HORRORS OF SOFITEL SIPOPO

Reviewed By RickyRoosterr

Am writing with a heavy heart of a young mother. A work plus family trip with our baby turned into a nightmare. Do not know where to start. This hotel needs to pull up its socks, only yada yada yada talk, all talk and no work. We gave in our laundry and the laundry woman was so spiteful for local people here, she forced herself in our room and tried to hold our baby multiple times, not a great idea, without our consent. The laundry comes back with a disgusting smell like of dead animals, like they have been dried with some dead rats or somethings. We handwashed everything after work n baby slept off in the bathing tub. The breakfast was what made us land on the hospital with the baby. Absolutely disgusted by the old, stinking, rotten, stale items in breakfast. Flies and roaches all over bakery items, flies all over fruits, expired yogurts. Dishes smelling same of dead rotten animals. There were some people there who looked regulars but after speaking to couple they said they had no choice. Dirty plates, that stink of rotten and stale meat, unhygienic food, staff that had skin allergies on hands and palms and still serving food was what landed me and my baby in hospital. Its more than 5 weeks but we haven't recovered from the infections and trauma. I had given a staff my bubbs milk bottle to get warm water but since I did not receive it after 20 minutes I went to the kitchen. Oh Horrors!! The Sofitel kitchen was a horror, it stank like a morgue, where dead meat has been stinking for decades. The staff were so disinterested in us right on the second day when we just used their restaurant but brought in all our food. It's so disgraceful that Sofitel Island hotel is such a dirty unhygienic place. I urge everyone here to do their blood work done after eating or drinking in this hotel. Zero standards of hygiene and I highly doubt they are compliant with any health and hygiene protocol. We wanted to see the General Manager but were told he is unavailable, the front desk lady was too rude and called herself the manager,Olanda. We had a failed trip with our baby and I landing up in the hospital and rude staff. Never ever ever going back to Sofitel again and shall make sure to tell our organisation about this to either cut the contract with them for depyta officers or officially raise a complain with Accor group. Mothers with babies and kids, and also people in general please be safe and keep getting your blood work done after you visit this horror of a hotel.

Good midrange hotel; only female guest; couldn't organize an airport pickup

Reviewed By ElizabethJK

I stayed here twice during my visit to Equatorial Guinea. The hotel is located in the new part of Malabo between the airport and the central city. If you want to see the tourist sights in central Malabo, you need transport to get there. I was in Rooms 102 and 228, which were identical, and the same as the room I had later when I stayed in the ibis in Bata. Each had a big bed, TV, a big desk with a chair, small sofa built into the wall, closet, in-room safe, fridge, AC and full-length mirror. The bathroom has a shower but no bath. The hair dryer was slow, so I used my own. I found the liquid soap dispensers at the sink and in the shower a bit fiddly at first. The Wi-Fi here is very bad indeed, so you need a lot of patience to do anything more complicated than sending or receiving text-only messages. The staff told me that Internet quality is a problem all over town. The restaurant was decent, but not outstanding. I ate outside, as there are plenty of tables and chairs outside, which seemed to be the preferred seating option for everyone else too. (There’s indoor seating if you want that instead.) But apply your bug repellant, as there are mosquitoes. Incidentally, I didn’t notice any other female guests staying at the hotel, so it seemed to be a business crowd rather than a tourist crowd – which is hardly surprising given the small number of tourists in Equatorial Guinea. Trying to organize an airport pickup was ridiculous and has resulted in my rating this hotel with three stars instead of four. I am a woman and was traveling by myself. The travel information issued by my country’s government warned about using random taxis, as there have been knifepoint robberies, particularly of women. So I thought it best to organize an airport transfer instead of finding a taxi at the airport. I had considerable back and forth with the hotel over this, in which they kept telling me to just get a taxi at the airport, even though I explained that I was a woman traveling by myself and didn’t wish to do so for security reasons. Finally they said the driver they usually use was on vacation. I ended up getting a ride with someone I met on the plane who was going in the direction of the hotel. But, really, I am flabbergasted that an ibis couldn’t have arranged an airport transfer, especially for a woman expressing security concerns. It wasn’t a hard thing to do – even if the usual driver wasn’t available – and there was no excuse for that shabby service.

Good place for travellers

Reviewed By madamjackie

This feels like a good place with services travellers want, although they are surprised if you’re a genuine tourist and not on business! Nice room if rather small and quite warm even with aircon. Small bathroom with minimal toiletries but has a hairdryer. Mineral water and safe, and TV with international channels. Very nice little cafe and good restaurant with an open kitchen so you can view your very good food being prepared. Shuttle to the airport. Overall pretty good.
