Beautiful hotel with 18 individually equipped and decorated rooms, a restaurant and a seminar room. It is located in the department of Drome on the countryside surrounded by fields and a park with swimming-pool and direct access to the Drome river which passes by next to the property. Free parking, no television, WIFI only in common areas (seminar room, restaurant, courtyard, breakfast room).
What a gem everything about our visit was 5 star from the minute we checked in to the minute we checked out. The building and the grounds were so beautiful and well maintained we even had cherries from the tree in the garden. Breakfast was very fresh and there was plenty of variety my partner managed to have some freshly made strawberry jam (shh). The rooms were basic but incredibly clean and comfortable with lovely white fluffy towels The hosts were very friendly and accommodating I would highly recommend L Auberge La plaine and if we ever return to that area of France in the future I will definatly stay here again

The location is a bit off the beaten track, therefore lets you enjoy a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. If you are open the owners try everything to make your stay special. Our two-floor room was spacious and wonderfully decorated. The old Maison is a gem in the region.

We spent two nights at the Clos de L'Ambre in June. It is quite hard to find, and a little tricky to park once found, but any doubts about the place, disappear once you meet the owner, Nathalie. Nathalie has an infectious charm that exudes not only from herself, but also from the rooms and garden that she has so cleverly designed and laid out, everything has her stamp on it. Her English is about as good as my French, so communication has to be worked on, but this seems to only add to the experience. She is knowledgeable on the whole Valley of the Drome area, and her advice most helpful. Breakfast is outside in a little courtyard, everthing fresh and local. The rooms are all different, but equally full of character. Also full of character are the well behaved cats (brought from Venice) and a shaggy Cocker Spaniel. If you are looking for luxury and air conditioning, then perhaps this is not the place for you. But if you want a real part of France, presented with genuine charm and affection, then this could be the real deal.

Stay away! Not recommended if you are anything different than a French couple that does not care about service. They only accept cash by the way. This was the second time we stayed at this hotel. The first one was in 2012, as a couple, for 3 nights, a few months after they had the hotel inaugurated. It was a good experience at the time and we did recommend the hotel to other people, reason for us going back in September 2016. Well, on the second occasion, things were very different. The place and service was far worse. This time we were staying as a family (couple plus a baby). We agreed to stay 7 nights at the most expensive room and pay in cash (only way to pay). The room was in good condition, however not noise proof and we had problems, as I will state below. On the 2nd day, we ran out of hand soap and toilet paper and weren’t replenished until we asked for it to be done. You cannot find the owners in the evening, so if you have an emergency, you’ll have to deal with it. We thought our room would be taken care of every day re these basic necessities, but we were wrong. On the 3rd day, we were late for breakfast and got told off, yes told off, for being late. We ignored it. On the 3rd night, arriving a little later than we expected (10-ish pm), we turned on the shower to bathe our baby, only to find out that there was no hot water, but warm water. In the evenings, as mentioned, you won’t find the owners to fix such thing, so we had to deal with it. We found out the next day that there was no hot water because they, in their own words “needed to save money where possible”. This B&B is the sort of lodging that prefers to save money in detriment of their guests comfort. So be prepared to pay a lot for no service. Breakfast time: 8:00 to 9:30. Food: the same every day, coffee/juice, bread, two cheeses and fruits. Not complaining, simply stating. On the 4th day, as we were leaving the hotel at around 10:15am and walked by the breakfast table (not expecting breakfast by the way) , we saw a note saying one of the owners had to leave to take care of other affairs and the breakfast was still at the table. We weren’t expecting breakfast to be there as we were informed breakfast was from 8:00 to 9:30. So we thought it was a good gesture from them and we decided not to leave the hotel without having it. It turned out it was completely the other way around. We got told off for having breakfast too late as this disrupted their lives. We then told them it was obvious that we were with a baby and on vacations! It doesn’t take much for anyone to understand this. Well it did. We had to hear from one of the owners: “I heard the baby crying at 7am and you could have come down to inform us if you would or would not have breakfast”. The reason was, in her own words: “because I have to calculate how much bread to buy in the morning.” Shocking, disrespectful and very impolite. And to finalize she said: “You should stay in a hotel”. Well, we followed her advice later that day, but prior to booking another hotel, we then communicated we did not want to have breakfast anymore. The owners were shocked! As crazy as all of this can be, this was also the day when we found out from the owners they had solar panels to heat the water and that the electricity (for water heating) was turned off so that they could “save money”…at the guests’ costs. On the same night we decided we had enough. We were not welcomed, uncomfortable, had too many problems and were paying a lot for a very poor service that wasn’t even being paid via credit card. Yes, they only accept CASH! We then booked a different hotel, 5 minutes away on the same night and had all our problems solved. On the 5th and final check out morning (we cut short our stay), as we were communicating we would like to check out and the reasons for leaving (no tp, no soap, no hot water, breakfast situation, poor service), we started being told off again! All was in French by the way, as we had fluent French speakers come pick us up every day. We were told off for leaving one bathroom light on for one afternoon (we did indeed forget it once only) and that they had to move one of their long time guests from the neighbouring room because we were too noisy. We had to be compared to these guests because apparently they stay every year for 30 days at the B&B, pay in cash and pay extra for some sort of extra meal. Does that matter? At the end, as my wife was putting her luggage together and taking them to the car, we had to hear (again!) one of the owners say “here in France we say ‘au revoir’ when we leave”. My wife was simply taking her stuff and our baby to the car and was coming back to get the rest of the luggage. Being accused of being impolite in such a way was appalling! Grumpy owners! This was the childish level that the situation had reached. We have never seen such thing in our life. Unfortunately we do not recommend this hotel for families, foreigners and for people that demand a minimum of courtesy and service, even if you speak fluent French or are French. There are a number of other options around and you can save yourself from stress.

L'arrivée à l'hôtel doit se faire à 15 heures et le départ à 10h 30. J'ai l'impression qu'on dérange. Le tarif est trop cher par rapport à la qualité. Les finitions sont assez moyennes. Les lits sont trop petits. Dans notre chambre la température des radiateurs n'est pas réglable et il y fait très chaud. Bref c'est pas terrible et c'est trop cher.
