The best available Hostels hotel to stay near Vancouver Island

April 23, 2023 Kandra Bartel

Refer to Vancouver Island as Victoria Island and risk a chorus of eye-rolls from the otherwise-friendly locals. Yes, Victoria is the main city on the island, but there are many distinct flavors to its logging and fishing settlements. Food and wine enthusiasts flock to the Comox Valley farm region, while the more outdoorsy types get their fix along the remote, forested beaches of North Vancouver Island. Visit the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at Clayoquot Sound and you’ll return full of cocktail-party factoids.

Adequate for one person on tight budget

Reviewed By JennC1212

This is my first time staying in a hostel. I booked a single room with a double mattress. It is definitely a no thrills place but served it’s purpose to lay my head for the night before my flight. It is a bit noisy with the seagulls (close to harbour?? From the trash all over from the homeless?) but nothing my white noise machine didn’t drown out. It is around the corner from the Tim’s which was nice as I got supper and used reset room there. The parking is free on the street Sunday’s till Monday at 8 or 9 am so I didn’t have to pay 15 bucks for the fob. 100 dollar deposit (cash or card) is required on check in but returned. The front door is in constant lockdown so not sure about the other persons review about drug addicts coming and going as that isn’t correct. I felt safe being a single woman. It’s not in the best location for noise and homeless people but it is downtown ??‍♀️. 20 mins from airport.

No heat

Reviewed By 115fionay

I arrived about 10 pm and there was a sign saying to phone the night staff and there was no doorbell. My phone was dead and nothing nearby was open so I knocked for twenty minutes before someone came down to check me in. Arriving in the room, I felt a blast of cold air and saw that the heater was completely turned off and the window was open. Even after putting the heater as high as it would go and getting into bed with my winter coat on, I was still shaking with cold two hours later. The hallways were entirely unheated and the bathrooms had a tiny amount of heat with no thermostat to adjust it (meaning i could not have a shower that i was looking forward to and that is included in the rent). Amenities in the room that i remembered from previous stays were reduced (ie one towel instead of two). And the price had gone up, unlike every other hotel that are currently offering lower rates.

Comportement de la gérante inacceptable

Reviewed By Hoteiacceptable

North Coast Trail Backpacker's Hostel

Our hostel is in downtown Port Hardy just steps from the beach. We have wonderful ocean views, a great lounge room with table tennis, and shuffleboard. We have both dorm beds, private rooms and family rooms available. Our staff is friendly and knowledgeable whether it is where to eat, which trail to hike or where the local eagles nest is we are happy to help.

Friendly welcome went above and beyond for their sick guest!

I would highly recommend this hostel. I stayed for one night in 2015 and it's bad manners I'm only getting round to writing this now! Anne and Rob have been doing this for years and they seem to be one of the most popular stops for pre- and post- ferry travelers. I came in on the ferry late at night with a stinking cold, sneezing and shivering. I had booked a bed in a 6 bed dorm but Anne bumped me into a private at no cost (I think partly worried about me infecting all her guests - which I heartily appreciate!). She also opened up their attached cafe (which was locked up for the evening) to find me some camomile tea. She was extremely solicitous and kind, very worried about me. Traveling solo as I was, it meant a lot, and a night in a cosy, clean bed made a lot of difference! Thank you so much for your kindness - never forgotten!

Incredible hostel, perfectly located.

My wife and I booked for Labour Day weekend and this was the cheapest place around, so honestly we weren't expecting much. We left feeling like we got way more than we paid for. We ended up staying two individual nights, the first in the male-dorm-turned-private-room and the second in a private "family" room. Both rooms were large, clean and nicely decorated in rustic chic style, and the bathrooms were kept impeccably clean for our entire stay despite the facility being fully booked. Maybe we just had good neighbors, but everyone was quiet after 11 and we slept well without hearing our neighbors. We loved the historic downtown building, massive common area upstairs (the "ballroom"), and the well-stocked and clean kitchen. Check-in and check-out were super easy, with key codes provided ahead of both stays. COVID precautions were clearly posted throughout the property and handwashing tips over the bathroom sinks, making us feel safe staying during the pandemic. Everyone we met was wearing masks in areas where they'd come in contact with others. I wouldn't hesitate to book again -- this hostel is a gem.

Value Lodge Motel

Value Lodge Motel is under new management since December of 2009. We renovated all the rooms with new Sealy mattresses and furniture. We also have fully equipped kitchenettes for convenience.

I suggest going somewhere else.

If I was the owner of this place I would change the name from Value Lodge to Value Dumpster. The only good thing here was the nice tv and satellite package. Now, if you can hear the tv over the incredible noise of the permanent upstairs tenants, cars and local crazies that frequent the place at all hours of the night then you got yourself a great room!
