The most expensive accommodation of our 11-day trip but I should say that it was money well-spent. When we arrived at Kiso Fukushima Station, we went to the information centre opposite the station to ask the staff there to help us inform the ryokan about our arrival. We waited about 15minutes at the centre for our shuttle bus to pick us up. The ride to the ryokan was scenic and relaxing. We stayed in the Japanese style room in the old building of the ryokan. A spacious and cosy room with clean private toilet and bathroom. Dining at the restaurant was a great experience. Our Japanese style dinner and breakfast were delicious. The beautifully presented food was served and introduced to us by the hospitable restaurant staff. However... there was too much food. We felt bad that we could not finish all the yummy food. Think it will be good if ryokan could reduce the portion of rice and noodles and let guests request for more if they need. The ryokan also organised free star-gazing session for its guests. A rare chance for us to look at the star-filled sky from the pitch dark summit and learn about the milky way, constellations... Our guide cum driver was very passionate about astronomy and he knew a lot about the stars... It will be perfect if he could communicate in English... What we like the most about this ryokan is the people... the reception lady, the star-gazing guide, the restaurant staff, the shuttle bus driver.... they were all very zealous staff. The ryokan owner was lucky to have staff like them.

It’s very popular with the local women! 6, The road itself is a famous place in the Kiso Valley. 7, The moonlight will show you around the Kiso Road at night.

The hosts could not have been more helpful, despite our inability to speak much Japanese. En-suite private onsen was great, and the rooms comfortable in traditional Japanese style. Meals were amazing- again traditional Japanese cuisine; many small delicious portions all served with a smile and an explanation of ‘ what it was and how to eat it’ in English. Truly excellent dinner and breakfast. Highly recommended, and straight across the road from the local train station ( but not noisy at all).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this Hotel. The room was clean and comfortable and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Dinner and breakfast were both traditional Japanese and the staff were helpful in explaining the menu for both meals. We tried everything and loved it all. We location is very quiet and just what we were looking for after the business of Tokyo. One thing to mention would be that our sat nav bought us to the correct place but we were confused as outside the name is Wald Hotel and it is only on entering the building that there is a sign saying "welcome to the Morino". Obviously a name change has occurred but when writing (Oct 2019) there was no outside signage. Just a heads up for anyone driving to the hotel. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

Surrounded by the nature of the Central Alps, you can enjoy a spectacular view through the four seasons. It is easy a little by car for 10 minutes by car from Kiso's main road, National Highway No. 19. There are quite a lot of people coming to see the stars, and we are also able to propose ways of enjoying various stars. We are also devoting much effort on meals, and dishes that incorporate a lot of Shinshu's ingredients are popular. Many drinks are also available, and you can enjoy many Shinshu wines. Besides, Kisoji beer, local sake, fruit juice and home roasted coffee are also popular. Please spend a wonderful time in the nature.
This quaint guest house on the the top of a hill, next to an abandoned ski-resort, is a gem in the Kiso area. It is at one with nature and completely non-imposing on the environment that it supports. At first glance it doesn't seem like much but Kato, the owner, chef and chief bottle washer goes out of his way to make his guests feel extra welcome. We were there in November so beginning of winter. Expect some snow on the mountains, a chill in the air and a cosy fire in the fireplace in the community dining room. They serve breakfast and dinner can be pre-ordered. The surrounding area is extremely picturesque and the nearby town of Narai-juku is a Japanese heritage site and worth a visit. This is Japan, so expect small rooms with small bathrooms. These were well appointed and perfect for a 3 star establishment. This is a nature hotel and it's perfect for nature lovers, astrologers, hikers and photographers! Well done Kato. Keep up the good work! P.S. If you're driving there, don't worry, you'll get there! It is literally at the end of the road...... :-)
