The hotel is supposed to be attached to the station but the confusing signage created a very tortuous journey. This is a typical business hotel - clean, small rooms. Breakfast was included and the fare was perfectly acceptable for the price. Staff were pleasant and helpful. I arrived late evening and the room issued was very noisy as it faces the tracks. As the hotel was full, they managed to find an ‘emergency room’ , located facing the street just above reception. It was definitely quieter and I had a good nights sleep. Kitakami is a sleepy town and as it turned out, there was a heavy blizzard so the Main Street was very quiet. The reason for overnighting here was to visit the Minchinoku Folk Village but I had to abandon the trip due to the heavy blizzard the next morning. Even the train to Morioka was affected.

Pros - Good value for the tasty breakfast and the waitstaff are very helpful; Non-front desk personnel are solicitous Cons - Filthy carpeting and walls throughout the hotel and in the rooms (stains, dust bunnies, lint, etc.); Cigarette smoke permeates all of the lower floors (up to 9), because smoking is still allowed on the 6th floor, on large parts of the lobby floor and in many of the conference/large rooms; Worn and unclean linens and furniture; Unhelpful front desk staff; Despite what their website advertises, they have a very rigid refund policy. We ended up changing hotels and would highly encourage others to find other places to stay. The "businessmen" hotels near the train station are immaculate and a good value.

This hotel is located in the front of the Kitakami Station. it is very convenient to access to Shinkan-sen. The room was clean but small, although it was acceptable. The price was cheap same as in the U.S. Free breakfast service as well as welcome drink (coffee) was available. Very nice service. The front staffs were very kind. Because this hotel has the coin laundry room (self laundry service), it would be good for family as well as the people who need long stay.

Chose to stay in Kitakami as a base to explore Hiraizumi and Hanamaki as the affordable hotels in those other cities are quite full during the date. From Kitakami, it is only 1 local train away to those cities. Arrived by highway bus on the west side of the station, have to use underpass in front of Met Hotel (not the one in front of the station/bus stop) to cross to the east side/shinkansen side of the station. From the east exit, it is only 1 minute walk to the left to reach the hotel. It is clean as could be expected as the usual standard for Toyoko Inn and now equipped with strong wifi at all rooms as well. The size for single room is adequate, equipped with double-bed size. My only complain is the pillow provided is Japanese style (small with beans/straws in one side), but other than that, the room is really great for the price. They provide curry rice in the lobby as free service in the evening and breakfast in the morning. There are several convenience stores behind the hotel, but many restaurants are located at the western part of the station. If you stay more than 1 night, you might want to participate in their eco plan program that give rate reduction for every consecutive second night without cleaning service (but they still provide clean towel every morning).

Hotel
My husband and I chose to stay in Kitakami for 2 nights over the busy Golden Week period and ended up at the Apa Hotel. It was my first time at an APA hotel and hopefully my last. The room was very expensive (30,000 yen/ night) given the state of the furnishings. To put it bluntly, the whole room felt incredibly unclean. The carpet was stained, the lampshade stained and despite it being a non-smoking room, there was a nasty nicotine aftertaste that had probably sunk into the wallpaper, carpets and drapes over years of previous use. The toilet had such bad water pressure you had to hold the flush lever for at least 10 seconds while you watched your business being slowly flushed. The toilet room itself was so small it was almost uncomfortable to close the door while using the facilities. The bathroom was a unit bathroom that felt like you were locked inside a space ship from the 1980s. The beds were advertised as being Sealy beds, and were probably good a decade ago. After years of use the 2 twin beds in our room both had distinct hollows shaped from hundreds of previous sleepers. I feel that the photos and information provided online grossly misrepresented the room we received. The wifi was ok and the TV and toiletries provided were standard. The only positive point was the staff. They were helpful and professional at all times. We did not complain at the time but after seeing what 30,000 a night can get you at the Westin Sendai (pure heaven) I feel very disappointed about the 60,000 we spent at the APA Hotel Kitakami Ekinishi.

If you want a quiet hotel with great service, this is your place. We added breakfast to our tab and on the first morning, I went down to find that as a vegan, there was almost nothing I could eat. Having had dinner the night before there, I asked if any of that food was available. They said no. They next morning, I went down again, prepared to have rice and some vegetables. Instead, they directed us to a table and asked us to wait. Several minutes later, they brought out fruit, steamed tofu, salad, and steamed vegetables. That is service! We were delighted and thanked them so much for their consideration and attention to our needs! The rooms are small, but clean and well-maintained and hats off to them for allowing you to decline housekeeping so that unnecessary resources are not used.

This ryokan outside of Kitakami and 9km from Geto Kogen ski area is comfortable and informal. While quite expensive, the food alone makes it worth the stay. There are 3 different insensitive for each gender and even private onsens. But the food is just amazing.
