Fringing two sandy bays separated by a rock island reachable at low tide, Mirissa feels hidden away compared to Sri Lanka’s other busier resort towns. While the quiet sands are sprinkled with bars and surf rentals, it’s Mirissa’s May-to-November whale-watching boat trips that steal the show.

The Spice House, Mirissa is a beautiful Colonial style guesthouse with its own private swimming pool set in a peaceful, landscaped garden full of tropical flowers, fruits, spices, ponds & hammocks. It is ideally situated only one minute from a beautiful, reef protected bay & 1km from the main bustle of Mirissa beach. The guesthouse is English owned by an experienced traveller and his Sri Lankan Wife which allows us to offer our guests the perfect mix of Western comfort & luxury alongside Sri Lankan charm & service - we like our guests to feel like part of the family. The house is shaded by coconut palms & cinnamon trees to the front while the back is terraced which allows wonderful views over the surrounding jungle. Local wildlife is often seen in our garden with daily visits from monkeys, kingfishers, peacocks, woodpeckers & squirrels. We can also help with Airport transfers & booking whale watching trips during the season (November - April).
Overall we had a nice stay at the Spice House. On arrival our bags were taken to our rooms for us. The house is set in a beautiful jungle area with amazing pools just off the main road of Marissa - the main beach is roughly a 10 minute or less walk. One thing that I would make people aware of is that the Spice House is made up of multiple properties spanning across a few areas of land. This wasn’t a major issue but I thought worth mentioning that you might not be staying at the main house if you book here. We stayed in the ginger room which was lovely and one of the more recent builds on the property. The house was accessible via a back road which was helpful (however coming back in the evening at night there were a number of stray dogs which were fine but a little unnerving for my girlfriend - these dogs are also found across most of Sri Lanka and are almost all of the time calm). The room was great, location was excellent (not to close / not too far) and the breakfasts and hospitality were also really positive.

Best location to stay in Mirissa - you cross the road and reach Turtle Bay - a more private and chilled out beach than the main Mirissa beach. Also a shorter walk to coconut hill than from central Mirissa. The guest house itself was charming - we received a very warm welcome by this family-run place. Breakfast was home-made and generous; lots of fruit, toast, eggs, yoghurt. Even though we stayed in the simplest room, we had a balcony and although small, it was quite comfortable. If we came again, we'd probably opt for one of the bigger rooms which is more what you see in pictures (also closer to the pool, in a different building). AC and fan worked great.

The hotel is located one minute walk to the sea, in a very good position. It is a very large building with generous space close to everything. What I liked was the cleanliness and hospitality. The rooms are large, very clean and nothing is missing. They have a refrigerator, a kettle and even a safe. Bath towels are provided, as well as beach towels. in the bathroom there is a hair dryer, liquid soap and shampoo at your discretion. The water is hot. The air conditioning works well. For the price paid, I was expecting something of poor quality, but I was pleasantly surprised. I stayed in more expensive hotels and did not have this comfort. Congratulations to the owners. I gladly recommend and will be back for sure

We were moved to this hotel from our booking at Handagedara resort, which was suffering from maintenance problems . (We wondered if if were moved to one of the more delapitaded rooms becaisw of this) I will start by saying that the location is superb and if this is important to you, then the rest shouldn't affect you as much, but if you want a 3/4* hotel standard then there is vast areas for improvement necessary. I must also thank the female member of staff for being very kind, and for us allowing us to shelter a puppy that we rescued from the beach. However... Breakfast was very average. Our bathroom had watermarks all over the taps and surfaces. The walls in the room were either damp or were fading and peeling in almost every corner. The main shower was cold and the secondary shower (was hot in fairness) had a mind of its own, meaning it would flick up and cover the room (towels, clothes, toiletries) in water. I don't think this is a bad hotel but it could and should be better in a few too many areas.

Set on the Southern coastline of Sri Lanka just a few minutes along the coastal highway from spectacular Mirissa Beach, and within easy reach of Galle or Matara, Villa Atulya offers an idyllic holiday experience. Set in ocean front, this is a home away from home with all required luxury where you can enjoy your holiday without the hustle and bustle of a commercially run hotel. The Villa was designed by the leading Sri Lankan architect, Mr C Anjalendran,a protege of Geoffrey Bawa. There are five spacious bedrooms with attached bathrooms. All bedrooms are air conditioned and offer spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. The antique furniture and paintings carefully chosen by the architect adds a touch of opulence of a bygone era to the Villa and its open verandas facing the ocean. When you are at the Villa all you will hear is the hypnotic sound of the Indian Ocean rolling on to the reef in front which makes this a special place to unwind and reconnect with simpler things in life. The Villa has its own swimming pool and staff ( Manager, Housekeeper and Chef) who will happily attend to your every need.At Villa Atulya you can enjoy the finest home cooked Sri Lankan meals as well as a variety of Western dishes prepared to suit your palate by our Resident Chef.If you prefer to buy fresh fish and vegetables from the market, our staff will prepare meals according to your taste at no extra cost. Alternatively, they can purchase the ingredients as requested by you and the only extra charge will be for transport. Villa Atulya is highly recommended for discerning travelers who can appreciate simple things in life in absolute luxury. Especially recommended for honeymooners.Alcoholic beverages can be brought by the guests and consumed at the Villa at no extra charge. There is free Wi-Fi available at the Villa.
We had a great stay at Villa Atulya with extended family. We booked both villas (5 rooms each) & each with their own pool. There’s large garden spaces in both so it’s great for kids or a friendly game of cricket. The villa manager Ranga & his team ensured everyone was comfortable. The food was really good and everyone enjoyed their stay. The sea front right outside the villa is rocky so be sure to pack water shoes or sandals. Having said that, there’s lot of marine life visible in the naturally formed tide pools. To the right of the villa is a small natural pool / Bay Area that is great to chill in (and also for varieties of fish). Further down to the right there are pretty big waves but it’s not suitable for body boarding because of the rocks. I’d really recommend Villa Atulya for a group vacation.
