very quiet - while not sure if it was quiet because of a lack of guests or because of the room, this night we stayed here, it was incredibly quiet. We loved it. This is not a luxury hotel but a business hotel plus. Service: It was good. English was not prevalent but it was not an obstacle for us. Would we stay here again? Maybe. We now realize that we probably want to be closer to the nightlife but that is not anything against this property.

This is absolutely one of the best hotel to stay in Nara. The staffs were friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was delicious. The location was pretty strategic and near to the tourist attraction spots. The room I had was clean and spacious enough only for two people. The best thing about this hotel is the hot spring. Absolutely soothing and clean. 10/10 would stay there again!

We had a very pleasant stay here recently for 2 nights. The hotel is not expensive and is just a 5 minute walk from JR Nara Station and is also close to cafe's, etc. The rooms are small but cleverly designed, are highly functional and everything works properly. The staff spoke English and were very helpful, we felt very comfortable here.

Hotel has really a lot of rooms, situated 10 minutes drive from Nara Park (where all the visits happen). They also provide a free shuttle if you don't drive. Staff is very nice and helpful. Rooms are a bit small (in line with what you usually find in Japan), but very clean and neat. There is a huge car park attached with the hotel (500 yen per day) which makes it very convenient.

Mikasa is actually a part of a Miyako Hotels & Resorts chain, thus one can expect a certain level of standard here. The standard room that we booked for has a somewhat angled view of the city. You will have to pay more for a room with a direct view. The room size was moderate. The dinner service was very nice and in line with other ryokans that we have stayed in the past. For breakfast, I think that the Japanese breakfast was the only option. However, everything was tasty and of high-quality. The portion of breakfast was adequate but not filling unlike other buffet-style breakfast at typical hotels. Although the onsen was not natural mineral water, the facility was clean and has every amenity that one would need including facial cleanser, lotion, and Q-tips. We didn't need to bring a towel from the room since that was also provided on-site. The only downside was that the outdoor bath has no view whatsoever. The shuttle service was efficient and punctual. They have an office next to Kintetsu-Nara station Exit No. 5. At the end of our stay, the staff was kind enough to transport our baggage to Heijo which is nearby. People who are looking at ryokans on Mt. Wakakusa in Nara would likely be comparing this property with Heijo next door, so here we go. - Room: Heijo At Heijo, even a standard room has a very good view of Nara and it was much more spacious with a full-size window. The room also has other nice features like electric curtains and feet-warmers. - Onsen: Mikasa The hot baths at both places were not from natural spring. Nonetheless, Mikasa did provide better facilities & amenities. - Food: Mikasa Dinners were comparable at both places, but breakfast at Mikasa was more substantial. - Staff and service: Tie The staff at both properties are courteous and helpful. Although Heijo seemed to be a bit understaffed. - Location: Mikasa Mikasa's office next to Kintetsu-Nara station was very handy. We knew exactly where to catch the bus, and we could leave our baggage there. Not so easy for Heijo. With that said, Mikasa's rate was higher at the time of our booking.

Mountain Home Lodge in Deer Park is part of The hostel Deer Park Inn. We found this lovely place on booking.com and was not regretted. It is located in Nara park surrounded by deers. I traveled by car which was very convenient since it’s a bit long walk from the city and very dark at night. Parking need to be reserved in advance ¥1000/day. Our room was nice and cozy, fully equipped kitchen, comfy double bed and plenty of space for kid. Absolutely recommend this place if you travel by car and with kids. Not so far from all famous attractions. Love this place and definitely come back again.

I really loved our stay here - we were after a more traditional Japanese style stay during our trip and this did not disappoint. We elected to have a kaseki style dinner and japanese breakfast and loved it. The staff were very friendly and attentive as well. I enjoyed the public baths while my partner enjoyed the private bath on our balcony. We elected for a larger room and it was incredibly spacious! the largest room by far during our two week trip in Japan. The hotel also organised a free english tour with the nara guides who are volunteers.
