Relaxing Forest Weekend

Reviewed By The_McDubs

We booked a very inexpensive package for the weekend that included a room for three nights, half-board, local bus tickets, and tickets for the nearby treetop walk. I believe it also included bowling, but we didn't manage to fit it in :) The hotel is not in the most scenic town, but the mountains surrounding it are lovely. Don't be put off by the view from the street. It is quite safe and the parking across the street is convenient. All the staff were very kind and most spoke excellent English. The lady at reception was helpful in planning our excursions. The room was not fancy and the furnishings are outdated, but it was clean and efficient. The first night we came back from dinner to find some very delicious chocolates on our pillows! That was a nice touch of hospitality. Breakfast is a simple German buffet of meats, rolls, preserves, cheeses, eggs, vegetables, cereal, juices, etc. The half-board options for dinner were varied and you get a soup, main course, salad buffet and I seem to remember some small desserts. The food is very basic and I would stick to the traditional German offerings to avoid surprises. You choose your evening meal at breakfast on a little menu card so when you come in from hiking at the end of the day you don't even have to think about anything. The upstairs patio is nice for relaxing in the afternoons and you may order drinks there. They have a selection of books to borrow, but I could only find one in English. The Baumwipfelpfad (hope I spelled that right) is advertised as the longest treetop walk. It is really a pleasant stroll along a wooden bridge that winds up a giant egg-like structure very high until you are looking out over the most majestic views of the Bavarian forest. It is easily reached from the Hotel Gross. We also drove to Passau one day and it was not very far. In the basement of the hotel is a witch museum dedicated to local women who were persecuted for using local herbs for medicinal purposes and you may visit it free. Really it is just a room with some things to read and some props. There is a video playing and you are supposed to be able to change the language, but we could not figure out how. We had a snack in the biergarten one of the afternoons and it was very nice and shady. I thought the Hotel Gross was a lovely and simple little place with good value if you would like to spend a relaxing weekend walking in the forest, having drinks in the garden, seeing the view from the treetops, or visiting other area attractions such as Passau or the Wild West themed Pullman City park.

Nice location, crappy service & not available spa options

Reviewed By 471mellim

Pros:nice location, good breakfast Cons: from advertised spa options only pool and sauna were open (only 1 family allowed at sauna, for over >500 rooms!) and no massages available on Sundays (which does not make sense for a hotel offering weekend getaways) - no such information provided anywhere beforehand; service at bar / restaurant was horrible: 1 hour waiting time for drinks, ordered salads were not served within a 2h time frame so we left and ordered pizza externally; booked 2 same rooms and 1 was a lower category, when addressed to receptionist it was confirmed and lower rate was paid (not sure it would have been noticed without our asking); no female hygiene bin at the hotel room; also no phone in the room and when calling the reception from mobile phone, it took ages to get an answer, if anyone answered at all

Nice place for a weekend....

Reviewed By Bhargav M

My Wife surprised me with a weekend away to this facilities. She got a cheap offer for a 2 nights-3days stay including breakfast and dinner for two. The location/area around this hotel is very famous for rehabilitation for aged and/or physically disabled people. Also, there are many Golf course both full size and mini golf. Having said this, this area is filled with hotels and vacation apartments. The drive to Bad Griesbach is very pleasant, specially during summer time. As you arrived you will find yourself at a big round about and arrows pointing in every direction for different hotels and apartments. for Fürstenhof Quellness- und Golfhotel, you need to drive out of this round about ( not directly going to the basement garage) and drive past the bus stand. just before you think that you are leading to a wrong place, you will see direction to basement parking for at least 10 hotels, and one of them is Fürstenhof Quellness- und Golfhotel. Follow the yellow line to get to the correct parking basement. Its not hard to find correct parking as it sounds. As soon as we step in it was clear that these place is well past its prime, and wants the 80ties back. The lift was broken so we took steps with our luggage, but still there was a button to press and call help if needed. The dim-lighted hallway and staircase took us to the well-lit and grand reception. check-in was easy, fast and efficient with all needed information given right away. Well-come to Germany. We were allocated Room 327 with a quick apology for broken lift, and direction to other functioning lift. The Room and hotel was clean and neat. Bathroom relatively new/renovated, free wifi, cable TV, mini bar and a locker very slimier setup to many other hotels. the view from room balcony was to the pool, and over looking the valley, a nice view. The food on both nights was, lets say not exceptional but also above average. with good selection of wine and beers. same was for the breakfast. there was always plenty to choose from, and many options available. the pool / Therme area was nicely done, clean and with enough towels and a pool bar. there is a solarium and sauna area and enough sun beds that even Germans do not need the feel to reserve them. :) water, tea and apples were to grab for free at the Sauna station. We hung out at the pool side all 3 days, going to the pool for a dip, 135cm deep, and to the indoor/outdoor Jacuzzi. very relaxing, peaceful and slow times. the only drawback was that at the pool side there was no wifi reception, which was very good in the room. The average age of the guests was i guess around 70, but there were some young couples, and one or two families with kids. The staff was friendly, always ready to help. I do not say that it was the best stay, but for a weekend stress-buster this place was perfect. the price we paid via this offer, was a good value for money.

Attention to detail!

Reviewed By Liekz

We stayed unfortunately only one night in this beautiful hotel, but were very impressed. The attention to detail in the decoration, food, wellness and hospitality overall was truly amazing. From the huge hydrangeas at the entrance, to the fluffy bathrobe’s, to the resting area at the wellness, this hotel manages to surprise you pleasantly in all its little hooks and corners. The wellness was one of the best I have ever been to, choice of sauna’s, Turkish baths and plenty of relax rooms and even a bare foot experience outdoors. The COVID 19 measures seemed very consistently applied, although it remains awkward to sit in a dining room with a mouth mask. The food was tasteful and plenty, the room very nice. Warmly recommended.

Wonderful Small Hotel!

My husband and I were here for only one night and wished our stay was longer! We were warmly greeted when we arrived. And the receptionist prepared a delicious plate of ham, cheeses, bread and fruits for us. Our room was really spacious with a comfortable seating area separate from the sleeping area. The bed was wonderful! As was the shower. It’s in a perfect location for exploring Passau and for walking to restaurants. Highly recommend this lovely hotel!

Art Hotel & Hostel

Welcome! Good that you managed to find your way to art hotel & hostel. Our house is located in a historic building in the center of Passau. Once you step out the door, you are already in the pedestrian area of the town with plenty cafes and restaurants. The St. Stephan Cathedral and the rivers Inn and Donau are only a few minutes walk from our hotel. Furthermore, a part of the ancient roman wall belongs to our property which you can visit during your stay. The hotel is located in the Kantnerhaus which was once build by an merchant family from Passau. The whole building was renovated in Summer 2014. With a great deal of effort, we tried to keep the ancient charm and combined it with modern comfort. In order to keep the ancient and historic atmosphere, we do have to make little concessions in terms of comfort. Therefore we cannot offer you a lift in hotel. The unique charm of the old wooden stairs will hopefully be some kind of replacement.

A likeable hotel

Reviewed By Karlkoreander

This presumably family run hotel is quite likeable. It is convently located just on the other side of the bridge to the old town. It functions, and the managers have their prorities right. I had to laugh when I entered the room: I am sure it has been designed by the same person that did the layout for InterRegio trains of the 1990ies: It looks funnily outdated. But this rather adds to the charm than that it takes anything away. I recommend this place.
