This onsen must have some great histories as it is big in a small city like Kikuchi. As with most Japanese establishments, it is clean and tidy even though you can see lack of regular maintenance in quite a few areas. The staff was friendly and helpful even though facilities were limited.

Kikuchi-shi is a kind of typical countryside city in Japan. Rather town. You can see rice field, sweet potato yard and ranch. Quiet circumstances and time is running slow. That reminds me my hometown in the forty years ago. Sasanoya is a traditional Onsen hotel in there. Hot Spring is very nice and hot water is always coming from the source. If you have a chance to stay there, I recommend Tatami room. Tatami room gives you more countryside sense and it is less and less in Japanese hotel. Food is not bad and price is reasonable. However, it is better for you not to have much expectation. It is just Japanese traditional Onsen hotel in countryside.

this is just an awful ryokan, dirty, threadbare carpets, old furniture stacked in corridors, cracks on the walls... seems like the owners gave up on the place about 30years ago. the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded only by cheap nasty red light district and dumpy houses... usually no matter how bad the ryokan is, the onsen might make up for any shortcomings... the outdoor onsen looked quite nice, unfortunately because 'kikuchi is famous for scorching water' the water was so hot i couldn't even use the onsen... this was the first time ever i haven't been able to walk in onsen water for fear of getting burnt... and it wasn't just me thinking this, i talked to two other japanese men who said the same... in summary, terrible place , avoid kikuchi and this ryokan hotel. better going to yufuin,
