The best available hotels & places to stay near Derby

As one of England’s most haunted cities, Derby is awash with ghost-hunting opportunities. The city’s historic cathedral quarter serves as the gateway to the Peak District National Park, where rolling hills, babbling brooks, and traditional country pubs are reminiscent of a Romantic painting.

Everything was too much trouble - bridal party

Reviewed By LornaEames

As part of the bridal party, I stayed at The Farmhouse the night before my friends wedding. The rooms were lovely and perfect for what we needed. We had the bridal suite to get ready in and then a number of the other rooms. The wedding party then took the entire of the hotel up the following night. Upon check in the staff were unwelcoming and disorganised, resulting in the checking in experience being quite stressful. We asked if we could pre order breakfast to be brought to the room, as we we would be getting ready from early in the morning (breakfast was included in our room rate) but were told that the didn't do that and we'd have to come down. When we did come down to get breakfast there was only one other table eating- who were from our party - and so I do not understand why they could not accommodate this. We also asked if someone could follow us up with hot drinks as we had our hands full with breakfast plates, again we were told that they didn't do this and we'd need to make two trips. The bridal suite had been booked for the next night by someone outside of the wedding party. This was a shame but we understood we couldn't do anything about this. This meant that we would have to move into a second room half way through getting ready. We requested late checkout but were told 12 was the latest they could do - we left for the wedding at 1. At 12 we asked for the key to the new room but were told it wasn't yet ready. We started getting the bride into her dress. At 12.20 a lady arrived to tell us we needed to move rooms, I explained that we had tried but were now at the crucial getting ready moment and so would now have to wait. She returned 10 minutes later to rudely tell us again that we needed to move. We did then move into the other room. The staff did not offer to help which meant that we were carrying suitcases in our bridesmaid dresses. A really disappointing experience due to the staffs lack of flexibility and customer service. It is worth noting that we did eat an evening meal at the hotel which was very nice.

Visited on a 5 night holiday touring, and having read the previous reviews wasn't sure what to expect, but the staff couldnt do enough,I wanted a puffy pillow and some de-caff tea bags which were supplied immediatly, the hairdryer wasn't working, reception had a new one put in the room also the pillow was on the bed when I arrived back from the days outings. The room had a lovely comfortable bed, and all the usual amenities, bathroom was large, lovely towels and had an adjustable shower which is great for a short person! Have to admit the view wasnt the best but I do not go to a hotel to look out the window! The food was excellent and any special requests were supplied. The restaurant staff were very efficient and breakfast bar was topped up all the time. It was a very pleasant experience. Didn't have time to sample the swimming pool but it looked lovely.

Under-staffed, overpriced and Dreary

Reviewed By Voycey V

Breadshall Priory has massive potential to be a lovely hotel, and is set amongst the stunning Derbyshire countryside with its own magnificent grounds and golf courses. On arrival we did notice the grand entrance doors were grander than the tired looking reception behind them and when we arrived at our room we saw the same. The scruffy dark wood furniture, though clean, was in need of polishing. The décor was faded, though originally nicely appointed. The same could be said for the clean, but very dated bathroom. Like many hotels of this type, they try to make you feel to the manor born, but end up making you believe you are in the servants quarters. The car park was full of golfers cars in our zone, meaning we had to walk from another car park with our luggage and in our part of the hotel there was no lift. It was a quiet night to start with, but on our second morning we were awoken by the housekeeping staff doing maintenance in the corridor at 8 am. This hotel does have restaurant which is not open in the afternoon, meaning bar snacks in the leisure club would be lunch. Pizza and chips etc. But on Monday all that this big hotel could provide in terms of food was a cheese and ham toastie! Even golfers were going elsewhere. No staff apparently, which did not surprise us, it was bit of a ghost town all in all. At breakfast in many hotels of this size you are seated, then provided with coffee and toast. Not here. Find your own seat and serve yourself. Breakfast food was undeniably good. For the overall cost though I was disappointed and the bar staff hinted that eating out was the way forward of an evening. The restaurant looked even bleaker after sun down. We weren't asked at reception about our stay, just politely processed on our way. We'd booked it because it had a pool and a spa. This too was okay, but once again tired and dated and understaffed. I wanted to love it, but I didn't feel loved by it. English country hotels like this, well my experience here suggests they are an unwieldy thing of the past and a great advertisement for the joys of booking a modern and nicely appointed budget hotel, then spending the money on real fun instead. No big gripes, but I don't believe I'll ever go back.
