The best available hotels & places to stay near Blue Mountains

September 28, 2022 Natalie Tallman

The Blue Mountains are named for the delicate azure haze that lingers along the region, which is actually a fine cloud of oil emitted by eucalyptus trees. The mystical mountains are a labyrinth of plateaus, gorges and gum trees. Check out the Katoomba Scenic Railway (the steepest railway in the world), the Jenolan Caves and the Giant Staircase nature walk.

Sky Motor Inn is a good option for drivers exploring Blue Mountains. It is located a short 3 min drive to Katoomba town and just outside the Great Western Highway. Check in was fast and staff gave a quick run down on the places of interests with helpful suggestions. Room is of decent space (we booked a Family Room for 5 which comes with one large bed, 3 single beds, a dining set and bathroom) and clean. Place is quiet despite it having high occupancy rate (judging by the number of parked cars).

Black Gold Motel

Nestled in the Seven Valleys, Black Gold was originally the old Wallerawang School, built in 1881. Through a series of imaginative transformations since 1995, Black Gold Motel & The Crib Room Restaurant was created – a clean, comfortable, unique, award-winning experience. Surrounded by world-class attractions such as the Glow Worm Tunnel, Zig Zag Railway, Capertee Valley, Jenolan Caves, Wolgan Valley. If you are into dirt bikes, off-road 4WD, bush walking, bird watching, fishing, or anything in the outdoors, you will be surrounded by endless opportunity. Trip Advisor awarded us the 2020 Travellers Choice “Best of the Best” award for service which placed us #5 in Australia & #11 in South Pacific. The walls of the Black Gold Motel carry echoes of the region’s mining history. The name ‘Black Gold’ is derived from the local coal mining industry. The coal was nicknamed ‘black gold’. The buildings of the Motel have fond memories for generations of locals who attended the school, and the boutique property stands as a proud icon of the town. In recognition of the property’s history, many rooms are named after school teachers & local mines to celebrate the rich industrial history of the area.

Well run hotel but full of tradies watching loud movies and smoking during the week

I was not so pleased with the Zig Zag this time. The next door room was playing movies until late into the night and I couldn't sleep. They also smoked outside my bathroom window and smoke came into my room before I had a chance to shut the bathroom window.

Amazing staff

Rooms were clean, modern and tidy. We arrived at 3.30pm, waited behind 5 people for the one staff member on the front desk to find out our room wasn't ready yet. Pretty disappointing considering 3pm is check in time. We were kindly offered two drink vouchers as compensation. Our room was made a available at 4pm. Pool was small and overcrowded. No pool towels were available when we arrived, however they were replenished later in the afternoon. Breakfast - usual fare , eggs cooked to order and barista made coffer were appreciated. Special mention to Harish - the restaurant manager who made an effort with every single guest. Consistently going above and beyond. Overall I was pleasantly surprised. Will return!

Very disappointing

Reviewed By Qualitytravel60

I was excited to returned to Lilianfels for a special birthday celebration last month as a guest, having worked there as a Chef in 1995. My disappointment began when I realised that there was no longer valet service and the front reception staff seemed totally disinterested. So we lugged our bags upstairs to our room which had been cleaned to an average standard and the carpet was quite worn in parts. The once vibrant Lillian's Restaurant is open for breakfast only these days and there was nothing exceptional about the food or the service. The beautiful lounge, once a social hub of activity for guests, is now cordoned off (please wait to be seated) and only available if you wish to have Hight tea. Overall, this once jewel of Katoomba has dropped it's standard significantly and is no longer even close to deserving it's 5 star rating. Shame to the current owners

Olde World Charm

A real nod to the character of the 1930s and 40s, dark and moody. We had a comfortable stay for two nights in a Queen room with a hot breakfast included. The room was cosy given that the original design and concept was kept true to the era but all the amenities were included. The bed was very comfortable and the linen crisp and clean. The bathroom was spacious. The hot breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Items were topped up by the staff when you requested. Hard to beat for $19 each. Check in experience was what I expected. Staff were pleasant and engaging and explained everything in detail. A venue true to it's rating. Would stay there again

Just that due to COVID-19 restrictions, there restaurant was closed for dinner and they don’t give all the toiletries. That’s why giving 4*. The Receptionist shared that they also like to go home and rest post 9:00 PM so no service. This didn’t matter to us as we were in the aura of staying in the hotel but yes, town was not good. Breakfast for next day was really a treat and service too was outstanding. For location wise, it’s very close to all lookouts. Like, just 2.00-2.50 kms. Approximately. Room was cozy and comfortable.
