While in the area for the motoGP races in Motegi, the closest we could get to the racetrack was the Oarai Park Hotel. This is a lovely hotel that has seen better days; nonetheless, the room was spotless, the service was excellent (including a front desk gentleman who had impeccable English), and our stay was lovely. Our third-floor ocean-view room was large, the beds were small, and the bathroom had all the essentials.

Kanpo no yado is a group of over fifty hotels in resort locations owned and operated by Japan Post. They are generally viewed as reasonably priced for their facilities and service. We stayed at this hotel located on the river mouth as our foorhold to explore Ooarai and Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture. We stayed in a two bed room with tatami flooring which is unique but perhaps more comfortable than sleeping on a tatami floor as in Japanese style hotels (ryokans). Ooarai is on the seaside, so we had a seafood course menu for dinner, which was quite good. It is not so voluminous so those with a healthy appetite should also ask for one or two side dishes that are offered at affordable prices. The public bath which is not a genuine onsen was clean and relaxing with a small outside (roten) bath. it wasn't crowded at all as this was a Sunday, but I believe it could be different on Fridays and Saturdays because I learned that the occupancy rate on that day was only one third. Amenities are not that many, for instance there were no sterilized combs in the room or public bath. Overall I thought perhaps the room rate was on the expensive side for their facilities. The staff were cheerful and well trained.

Service and staff at the hotel are really great. This hotel is about 25 minutes drive from Hitachi Seaside park. Our tatami room was clean, spacious and nice. View of ocean was great. The public bath is pretty small and simple. No sauna either. It was clean, but not very relaxing. The dinner and breakfast buffets were very good. The side room with the ocean room was better for sitting than the main room. 18:00 was a bit late to start dinner with the hungry kids. Pool was closed because it was December. Beach is rocky. All in all, good place for a stop-over.

A cheap accommodation in Oarai-machi. Regardless of bedding, please heal your daily fatigue with a comfortable sleep.
This is a traditional Japanese style inn in Oarai town. Dinner and breakfast which were included in the price were very delicious. Especially, we enjoyed "Ankou-nabe" anglerfish hot pod dinner which was famous local food during winter. Room and bathroom were clean, just OK.
