The stay was good and room nice and clean. One of the single bed's warm blanket did not work. It made a very cold night unpleasant. The parking was good and we could park with caravan still hooked. the short road from the tar road to the house it in bad condition and not well marked.

Situated in the tourist town of Gariepdam, 5 km from the Northern Cape border, you will find ABANCIDOU. Built in 1978 as the living quarters of the french engineers working on the dam, the building has been changed to room available for sleep overs on a long trip. In the effort to keep our prices as low as possible, for the traveler that does not want to spend his while budget on the first night at a 4 or 5 star hotel, our facilities are basic. While basic you can expect a clean room, clean fresh linen, guest amenities, a hot shower and of course the hospitality and friendliness that can only be offered by a family run establishment 3 km from the majestic Gariepdam, you can expect to hear all differenty types of wildlife, especially the fish eagles that roost less than 1 kilometer from out property Our belief and creed is that our home is your home.
We arrived at 11:30 for the check in which only takes place at 3:00 pm, even though no one in the hotel was empty because it was low season, the owner did not allow us to enter earlier. We waited in the parking lot and when it was an hour and a half to check in he canceled our reservation.

Gariep Dam SunRose Group AA Recommended accommodation is a self-catering or B&B guesthouse complex that is situated half-way between Johannesburg and Cape Town and is only 5 minutes from the N1 highway. It is an ideal pit-stop for the weary guest simply wanting to break their journey to have a single night sleepover or for the guest wanting to spend some extra days enjoying what the beautiful Gariep Dam village and surrounding area has to offer. Accommodation at a very reasonable price!! Please note that there is no direct view of the dam from any of our units. However, we are less than 5 minutes’ drive to the Gariep Dam wall. SunRose Group of Guesthouses is mostly acknowledged as one of the premier self-catering establishments in the area with some guests claiming it as one of the best value for money guesthouses at Gariep Dam. SunRose is divided into multiple separate independent fully equipped self-catering units.
As first-time clients, we and our friends had a very disappointing experience of the unit we booked for a one night stay-over in the Sunrose Group of Guesthouses. First of all, the photos on the web are definitely not a true reflection of what you get in real life: detached prefab houses in a bad condition, needing a serious upgrade and maintenance all over, especially taking into consideration that they advertise their accommodation as “AA recommended”. See a few photos attached as verification. Some of the problems we experienced were the two leather chairs on the stoep being so weathered that one cannot sit on these, and the upholstery and carpets inside also look weary and dusty. In the kitchen, the fridge compartment was so blocked with ice that we could hardly remove the two ice holders to get some ice, two legs of the table in the living area are broken and near collapsing, and there were not enough wine and water glasses for four people. The bathroom is in a shocking condition with mould spots on the ceiling, and the inside of the shower, specifically the corners and tiling, is in a shocking condition. The shower head is virtually completely blocked and the water therefore can only exit through two of the showerhead holes, which makes it quite challenging to catch a shower or wash your hair. Furthermore, once you turn on the hot water, the geyser makes a terrible noise, quite inconvenient when guests have to shower in the early morning, because you wake everyone around you. As mentioned, the houses need urgent maintenance, a deep clean and upgrade. One positive point is that the bedrooms are equipped with mobile aircon units. To summarise: From our first-hand experience, we will unfortunately never stay over here again and I also have no other option as to warn potential fist-time visitors against considering this accommodation.
