I went on carnaval vacations to Montevideo. I first have reserved in other hostel that didn´t resepect our reservation. I fortunatly find Posada del Gaucho to stay. It was a really good experience. The place is in optimal location. Instalations are almost new. I suggest 100%.

I was passing through Uruguay on my way to Brazil, and stumbled across this hidden gem. Being a English speaker with very little Spanish knowledge , it was refreshing in Montevideo to have some of the staff who could speak English. The only precaution is this hostel is quite 4:20 friendly. They staff smoke marijuana frequently as it is fully legal in Uruguay. So I do advise if you have issues with weed , perhaps don’t stay here, although there is no pressure to smoke. I met tonnes of great people , they have family style vibes and there’s smart tv with Netflix, where I couldn’t watch some American shows. The staff also mingle quite frequently with the travelers, there’s music and there’s always someone cooking. The location is farther from downtown but is right by the beach and has all the basic necessities . If you stay here Vinny and Lee were the stronger English speakers and were greatness people, however all of the staff were amazing!

Great position, very clean and our room was spacious with a good bathroom. The staff were very helpful and you can hire bikes. However we found it a bit lacking in character. Normally with hostels there are lots chances to chat to other travellers but that just didn't happen. There isn't a shared kitchen (though you can bring in ready prepared food) and maybe that's why. We just didn't feel that it merited the great reviews others had given it but we may have just been unlucky

El Viajero Downtown Hostel & Suites is conveniently located in the heart of Montevideo: two blocks away from our most important Avenue 18 de Julio and only 10 minutes away from Montetvideo's main attractions. Near the nicest squares of our city (Plaza Cagancha, Plaza del Entrevero, Plaza Independencia and Plaza Matriz), 10 minutes walk away from the beach. Established in an ex hotel in a typical colonial style house of the XIX century, El Viajero Downtown Hostel & Suites has 12 private rooms with bathroom en-suite, offering you all the comfort of a hotel with the fun and relaxing atmosphere of a hostel. Well-equipped spacious kitchen, BBQ, colonial patio with a garden outside, movie area and a bar open 24/7.
This hostel is really cool. You are in the center of Montevideo from where you can reach everything by walking. The whole hostel is so amazing, the photos depict that atmosphere so wonderfully. The breakfast is tasty, in the evening you can use the kitchen to cook your dinner. We had a room with a french bed and a bathroom included, nevertheless you can also book a bed in a dorm. Our room was nice and clean, good to stay for several days. The best to note is the nice staff. All people working there are absolutely nice, friendly, and helpful. Everything we asked for was directly solved, for example we asked for some tours to Colonia del Sacramento or Punta del Este and they organized it quickly. Especially worth mentioning: On Sunday there is a nice event some blocks away where a group of people is practicing playing drums for Carnival. The staff offered us to join them to go to this amazing experience. So do not forget to ask, if you are interested, as this is something not touristic to take part.

Che Lagarto Hostel Montevideo is the perfect place to enjoy the unique city : beach, historic patrimony, culture and the typic "rambla". Find here comfort, warmth and perfect atmosphere to make new friends from everywhere with a lot of "buena onda"!!
There's just not much to say about the place itself other than that it was overall clean & tidy especially the dining area (with also a "nice plus" of a flat screen TV) adjacent to the lobby and that the basic breakfast was a "fairly filling" one. So yes, what I liked most about this place is really its "convenient location": at a fairly close proximity is Tres Cruces (just a 10-to-15 minute walk with a left turn after coming out followed by another left after about 4 blocks where it leads straight to that building at the end) which is a "fairly spread-out" shopping mall on the second floor (with also a big food court for "all varieties" of food) and which is a big bus terminal on the first floor (with a number of bus lines to & from several out-of-town destinations and from which I took both my day-trip bus to Colonia & the 'EGA' bus to Porto Alegre to continue on my journey); and as for some other conveniences, there's a main street Avenida 18 de Julio just a block to the south of this place (a right turn after coming out then just to the left for a few-minute walk after crossing the street) where there are a currency exchange place (just like on the left-side corner once getting on that avenue), a supermarket (across the avenue then to the right for about a 5-minute walk) & actually also this "market street" called Dr. Tristan Narvaja which is just an "all miscellaneous" market with everything from raw food & cooked food to clothing & souvenirs but which is probably only on weekends (a further 5-minute walk along the avenue from the supermarket as just mentioned so about a total of 10 minutes from this place); and there's a bus stop right outside from which there are a number of buses heading to Plaza Independencia (just about a 10-minute ride heading west where you can spend a day or two around the Plaza itself & in its vicinity which is kind of a "sprawling area" of the old city Ciudad Vieja).

It is a beautiful hostel newly opened in November 2017. It is convenient for sightseeing in Montevideo.
Karin provided us with a lot of information about the city and made us feel at home. The best way to explore this city is by bike and this hostel has really nice bikes to rent (for a cheap price). I’d recommend this hostel if you’d like to have a good night rest and meet different people from all over the world! Also, if you like to cook: their kitchen is amazing!

Ok hostel in a lovely old building with very friendly and helpful staff. It's located in an old sector of the city that is part run-down with a fair few homeless people, part cool and under renovation. My room was spacious but did not have a window so was warm even with a fan.

This was the worst hostel I staying South America. Beware anyone reading this: they will rip you off! They overcharged us and wouldn’t change it. I didn’t expect a hostel to rip us off. They charged our credit card in USD instead of pesos A higher conversion rate which basically means they ripped us off. There were other problems in addition to this if you’re not convinced that this hostel is terrible. Cons: 1. We didn’t even actually stay at the hostel. We stayed in a house down the street. 2. During our 6 day stay, we didn’t see one person cleaning. The bathroom is dirty and the kitchen stinks. 3. People live there and have taken over common areas and all the bottom bunks. 4. The staff doesn’t know anything about the city. 5. We over paid for laundry service to wash and dry our clothes and my clothes were still wet. They charged us $7US to wash and dry one load after quoting a different price to us. 6. The air condition in our room was broken. So we had the keep the windows open and hear the loud street below us. Because of this, we got a lot of mosquitos. I would not recommend anyone stay here. It was the worst hostel. They are scammers. These good reviews must also be a scam because it was that bad.

Our aim is to make your stay at the Hostel another great experience in your trip, with an emphasis on cultural interchange and offering you a wide range of activities inside and outside the Hostel, such as traditional “asados” (barbecues), pool tournaments, city tours, trips to the interior of the country and many other outdoor activities.
I have only been one night there, but it was a good experience. The staff is really helpful and the hostel is well located, only 10 minutes from the old city, laundries and restaurants at walking distance. There is a pool table as well

We are situated in a beautiful old colonial house near Park Rodo. The hostel has a large indoor communal area and a courtyard with a barbaque area, where guests can relax and socialise over an 'Asado' night. All rooms have A/C and WiFi access. The hostel provides free breakfast and free linen. There are 4 bathrooms, 2 which are ensuite. The hostel is within walking distance to the beach and the park (5 minutes), supermarket (5 minutes), bus terminal (20minutes), city center (20minutes) and round the corner from many popular bars and clubs.
We stayed for two nights over the weekend. At night it was very loud due to the bathroom in the next room and loud guests. Good for cheap stay near pubs and clubs, bad if you want a quiet night. The stuff is friendly, overall clean.
