Considering the options in Minakuchi, this is probably the newest and largest hotel in the area. This is a business hotel, not a full service nor a luxury anything but it does provide an acceptable size rooms in a new, clean environment. It has a couple of unique peculiarities. first is the public bath on the ground floor. Free access for guests. Separated male / female, no family baths available. Second unique arrangement is the parking. There is the main parking area and the second parking area which is a few meters away but you need to go through to the back of the property, out of the hotel property, drive on a farm access lane to get to the second lot. There is lots of parking but the secondary parking lot is far enough away that during a rain storm, you will have second thoughts about how to get to the entrance of the hotel. There is no "view". You either see rice fields or the highway. The room was average Japanese style. It is still fairly small but not crazy small. Beds were comfortable enough. It is very quiet and the AC works fine. We were satisfied. The breakfast is standard Japanese fare however I will give kudos to these folks because they change the menu daily. The have eggs (each day it was done differently), a fried meat (bacon, ham) rice, miso soup, salad, fresh breads etc. Can't complain nor can I praise. It was decent enough. Been at a few of the MInakchi area hotels, while location is a little out it isn't a bad option for the area.

It's been a couple of years since we stayed here last. A few observations: 1. The lobby no longer has the Tanuki homage nor the aquarium. The space is now used as a meeting point for charter bus visitors. This is a VAST improvement since a couple of years ago. 2. We got the same room as a couple of years ago. We were mildly pleased that the carpet was replaced, the walls were redone. The general feel of the room was significantly improved. It is still lipstick on a pig because the walls are still very thin and we can here people moving around in the hallway. The wifi in the room is better than two years ago. We can directly use the WiFi to stream Netflix. The breakfast is not great. A buffet made without care is how one person described it. It put some food in the stomach and that was about it. The meatball spaghetti at 6:30 am or the Japanese curry. Hmm, just weird. We considered skipping breakfast but there were little other options nearby. There is a huge sign in the parking lot advertising their plans to build a new annex. Which is something to look forward to however since two years ago, the area as introduced a couple more new business hotels so there is more competition. It is still one of the few options in the neighborhood. Its still dated but not a bad option if you are staying in the area.

We've stayed at this hidden gem many times. It's on the grounds of the Tarao Country Club. Complimentary transportation is provided from the Iga Ueno train station. You can stay in the main building, or there are very charming log cabins overlooking their par 3 golf course. Staff are super friendly and helpful. The evening food is amazing. Dinner alternates between Japanese and French. In the morning there's a nice breakfast buffet. The onsen facilities are well maintained with a rotenburo that overlooks the lake. We keep going back because Hotel Lake Villa never disappoints as a truly relaxing getaway.

The hotel is a basic Japanese Inn with large clean rooms with views coveniently located between the Yakebitaiyama & Okushigakogen and Ichinose & Terakoya Ski areas. Other areas beyond Terakoya can also be accessed on skis as far as the Sunvalley. Alternatively shuttle buses to other ski areas can be caught from the bus stop in front of the hotel, Snow Monkey express bus also departs from there. The reception sells discounted lift passes and tickets for the express Snow Monkey bus for Y1,000 return per person, they also have bus timetables. Western pillows (there are only Japanese buckwheat pillows in the rooms), hair dryers and cotton kimonos (yukatas) can also be found at reception. Beer, wine, snacks, and frozen meals can be purchased at the hotel, reception can microwave. The hotel has a sauna and a public onsen, free wifi is available in the shared lounge and resraurant only, there are coin operated old washing machines and dryers on the 4th and the 5th floors. Check both for cleanliness. Our dryer took 3 hours to dry our quick drying clothes which was rather expensive, the reception kindly refunded 2h worth after we'd complained. Note that guests must pay their bill in cash & the nearest ATM is a 20 mnute bus trip each way. Buffet breakfast is included, it is served 7:30-8:30, both western and Japanese dishes are offered, but there are only 2 alternating menus, slightly different from each other, so it becomes rather repetitive. The most cost effective option for dinner is to choose half board at the hotel. However if you are staying longer than 2 nights, it becomes repetitive, similar to the breakfast. To make it worse, the dining room and the shared lounge area are not heated, so they are freezing cold. It is much more exciting, warmer and more cosy to dine at the izakaya next door to the right, or the pub, if you prefer pub food, next door to the left. There are a few more dining options in the Ichinose village, 10 min walk away. Drying room downstairs is not heated either, so the boots do not really get dry there. The rooms, by contrast, get too hot and the temperature cannot be easily adjusted, as the windows cannot be left open during the day due to the risk of monkeys getting inside, and freezing at night. All hotel staff are very nice and helpful and have enough English to communicate. All up, an enjoyable stay. The freezing temperature in the dining room and the menu issues can be overcome by dining elsewhere. If too hot, open the widow during the day while you are in the room, and take your boots to your room to dry if you need to. Allow a lot of time and money for the dryer. Because of these issues I feel I can only rate it 3.
